| Assalaamu alaikum, Alhamdulillah, I am officially a doctor!! So…. who is brave enough to volunteer for a checkup? :) Nah, not that kind of doctor (my mom won’t even trust me with a thermometer!). Today I submitted my dissertation and completed all the requirements for a Ph.D. in civil engineering. I have developed computational models for intelligent systems that involved lots of mathematics and computers. And I was solely responsible for depleting the forests with a book and several article publications, and reams and reams of printed and copied material! Alhamdulillah, it is finally over after years of toil. It wasn’t easy, and the last 3 or so years I have questioned myself, “what the heck am I doing?” May Allah swt reward me for any good that came out of it and forgive me for any bad. And may He make my work and knowledge of benefit to the Ummah and humanity in general. Ameen. This is a turning point in my life after spending all my life in school. I still haven’t secured a job yet. This crazy materialistic world doesn’t seem to like someone like me :( But alhamdulillah, everything has worked perfectly for me, and inshallah things would work out in the future as well, with the help of everyone’s prayers. So, I have a request of my brothers and sisters. Please make dua for me that I find a means of rizq and livelihood soon, and that whatever happens, let it be for the best in this world and the next. Would you please, pleeeeze…. :) Allright, I am out. Wasalaam, Daktar Asim :) P.S. just having some fun, I like plain Asim, daktars scare me! :) |

| A huge round of Congrats is in order! I remember the feeling: walking over to the Graduate School offices, officially handing it in, watching as they did the stupid stuff like check margins, etc., getting the all clear, and walking out of the building wondering, what on earth am I going to do with my time now? | [slm] congratulation!! subhanallah, I wonder what that feeling is like, to be completely free of what you've been doing almost all of your life, to have finished school (for civil engineering that is, for we'll be students the rest of our lives), all the writing, books, articles, handing in that final paper...aaah, yes I would be able to fly again :) ok, I'm not there yet, but it feels so close! insha'allah you'll make use of this Ph.D. for the Ummah and find a job! :) |

| Assalaamu alaikum, Thanks for the congratulations and duas :) It sure is a funny feeling being done with something that has been a major part of my life. Yesterday and most of today I just took the day off (that means no internet also :)), walked around campus, visited different buildings, reflected on the past. Dawn, yep, I had that same feeling and experience. Yesterday was really cold (single digit wind chills; that is less than -13 Celsius for you brits). I walked over to the graduate school builing, waited for about 10 minutes for the person to show up, then he did the usual flip through the dissertation checking the format, etc. Ten minutes later I was done. Suddenly my sorroundings changed. It is just amazing how everything feels and looks different when a major load is taken off one's mind. Even though it was blustery, it looked and felt great. I even discovered a new exit from the building as I wandered in the bulding trying to find the stairs as the elevators were not working! (the graduate school offices are in a really old building with interesting nooks and crannies) Alhamdulillah. Woah, se7en, great advertisement for my website! I just checked my site log, and there are like 15 hits! I hardly get 2 or 3 a day. Alhamdulillah, the last couple of months I have been able to do more Islamic reading, been able to attend mosque more frequently (yeah threatening someone works somewhat :)), am attending a tajweed class, and also sat through a Arabic grammar class. But I do need to find a job too. Inshallah soon. Allright, thanks again :) Wasalaam. |
