sheeeesh! i don't understand why is this such a big deal?? i vote FOR keeping the edit feature.   :P the current format of the board does not change the time of the post on the header when you modify the post, like it used to on the old board.  so the only way to know if a post was modified is by the edit feature. and i don't think i need to explain why it's important to know when a post is modified!  do i?? wassalamu alaikum :)

Cara i think its something to do with the editing feature. Apparently, if you edit your own post, it will leave a message at the bottom saying "post last edited" yip yap blah blah, and i dont think Barr likes it, neither do i!! I say vote it off, than have a  []

[slm] Well sometimes when many of us are in a rush (not everyone has too much free time, eleanor:)) during the mayhem we don't always remember some points that we had initially thought off. So after the typing blitz, we quickly view our masterpiece :) and boom, those points suddenly bounce back! Hence the need to edit - to go back and add those points to the post, which is eventually for everyones benefit anyway. [wlm] That's true... If you don't want it to say "Last Edited" just click on preview when you're done writing your post and keep doing it until it's perfect... that's what people should do as a default anyway... so you don't have to keep going back and "modifying" your post!!!

[/quote] It's alright ukhti. Thanks for pointing out. Jazakillah :) As I understand it, the term "godfather" as used by the genuine mafia, indicates the supreme authority of the group. This does not attribute anything divine to the person. I asked an ustaz abt it and he said that it's usage is not haram as it does not indicate something to have an association with Allah as in other words/ phrases like Moon God, Goddess, Gods, Mother of God etc . The English word for "god" does not have the same weightage and essence in meaning as the arabic word "Allah", and hence, it would be haram, if the word is literally translated to Arabic and used. Evenso, it'll be impossible to translate it to such as Allah is a word on its own, with no plurality and gender. Nevertheless, he did say that that it's best that we do not use it as I have done. I'm sorry if anyone took offense in it. Afwan. And may Allah forgive me for being reckless and less than cautious. If anyone else have asked anyone knowledgable, please do share, inshaALlah :) So...InshaALlah, I'll edit it...again! (yes, yes... laugh all you want you Pro-editers!:P :)) However, just a side point, I find another concept that is very interesting in Christianity about the word godmother/ godfather. The word itself, though it does not indicate divinity to the person, indicates the responsibility given to a person to protect and take care of a child's belief in divinity ie. Christianity - to ensure it's growth and protect the belief in the child. A sister of mine, who converted from Christianity told me that her aunty, who was her godmother was the one who was badly affected by her conversion to Islam as she felt very responsible. This is especially so as her mom has passed away, so it seems that the accountability for the state of her "deen" is heavier on her aunt's shoulder. I thought that is a good approach.. in terms of a more communal effort to ensure that the child grows within the spirituality/religion. Hmmm, but I'm not sure how effective it is in the current modern world. Is such concept still practised fully? Allahua'alm :-) P.S. Asim, I did think of using "Den Mother", but I wouldn't wanna run into Mother Mods' Black Book  ;D .. hmm... but, Kathy seems to grow all fine with her membership! :):):) P.P. S >>> Aabidah, errm.. [/quote] Being a former Catholic- yes they still do assign "god" parents to the new born baby. Yet like Easter, Christmas, etc.. the religious aspect has fallen to the way side. ::) My 'god'mother- never once addressed my reversion. :-/ [quote]P.S. [slm] It could be probably but this board doesn't work like the old one.. so even if the timestamp is modified it doesn't turn new and doesn't pop up to the top so it's not worth all the programming effort i think

The edit feature is not there to take part in a most beautiful graphic design award... it has a function, ie to tell us if the post has been changed or not. Just wanna add my two cents worth (plus inflation rate) to this whole issue.  I think Sis Barr started the campaign out of a genuine concern and that concern is legitimate whether we understand it or not simply because she is concerned abt it. We all empathise even if we cannot sympathise. However, a point to note.  Like Ellie said, why do we want the line off ? Best bet is because we are conscious of the fact that we make mistakes all the time.  But then again, since when are we perfect ? Why do we need to present ourselves as perfect ? What is wrong with showing people we are normal, for making mistakes is being normal. The Persians are famous for making carpets.  There is a story I read when I was reading a book on carpet making by Persians.  No matter how skillful they are, they always make a mistake deliberately altho it may not be visible to the eye.  This is because they say only Allah is the perfect Creator and not them, humans. Change is good but we have to examine the reason for the change.  If the line should be taken off because it impairs the discussion or because it cause grievous results to posters then by all means take it off.  If the line serves to remind us to Istighfar because we made mistakes unintentionally, then keep it on. as salaamu alaykum, br siddiqui, you can still go back and edit your posts.. it's just that on the bottom of your edited post you won't see that little thingie that says "this post was edited by such and such person on such and such date" some people (ahem) are a little sheepish about how many times they go back and edit their posts, and don't want everyone to know about it.. wasalaamu alaykum :-)
