Question about women correcting the imam

asalaamu alaikum,

I've got a homework question from the da'wah course I'm attending and was hoping someone could help me coz I'm stumped to find an answer:

why is it that men can correct the imam verbally, while women simply make noise by tapping their thigh with their hand??

i never heard that.  the women in our masjid speak outloud, i dont see the problem with it, no one can hear a tap on the thigh.....

women cant beautify their voice in front of men, for example by singing, but to correct an imam should not be a problem.....

First off this is my opinion, I just thought about it and came up with this possible answer.  :-[
I tried to picture the mosque... where are the women praying? At the back or in another room... definitely not right behind the Imam.
To correct the Imam men say "bismillah". Since they are fairly near, physically, to the Imam, the Imam will hear this when it is said quietly.
Try to imagine the woman saying bismillah. She has to shout either from the back rows, or from the next room. So it's not a quiet, subtle correction it's more like "HEY!! BISMILLAH!!!". Whereas if she claps her hands, this is significantly louder, yet not demeaning to either the woman or the Imam.

I know it's probably a stupid answer, but it's all I could come up with..

Sahl ibn Sa'd As-Sa'di relates the the Prophet  [saw] said,  "If someone is faced with something during the salah, he should say subhanallah."   "Clapping is for women and saying 'subhanallah' is for men."  This is related by Ahmad, Abu Daw'ud, and Nasa'i.

Eleanor made some really good points.  Another one that I might add (which is just a guess) is that some consider the woman's voice also part of her Aurah.

just my two cents.  :-*
some consider the woman's voice also part of her Aurah.
what kind of evidence do people use to say that the woman's voice is part of her awrah?  i can think of some ahaadith which can be used for saying that *beautifying* the voice for women is awrah ... but her voice itself being awrah?

does anyone know any evidences for this?

slm,

here's an article by Qaradawi on how women's voices are NOT awrah, he does give some of the arguments for why people say it is and then argues against them. http://jannah.org/sisters/qaradawi.html

sorry flyboy.... i thought you meant correcting the imam at a lecture or soem sort....

but this past ramadhan during taraweeh once, the imam was making mistakes soooo much, none of the men seemed to know the correction so a women corrected him and no one said anythign to her, so i thought i t was always ok.....
