GAZA CITY, March 6 (IslamOnline & News Agencies) - Israel shelled Palestinian targets by land, air and sea Wednesday, demolishing a school for blind run by the United Nation Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) in an act strongly criticized by the United Nations. Palestinian President Yasser Arafat 's home in Gaza City and a U.N.-run school for the blind were severely damaged in an Israeli air strike on a nearby security compound. The blasts blew out windows and collapsed a back wall at Arafat's home. Arafat's wife and daughter live abroad and were not at the home. The Al-Nour Rehabilitation Center for the Visually Impaired, the only institution of its kind in Gaza Strip, has been extensively damaged by flying debris and the explosive force of the Israeli air raids. At least 15 classrooms have been damaged, dozens of windows have been ripped from their frames and a children’s playground and garden has been turned into a wasteland of twisted metal and rubble, UNRWA press release, issued Wednesday, March 6, reported. The school for the blind was destroyed by Israeli bombing raids on the Gaza police headquarter adjacent to it. UNRWA reported that the latest Israeli raid targeting the police headquarter has destroyed around half of the classrooms in the school. The United Nation Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees has protested in the strongest term to the Israeli government over the night raid on school of blind in Gaza City by the F16 bombing Tuesday, March 5. A Palestinian teacher looks out from the damaged U.N.-run school. “We will protest this action to the Israeli authorities [in] the strongest terms and will ask to be reimbursed for the damage,” UNRWA’s Commissioner General Peter Hansen said. “Under the terms of the international conventions, Israel has a duty to safeguard U.N. installations and personnel,” he added. “Such bombing raids in heavily populated civilian areas, next to school flying a U.N. flag that is bright lit at night, are totally unacceptable.” The damaged school for blind is the third UNRWA school raided by Israel in a few days. Two UNRWA schools in Balata and Jenin refugee camps in the West Bank were temporarily taken over by Israeli forces which led to the damage of both schools. |
