we're raising funds for restoration of one of the oldest masjids in singapore. masjid abdul ghafoor(its over a hundred yrs old). the masjid needs about $700K more to complete the restoration process. i am working with the youth wing of the masjid and we're planning to have an Islaamic Fair in september inshaa'Allah.

ill give you guys a rough picture of what we're planning to do and id appreciate if you cd throw in ideas :-[ as well.

we'll be having it outdoor so therefore it'll be held in a big tent. there'll be a stage at the front and all around the sides of the tent there'll be stalls selling things etc. - ranging from food to books to clothes to anythin. so for these stalls, we'll be asking muslim businesses and companies to take part. we'll also be writing to a couple of airlines and embassies for financial assistance. oh yes, the donation cards will be out soon.

as for the programmes we'll be having a nasheed competition(restricted to male groups only). a Qari to recite after the GOH arrives, and some children games. almost every other masjid sells briyani called 'briyani amal' for their fund raising that goes for abt 10 quid, so we're gonna be different by having kebab or shawarma.

we are planning to invite a few inter religious organisations to create more awareness, and hence there'll be a couple of asatizah present as well. im tryin to stress to the committee more on the da`wah aspect, to propagate the Deen as much as we can while we are raising funds:)

but we're abit short on ideas on how else we cd raise more funds ???
so id really be grateful if u guys have any ideas not just on the money making part but also any other programmes we cd have. or if any of you organised somethin like this. . . .

i apologise if it seems like a mess as im writing what comes to my mind. last but not least pls make dua that we'll please Allah with our efforts, achieve our target of raising the amt required and that the fair will be a success inshaa'Allah.

wa assalaamu`alaikum

If you have any islamic schools there you can ask the principal of those schools to participate in the fair by organising a play with the kids. The play could be about an average day at the muslim home or the celebration of Eid .This way children can participate aswell plus if you want people could sell tickets for the play in advance. That would bring in some extra money.
recently I went to an eid fair in london and they had a bouncing castle for the kids, if its possible to rent one you could have some entertainement for the kids aswell. perhaps a basketball hoop or something along those lines.
hope this helps.

Hello WhatDFish
I have raised funds for a couple groups here and had some suggestions if you'd like.

You mentioned a tent with merchants.

1) You can ask each person, merchant, vender to donate one main item for auction and have an auction about half way through the event.

2) Ask each family in the masjid to donate an item for the auction too. Maybe a handmade item. Crafts, blankets, clothing something sewn, crocheted, knitted, rugs, wood crafted item etc.

3) Go to business owners and ask if they would donate an item or a service.  Clothing, food, hair styling places, a sports shop could donate a basket or football.  A resturant a meal for two, the possibilities are endless.

A pet shop a cage or aquaium, a furniture store an small item, a heath food store a gift cetificate. A music store a copy of the Quran on tape or a book from a book store.

There are two ways ...  you can do both or one or the other.
If this is an all day event, do drawings and an action.

You can get a spool of tickets and sell for say $1 each and starting about 2 hours into the event every half hour draw two or three tickets and give away two or three things to the ticket holder. I would keep these items small.

The larger items I would have an auction where they can bid on them for the highest bidder. I would suggest holding the auction about half way through the event like at, or after lunch time. Do they have auctions in Singapore?

Another idea and I saw this done at a fund raiser. They had three tables. Each table had about 5 to 10 items on it. Table one was for $1 tickets,  Table two was for $5 tickets and Table Three was for $10  tickets. So small, med and large valued items.

People put tickets they buy with their name and address and phone number written on the back (in case they leave before the drawing) and  then at a certain specified time you draw one from the can of tickets and you continue to do so untill the prizes are gone.

Hope this helps. I have other ideas if you want. I don't know what is appropriate and what is not.
