Wohoooooooooooooo.

Couple of questions

1. Who's your favorite player who is playing this year?

2. What's your favorite team?

3. Who do you think is going to win the cup?

4. Are you a football  (soccer) hooligan?

I'll answer after everyone has answered insha Allah.

well i have always enjoyed watching Brazil, playing their beautiful game.  I used to enjoy watching the Germans also, and underdogs were always interesting.

Every year I think the Brazilians are going to win, you gotta love the way Bebito, Romario, and Ronaldo play.

Anyone know any of the chants used in the games by the fans?  I suppose the Europeans know them well. ;)

LOL I had a feeling this topic was about to pop up sooner or later! ;D

Personally World Cup hype has already hit home....I've been spending more time on World Cup Football Forums lately than Jannah.org :)  I look forward to the World Cup more than any other sporting event! Its just sooooo exciting that I can already feel the adrenaline pumping!
1. Who's your favorite player who is playing this year?
Its hard to pinpoint any one particular player but the ones I can't wait to watch are Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Figo and of course Bekham and Owen ;) Oh, and Roberto Carlos' free kicks! Delight to watch.
2. What's your favorite team?
I have always supported Brazil. My brother got me into them. The Brazil team of '82 was what made me fall in love with the Brazilians forever. I was too young then but after watching the games and players (Zico, Socrates, Falcao, Eder) yrs later it was obvious this was the best and most romantic football ever played. This is one love affair I just cannot get out of ;)

I hope England do well.
3. Who do you think is going to win the cup?
My money is on Argentina, France or Italy. However predictions are a lot more complex than just selecting the best team or whos in form. If one studies all the world cups(I'm one sad git that has), a lot depends on the draw. We'll discuss that later :)
4. Are you a football  (soccer) hooligan?
I'm a fanatic, but that doesn't make me a hooligan ;D

Bhaloo,
The actual songs each nations fans chant are pretty boring. What is cool though, is chanting their country's name in their *accents*, for example, the Italians go "ITALIA! ITALIA!" or the Brazilians "BRASIL!.....BRASIL!" or even the Germans, "DEUTSCHLAND! DEUTSCHLAND!". You gotta hear it to know what I mean :)
you gotta love the way Bebito
That would be Bebeto...ha ha only one letter but los brasileros might get upset!  and bebito means little baby in spanish  ;)

Being from Venezuela every Cup we always root for Brasil, and always the jerseys sell out in the stores, people paint their faces, gather in homes...the streets are deserted whenever they play.  I remember I was there in 94 and when they won it was total chaos, mayhem on the streets (in a good way I mean: cars honking, flags everywhere, party on every corne, etc).

We're still mad about France winning last time, and there was a crisis because they barely made it to the cup this year, so let's see if they can take it for the 5th time.

Also, have you noticed the pattern in cups, where whatever continent is hosting the cup, a team from that continent wins?  Does that mean an Asian team will win for the first time?

4.
Yes in more ways than one.

Haha sis eleanor, nice song there but we'll see how ma boy Zeedan flys the ball past your goalie  8) insha Allah.

Bhaloo, World Cup 98 wasn't as good as 94, but I'm hoping insha Allah this year that it rocks. I think Ronaldo is no longer playing for Brazil, as his knees are all busted. That's what i was told.

I can hardly wait - i'm really looking forward to the tournament this year. Last time i routed for Holland, and was desperately disappointed when they went out to Brazil as the Dutch were by far and away the best team in 1998.

Subhanallah! Did you see Bergkamp's goal against Argentina? Insha'allah i will never forget that day! WOOOHOOOOO! (Click here)Its such a shame that he's hung up his 'international boots' but us gooners get to see his silky skills week in and week out at Highbury so khair.

This time i'm supporting France to go all the way. I think they've got the best midfield pairing in the world in Vieira and Petit, and up front... they've got Thierry Henry with Zinedine Zidane sitting behind him... do i need to say any more? The two are on fire! Add to that Barthez, Trezeguet, Wilthord, Anelka.... raaa boy!

I used to like England but would you support a team whose squad included Emile Heskey? forget it!

Alot of teams have players that are brilliant like Figo, but a one-man team won't get anywhere in ths competition.

Bhaloo you enjoy watching the Germans? And underdogs???? hehe.

phew, cool, alhamdulillah, u guys discuss footy as well ;D. i was waiting to bring this up closer to june. i get excited months before the tournament kicks off. i was planning to catch a couple of games in japan or korea but lookin at the ticket prices, i think ill pass and wait for the next one, if im alive by then:)

cool eleanor, keano is one of the best players in the world, haha but the irish lads aint gonna win it yeah?! and me fav club team is Manchester United. ive been following em since i was wee small, almost religiously back then, and less now alhamdulillah. as for countries i support argentina and ironically england too at the same time. argentina cos i fell in love with the sublime touches of a man called maradona in the 86 world cup(82 was a disappointment, 90 was worse) and ingerland cos im most familiar with the english game.

as for players i dont have a fav player, there are soooo many brilliant ones, i cd go on and on lol.

id say argentina will win it after watchin the argentina-brazil qualifier. it was one of the most complete performances by any team in every dept that ive seen and the brazilians had no answer. its unfortunate the dutch didnt qualify, im not a fan of theirs but sure would like to watch van the man nistelrooy bangin in the goals. had a good football discussion with my buddy who was in spore for 3 days 2 weeks ago and he pointed out to me that italy will win it cos they got abt the best defence and they're potent upfront too. so he is convinced they'll do it. ill agree with explorer that it will be either argentina or italy or france(how can one not be mesmerised by the grace of zidane).

alright then lets carry on this thru the tournament, haha :)

and kashif, the gooners aint gonna make it this yr :P

I would have supported the Taliban, but FIFA wouldnt allow them to take thier tanks onto the pitch so they didnt enter.

