One of my fav ukhti was harrassed recently.. So she was standing in the checkout isle ready to pay and the cashier said that after this lady I am closed. This guy behind her started cussing and said " Ooo so you would rather serve an AaaaRab than an American" Alhamdullilah, she is a converted hispanic Muslim.. So she turned around and said I am an American in the meanwhile 2 other sisters that she went with came forward and said what happened but SubhanAllah, the sister just let it go... However, the dumb guy said I am a Minister and he just started repeating it, like it was o.k for him to say that because hez a so called religious guy..
Do you think the sister did the right thing ? What would you have done in a similar situation?

[slm]Uhkti,

Hindsight is 20/20 and knowing me I would have thought of something wonderful to say after the fact.  I am not very good at on the spot reactions.  I think that she was wise in not blowing up, because this would have only helped to strengthen his prejudice.  I might have pointed out that I was not Arab,  because Muslims come from all different walks of life and the definition of a Muslim should not be so narrowly defined.  Unfortunately the world is full of racism and hatred  :'(

Sounds to me like the guy didn't believe her and was being sarcastic, and very, very rude in the process.  The levels to which some people will stoop ...  :(

Peace,
Dawn

I think the sister did the right thing because if she had spoken up, the man would find more reasons to be on her case.  Ppl like that look to start trouble and if the sister had started to get defensive and all, the man would start even more trouble.

Honestly, I don't think i would've been able to handle myself that well in a similar situation.  I'm the type of person that gets defensive very quickly (InshaAllah I'm working on that  :)), and I would've been getting angry at him.  So, you guys better watch out for me  ;D ;D

I am a pretty blunt and outspoken person. I try to be loving and kind but I admit I have little tollerance for rudeness and meaness.
Cara:
Subhanallah, I couldn't agree with you....I think I have the same case....

One time I was camping with my family. My mom, me, and sister, all niqaabis, were on our way to the washroom, and this one rude girl stops and asks if were hot. I said hell's hotter. She goes, how are you to know? In a really snotty, rude voice. I told her I don't be when she gets there she can tell me all about it okay? She was startled, turned and walked away. Pretty fast too....LOL  :-/

Another time, I was t=at the library with a huge stack of books. A really skimply dressed girl "pretends" to run into me knocking the books all over the floor. She sneered and turned to walk away. I told her to wait just a minute. Walked up to her, with my face real close to her, and since I wear kohl, and had my eyes only showing I looked real mean and feirce, told her if she didn't pick it all up, she was going to leave the library all messed up in a garbage bag. She was so frightened, she cleaned it all up and left so quick, I thought she probably wet her pants...LOL   ;D 8)
And since I have training in martial arts, I was real serious about messing her up...BAD.

wlm,

good points cara,  we can go on and on with all the strange, rude people that have made comments to us ie read the old threads on the old board with all our hillarious hijab stories....

but we should really take these as an opportunity to explain our faith and why we do certain things.  if we just return back their rudeness, first of all that isn't islamic, second of all it's benefiting no one, third of all it's giving islam and muslims a bad name, fourth it's reinforcing stereotypes etc, etc...

anyways i can tell you from experience most nonmuslims are really curious. some deal with it by completely ignoring your hijab/kufi/islamicness and totally treat it as invisible thinking you'll be offended if they ask something, and some others just blurt out something, which may be rude or catty or just stupid and offensive...

and that's why we should seriously just chill and try to explain it to them... even if we say 'oh it's part of my religion--you know modesty'.... they know right then -- one you can speak english!, two you believe in your religion, three your religion teaches morals like modesty! and that's a whole lotta dawah for free..... :-/

:D Or like the time those girls were talking in Spanish about us @ the subway and you understood them. Or the time those girls turned the lights out on us in that bathroom in Manhattan?

as salaamu alaykum wa rahmatAllah,

One time a group of us were chillin, walking down a street (this was after the college day @ meccah, for the albany crew) and we passed by some guys on a stoop who made the usual comments.. and we just kept walking.

But then I look around, and I'm like, "where's Laboogie?"  I turn around, and she's *back in front of the stoop*, giving those guys a piece of her mind.. hahaha..

One thing I know: don't mess with Laboogie  :o  You can take the girl out of Washington Heights, but you can't take the Heights out of the girl 8) (You know I love you chula :-*)

The only time I've ever truly *bugged out* on someone was in highschool.  This punko in my math class used to harass me *everyday* and I said nothing.. then one day he threw a paper clip at my head.. not a big deal, but I completely lost it  >:(  Haha.. the poor guy.. must think all sisters are psycho now..

wasalaamu alaykum :-)

I think by not causing a scene she did the right thing.  Answer back politely, firmly and factually.  If you are fortunate enough to come up with a "good" come back,  present it with a smile.  Let the harasser come off as the animal they really are and gain the support of the others around by being respectable.  :-X

>:(  OH wouldn't it feel good though, to rip into them.  Tell them just what a fool they are and leave them feeling about two inches tall.  :-[

I guess I just sometimes get tired of being the nice one.
