[slm] I'm a Software/Firmware Engineer, and have been looking for a job these past few weeks. These are the sites I use. http://www.dice.com (Many of the jobs here are from companies directly and you don't have to go through recruiters too much). http://www.monster.com (Very popular website, lots of recruiters post here). http://www.headhunter.net (Another popular site). http://www.hotjobs.com (Another good one). http://www.careerbuilder.com (I've found some unique jobs here). http://www.directemployers.com (This was a really good site, I found a lot of opportunities here). I think these sites will help you in your job search, things seem to be picking up these days, so insha'Allah something will turn up for me. I'm in the southern california area, in case anyone has an embedded software position. ;) |

Assalaamu alaikum, I need a job too! My areas: civil engineering, intelligent transportation systems, applied artificial intelligence, software engineering, R&D or faculty in engineering and computer science. Check my website for resumes! I have kinda lost faith in the job sites. I hardly ever get a response. Moreover, most jobs these days are for experienced professionals and academic experience is looked down upon :( Also, me no permanent resident or citizen, and these days that is also a problem! Inshallah, I am keeping my patience and trust in Allah swt to give to me what is best for me. Some other suggestions: Try going through a recruiter. Finding a good one though is difficult. I had several lousy ones. (BTW, if anyone has contacts of good recruiters, let me know.) Also, if you are experienced you might want to try to resumezapper.com (or other similar services) that send your resume to hundreds of recruiters for a fee. Wasalaam. geez, I have modified this post like 10 times in 5 minutes! Good thing it doens't put an edit line for each edit! |

[slm]
Assalaamu alaikum, (BTW, if anyone has contacts of good recruiters, let me know.)
What's your definition of a good recruiter? I've only been with one company as a contract engineer for 6 months before i became permanent in my current job. I thought they were decent. I had the same problem as you asim. Fresh out of school with zero experience (not even internships). I put my resume on the net and after a while this recruiting company called me up for a job opening. I did a couple of interviews and the rest is history.Alhamdulillah. Unfortunately most companies these days go through recruiters which means that unless you go through them as well or have some good networking going on, you won't hear about half of the job openings in the industry. So if you don't mind having no vacation time and getting ripped off on the health insurance(untill you become permanent), i'd say go for it! Here's the website of the recruiting company i went through: Aerotek I also have a local contact person..if you're interested IM me and i'll give it to you. Insh'Allah you'll find something soon :) [wlm] |

Wow, all these engineers! Care to give any advice to a 1st year mech eng student on how to get through the piles of assignments and other work? ;D Anyway, about searching for a job, aren't there agencies that can help you do effective searches on the internet, as well as searches in newspapers and other places? And how about job fairs or conventions where you meet people from your industry? I think a lot of universities are also willing to help you find a job if you're a recent graduate (I don't know if that applies here or not). Good luck in the job search! :-* Julie :) |

[slm] Engineering courses get harder as you go along, the first 2 years aren't so bad. But yeah, I am working with recruiters but they are having a difficult time finding jobs. 7 months ago when i was laid off from my previous job, i would get 10 calls a day, it was crazy, and i went to a bunch of interviews, now im getting 1 call a day on average, sometimes 2. i have a phone interview with some company on monday, but im seeing more positions opening up and im now being more aggressive in calling recruiters back and following up, because they are getting flooded with resumes and don't know who to send to the interviews. 7 months ago i was contacted by 42 different recruiting companies, now its a lot less, and the really good ones i dealth with last time, many of the good people in those companies are gone. so recruiters are even having it hard. i think things are looking promising in the job market, insha'Allah. |

Assalaamu alaikum,
your definition of a good recruiter?
Here is an example of a not-so-good recruiter. This one was recommended by someone. Me: Hi, my name is Asim, I was recommended by x... Him: <with indifference and lack of interest>Send me your resume, okay. Me: I recently graduated in so-and-so, have experience in so-and-so... Him: <interjects abruptly> Look Asim, I cannot hear you, there is a lot of static <hangs up> Yes, I have heard that the market is improving. Let's hope it is good for everyone looking for a job, inshallah. I remember a couple of years, when I was still away from graduation and only a resume on my website, I was getting a few calls every month and dozens of emails from recruiter looking to hire me! Yeah, times have changed. Wasalaam. |

[slm] Grrr, a recruiter called me to go down to their office this morning to discuss things (what im looking for, etc). >:( Insha'Allah the following doesn't happen to any of us out there: Man Gets Job Interview Call After 34 Years Calcutta, India (Reuters) - A man in the eastern Indian city of Calcutta who applied for a state government job 34 years ago finally got an interview call -- but said on Wednesday he was now too old for a post. Ravindra Nath Halder, 52 and a grandfather, was just a teen-ager when he put his name down for work at a state labor exchange office in Marxist-ruled West Bengal. Halder, a snackshop owner, said he was amazed to get the letter dated March 6 from the labor exchange asking him to come for an interview after so long. "I'd given up hope. I'd applied in 1968. I'm now 52 and too old for a government job," Halder, a father of two daughters and a son, told Reuters. In any event, anyone older than 37 is ineligible for a job in the state government or its affiliated organizations. But the family still hasn't abandoned hope one of them will get a job through the labor exchange. Halder's son put his name down at the exchange for a job four years ago but has not yet been called. "I hope he has better luck than me," he said. Labor minister Mohammad Amim told Reuters it often took a "long time" for a person to be called for an interview. "We have 77 state employment exchanges state-wide and more than 5.5 million persons are registered on them. Just 16-17,000 people listed get jobs every year," Amin said. West Bengal has a population of more 70 million people. |

wa alaikum us-salaam,
Grrr, a recruiter called me to go down to their office this morning to discuss things (what im looking for, etc).
Did they make you fill out a form (usually on a computer) with a zillion boxes?! Man I hate filling those pesky little boxes, a whole lifetime seems to be consumed by them! Why can't they just use resumes, parse them, or something, etc. |

[slm] Just a suggestion, why don't you guys do some volunteering work in a Muslim organisation. Heck some are pretty disorganised and one organisation will try and provide services in so many different areas e.g. from law, medicine, computing, councelling to teaching. But many of these organisations have links with professional Muslims from different fields. After being there you get to network with so many people so insha'Allah you may meet someone that could provide you a job in your field. Also you get to do lots of work for your da'wah! I did and I loved it! Hania. |