Anyway i'm supporting Nigeria, they are beautfully powerful players, rather then use skill, they use brute force and strengh, in USA in 94, they were awesome, they pulverised the others!!!

Also i wanna see the little korens and japs do well, as this is THEIR territory, their climate, and they have a huge advantage with the temratures being so high!!

I'm hopin gthis will be a good tornament dominated by the smaller teams.

Least I say the better ;D

Al Basha - Don't worry, Ronaldo will almost certainlly be there. Brazil manager Scolari(whos a twat!) has said he's first choice even if injured. A fully fit and in-form Ronaldo is better than any other striker around. He just needs to break away from this injury jinx. The problem is with Romario whom Scolari does not favour or get on with. If some how he gets chosen its only because of public and media pressure which is massively in favour of Romario.

Salam alaykum,

Mmmm Explorer you forgot Cerezo and Junior on the wing, sometimes i still have dreams of the long shot of Eder and nightmares of Paolo Rossi. mm the good ol'days, Brasil was not playing futeboll, those guys were dancing a mix of Tango and Flamenco on the grass at other times it was just like a Bocelli(con te partiro), well now Nike's ($$$) have kick in and that something special, a je ne sais quoi is going away. But i'm sure we are going for a surprise, for they have always bounced back, they have the know-how, and the pool of players is just incredible, plus they were lucky at the draw. Having said that, Argentina, France ( Ah la France, mais elle va faire des degats !!!)  and England will be the top 3 that's a given, followed by Italia and (Cameron,SeneGhal, Nigeria) (hey got to support the home boys). But the bets are really open with the underdog, i mean the level of foot has gone up everywhere, it's not like before one could say that you had a couple of sure teams, today things have changed a lot. One could pick any continent today and see some class ball around, from the technical part to the finishing touches.

Are you a hooligans:
wow that make me smile, Football is an art in itself, only the low drunk can be hooligans and we know where they are from, others admire and let the game captive them for the 90 mn.

Ahmer:) Desert Champ wow that make me smile big time, we'll see how they fare.

Most probably Romario will be part of the squad for he still keep on scoring despite what Scolari think's of him. And Ronaldo might not be ready, remember the guy has been out of the field for so long.

Cerezo was an excellent midfielder but I carry a chip on my shoulder aganist him after that costly back pass which put Rossi on for goal. That game, probably the greatest in world cup history, will remain etched in our minds for eternity. And for Brazilian fans allover, continue to be known as the 'Tragedy of Sarria'. Look at us, 20yrs on and we're still romanticising about their style of football.

Did you know that Eder is Roberto Carlos' mentor? His free kicks and long range efforts in '82 were breathtaking, especially that scorcher that rattled the crossbar against Argentina. No surprise that Roberto Carlos is following his footsteps with similar and yet more daring displays. Dead ball? He'll bury it!

Eder, Socrates, Zico, Falcao and Junior

What can you say? ;-)

I remember when I was at school once and we picked names of players we wanted to be and I chose:

"Eder - The Great Bender"

Of course I choose the name because he could bend the ball with the outside of his foot. Needless to say there was another interpretation unbeknownst to me which caused great hilarity amongst my fellow pupils!!

They really should have won the World Cup that year.

Sven is an Englishman ? Uh...ok. What the heck have I been missing ?

Personally, I dislike English footie cos they lack style and class.  I mean if you have two games on TV at the same time, the Serie A and the EPL, its evident that the English brand of football aint nuthin but kick, everyone run after ball, kick, ooppsss missed by a whole yard, kick..where the blinkin ell is everybody, kick..oh ferget it ? I hafta agree with Sis Ellie, the Irish play better footie than the English *ducks*

Fave player ?

You want me to choose ONE man from a whole legion of handso..errr *cough cough* talented continent that is Europe ? Thats asking the impossible ! Not to mention those brave African men  :D

Fave team ?

I have been rooting for the Germans (West Germany back then) since 1970. But now...well, they are too busy making cars and money to improve on football. So I always root for the underdogs.  But I still secretly hope an African country would win.  Cameroon was such a disappointment in 1998.

Who will win ?

The marketing people who think of every single thing to sell.  I mean if they can sell toilet rolls with players' faces for a 300% profit they would.  PS Anyone going to Korea and Japan please get me the Italian Jersey  :D

Soccer hooliganism ?

*swings her baton* Emmm......me is a sweet demure subservient and soft typical Asian girl.  Me would never hooliganise anyone  ;)

PPS If a push comes to a shove and a pistol is held at my head...I confess.  If I hafta support an English group its LIVERPOOOOLLLLLLLLL

YOU'LL NEVER WALK ALOOONNEEEEEE

The Gunners are the best team in the League and insha'Allah this year they'll go ahead and do the double. I think Alec Ferguson's decision to not retire this year was when he realised early on in the season that Arsenal were going to take more honours then Man Utd, and of course, he wants to end his career in style doesn't he?

Mind you, the injury to Robert Pires is a big setback for us, he is one of the most exciting players we've had for a while now, masha'Allah.

Unfortunately I always get Arsenal pipping Liverpool by 1 pt.

Arsenal's run in is easier bearing in mind Liverpool and Man Utd still have to concentrate on the biggest prize of all, the Champions League.

Shame about Pires, big loss to all football fans. I was tipping him to be the surprise player in the World cup.
