Simple life vs. Economic strength

I saw the budding of the discussion on living a simple life (below lower-income tax bracket) versus strengthening ummah through robust economy.

So herein lies the dilemma.  On one hand, the wheels are already set in motion, robust economy (not greed) is necessary for the growth of civilization.

On the other hand, the line between that which is sufficient and that which is excessive is very thin, and one can easily cross it.

Way back when, hundreds of years ago, that is the time period Muslims love to quote as the "Golden Age of Islam," traders carried with them the da'wa of Islam to nations and lands they do business with.  How can this be possible now if the ummah economy is weak?

Any thoughts?
