| Humdardi ------------ On the bough of a tree was seated A nightingale that was saddened Saying that- Over me the nght is past And in pecking day is lost! Towards their nest How will they (birds) reach When the shadow of dark Has fastened its glitch When heard this yell and wail Of the nigthingale Said the glowworm In a voice so calm With my heart and soul To you I am of avail So what if I am An insect so little? The night is dark Why worry then? All through your route I will enlighten! A torch has Allah given me A radiant lamp has HE made me Noble are those ones indeed Whom others find while in need! ;-) - Allama Iqbal [translated by JAIHOON ] 'I think' Iqbal has himself translated this from a poet called 'Copper'. probably this was originally written in some western language. *This was posted in the earlier board once in request to translate the original urdu poem. |

But then the flow is becoz I translated from Urdu... and Urdu is URDU after all ;) Not that western poems don't have flow or good theme, but when compared to eastern poems, especially mystical poems, there is BIG difference. Western culture has produced intellectual thinktanks including in litrature but personalities like Rumi and Iqbal are found only in the eastern soil. Dante's Divine Comedy, highly acclaimed for its mystical theme, is itself inspired, and lifted to some extend, from eastern philosophies and beliefs, including the Miraj of Holy Prophet [saw] - says a christian father of Spain in his reasearch work. But these differnces of E and W are almost no more, especially after the coming of WWW :P Hamdardi.. is i think 'friendship' ... did i go too far in explaination ::) :-* :-/ |

| [slm], Hamdardi means 'sympathy' or empathy. Hamdard is the adjective and could be a friend. This is one of the poems I learnt as a child while I read Kuliyat-e-Eqbal. Another one I love is "Lab pe aati hai dua ban ke tamanna meri'. Unfortunately I had to transfer to an english medium school after grade 5th and I completely lost touch with Urdu. A very very rough translation of Lab pe aati hai is as follows (Jaihoon could do a better job inshaAllah, but I am posting anyways). ======= My wish comes out on my lips as a prayer O Lord, let my life be like a lamp Let the darkness in this world disappear and by my shining let every place be lit up Let me be the cause of beauty to my country Just as a flower is the beauty of the Gardens My life be like a moth, O God and I love the light of knowledge My job be to protect the poor To love the lamentable, the weak O God, save me from evil and let me tread on the path that is right Somebody do a better translation please.
