What is Salaaamz

Assalamu alaikum all....

I wanted to ask everyone on the forum, what is salaamz.  I even found myself using it the other day...i was disappointed with myself...I see this new trend of people using salaams to greet people and and leave people.  I know it probably seems like a small issue but I think its something that needs to be clarified.
Salaaams....means peaces(plural) .....salaaam... means peace.....The goal of  [slm] is plain....Like too many other things we are changin the way we greet people now.   I went to a lecture today and the speaker was talkin about the way we were changin what has been laid out for us to follow.  Some a u thinkin...man this kids really tightly wound..but for real...think about it ...U use it...a few generations down the road...its gonna disappear...and we're gonna be left with ....Wut up dog...and aite im out.....I mean for stuff that is laid out for us like greeting people...something which isnt in the gray region......we got a sunnah for it...then shouldnt we follow it... I thought u guys would agree...Notice i noticed it in me first ...thats why im admonishin (oooh big word)....all of my fellow muslimeen ..... a couple of of hadiths to kinda see the importance....

It is reported by way of '`Abdillãh bin `Amr  that a man asked the Prophet : Which of Islam is the best? He said: "To feed the food and to recite As-Salãm (which is the title given to saying As salaamu alaikum) upon whom you know and whom you don't know."
(bukhari & muslim)

It is narrated on the authority of `Abdullah ibn Mas`ood: The Messenger of Allah, sallallahu `alaihi wa sallam, said, what means: "Verily, in the presence of the Last Hour, giving salam would be limited to those known, trade would spread, until even a wife assigns her husband to trade for her, ties of kinship would be broken, and false testimony, concealing evidence and the calligraphic style (reed pen) would appear." (A sound hadith related by Ahmad and Hakim).

....Anyways... ..im out  ;).... :P.... jus jokiiiiiin

assalamu alaikum....instead of wasalaammzzzzz

asalaamu alaikum,

you're so right about the language changing to the point of absurdity, so much of it comes from the American hip hop culture.. i remember a thread on the old board where se7en was translating the lingo for us and I was thinking "do people actually talk like that???"

Anyway when people use language like that I'm like  ::).... lets just hope its a dying trend.

wasalaam,
;-)

aight, I know that I say peace when im about to bounce, w/non-muslims and somethings muslims (I do say [slm]). I guess it all depends, I dont know, I dont see the problem with it.  Dont some arabs say ma'salaam ...what does that mean? my salaams? Why dont we say something about that? We just say oh its their culture,etc...but when it invloves the american culture, hip hop culture whatever u want to call it...we then what to look at it and say oh what are saying brothers and sisters??? I dont know, just my 3 cents....

slm,

thanx for the little reminder chakhoo. i think when people say salaams or salaamz they are saying 'lots of peace',  ma'salaama means 'with peace',  salaam means 'peace', and hi... who knows what that means :)  but the best greeting is assalaam alaikum with muslims because we actually get reward for it, the others we don't. and we can use all the reward we can get eh...!

[slm],

Guess what is going to be our greeting to each other in Jannah, Taheeyyatus Salam! Why not practice it the way we would do it in Jannah inshaAllah?

But again we should not look down upon people who say Salaamz or peace. Their intention is something we can not doubt. They really intend to make dua of peace for us.

Walaikum ASalam Wa RhamatuAllah,

JazakumAllahu Khair for this beautiful reminder,  I myself use salamz a lot and indeed have been classically conditioned.  Actually, this reminds me of when people say "hamdulla" instead of Alhamdullilah!!!! The first time when i came across it, i was kinda mad.. huh so I guess the same goes with  [slm].

JazakumAllahu Khair
Asalamu Alykum Wa RahmatuAllah  :-X

[slm],

Some people do say Humdulillah. Which is the same without the definitive article Al before it as it appears to me, people who know arabic should correct me if I am wrong. So its pretty close in meaning and it still stays in the same language unlike Salaamz which is kind of Engrabi neither english nor arabic! Although Alhamdulillah is obviously preferable to Humdulillah.

actually there's no such phrase in arabic called "hamdulillah"

it's "alhamdulillah"

if you want to make it indefinite, then "alhamdu" becomes "hamdun" ... so the indefinite form would be "hamdun lillah" or "hamdullillaah" (2 L's after 'u')

right yaa ustaadhah shaamiyyah??  :)

wassalamu alaikum

bro stop pretending you know arabic..  :P

In our msa we got into a debate about whether the proper greeting is *as* salaamu alaykum, or salaam*un* alaykum.

A bro argued that the verse in the Qur'an about the greeting of Jannah is indefinite (ie "salaam-un alaykum").  Which is true, but is that verse where we get the greeting from?  I read a story of a companion who greeted Rasulullah [saw] with "as salaamu alaykum", and the story mentioned that this was how the greeting was established.  *but* I was just listening to the Lives of the Prophets series (by Anwar al-Awlaqi) and he says that it originated with Allah subhana wa ta'ala in greeting Adam alayhis salaam.

Can anyone clarify for me?

Jazakam Allahu khayran :)

wasalaaaaaaaaaaamu alaykum wa rahmatAllah :)

[slm] :-) [sub]bsm[/sub]

[tt]Question 1[/tt] : what is the correct way of signing off at the end of a letter / post?

What I mean is - when you start to speak, you make Salam, so when you end that conversation or post, should one not make Salam ( [slm])once again as opposed to saying Walaikum As Salam ( [wlm]) ? - just curious :-)

[tt]Question 2[/tt] : where and how does Was Salaam fit into all of this?

[tt]Question 3[/tt] : How do you respond when a non-Muslim makes Salam to you?

Someone once said that by replying to the person you are bestowing Allah's belssing's upon that person and that is not right.  I dis-agree as i don't belive that it is up to us to decide upon whom Allah swt will "shower" with his blessings - any comments please?
Jazak Allah for your time :-)

[slm] - [tt]hmm.....subject to correction on all accounts here[/tt] :-)

ok here's the deal... in the quran it might say salamun alaikum but the prophet [saw] never taught that. throughout his sunnah and practice and the practice of the campanions it has always been Al-Salamu Alaikum

and the verse that is mentioned below is not taken to be as a rule for all Muslims to say that, according to ibn kathir it means one should return the salam of believers and a whole bunch of other stuff...

and Allah knows best :)

Actually both salaamun alaikum (with a tanween dhammah) or assalaam alaikum (with the definite article "al") are correct in Arabic. The first one not being defined doesn't mean "a" peace, sister Jannah, but "peace".  Just as Allah, ta'aalaa, said in al-an'aaam (6:54)
æÅÐÇ ÌÇÁß ÇáÐíä íÄãäæä ÈÆÇíÇÊäÇ ÝÞá ÓóáÇãñ Úáíßã
The meaning is translated as: and when those that believe in our aayaat (signs, revelations) come to you,  say "salaamun alaikum".
So the first means "peace be unto you, the second "the peace upon you".
Both very acceptable, Allah knows best,  since Allah ordered the Prophet,  [saw] to use the indefinite salaamun in the Qur'an.

One little comment, the default Arabic font on the borad seems too small to me.  I had to upsize it to make it legible.

[slm],

As far as replying to salam of non-muslims I heard our Imam answer this once. As far as I can remember you can say Wa'alaikum and stop there or something like that. Assalamu Alaikum is a dua we make for our brothers/sisters. The apropriate dua for non-muslims is "may Allah guide you".
