A Sister had recently written this essay type thing and she wanted to make sure that it was okay and if it had the potential to help and benefit Muslims in any way. Please do reply with suggestions for improvments, or any other comments which may help, InshaAllah  :)

TV - Good, or No Good?

There actually are reasons why people refer to the TV as a 19inch Shaytan. It's very true that not everything you see on TV is "wrong" BUT We as Muslims should realize that there are some things which we can't ignore.

True, educational documentaries, history shows, and such of the like are very beneficial Alhamdulillah. Other things such as watching an episode of the Simpsons, Friends, or even the Fresh Prince of Bel Air causes our Iman to weaken, probably without us even realizing it. True, this doesn't happen to everyone, but generally speaking.

Let's discuss "HARAAM" shall we? Looking at a non mahram is haraam..correct? There are many Ayats in the Qur'an where Allah swt commands us to do things. We are taught to lower our gazes - now how does one manage to do that while watching TV? Even a news program like CNN, men are sitting on their couches and staring straight at a woman who is not covered as she should be. Sitcoms and other programs also contain people which women stare at (handsome men in tight shirts looking "fine, hot, cute, and sexy"). How many people look at the television screen and lower their gazes if a member of the opposite sex comes on? How many people look away if a person is dressed indecently on the screen? Do we push the "OFF" button everytime some Non Mahram comes onto the screen - which is almost 100% of the time?

A person can always argue back saying that it's not US who are doing it, it's THEM. We aren't the ones who are uncovered or dressed without modesty. We don't have our hair done and makeup set for the world to see and enjoy. It's true, isn’t it? BUT It's also true that WE have control over ourselves. That our eyes are committing zina each time we glance at someone forbidden to us, whether it be at the Mall or on TV. Our hands are committing zina by clicking on the remote to turn the television on, knowing how many indecent and unIslamic things are contained in our 19inch box that sits very well placed in our living rooms and family rooms, sometimes even bedrooms.

Heated scenes, drugs, violence and all that pushed aside, we should remember Allah swt. He has set upon our shoulders two angels who are to record our every action and deed. These angels won't stop while we're looking at something haraam. They'll record it and on the Day of Judgment Allah swt will confront us of our blatant disobedience and sinful actions. What excuses will we have for Him? It's been taught to Muslims that we are to follow the Sunnahs of our beloved Prophet (saw). Everything which was in his life is in ours, just in a different form. Can we honestly say that the Prophet (saw) would have sat down to watch something (something similar to a television - form of entertainment - could have been plays, dances, acts, etc.. which might have gone on during his time)? Allahu Alim when concenring everything though.

It might seem like such a small thing. I mean, it's only the TV. Who cares, we're smart enough to understand what's right and what's wrong. What we should pay attention to and what we shouldn't. If this is truly the case, then shouldn't we do what our Lord has commanded us to do? Should we not follow the Holy Qur'an and these precious words of wisdom from Muhammad (saw)? We know why we were sent down and were given this life. As a test for all humanity. To prove that we are Muslims and to show Allah swt and OURSELVES that we can turn Islam into our life. It IS our life and we should make it such. Apply it to every aspect of our being, actions throughout the day, and even thoughts which go on in our minds. Allah is the All Knowing and All Aware. He knows what's in our hearts and what's not. Our intentions, actions, everything and anything He is going to judge us on when the Day of the Qiyamah comes.

We live this life for the hereafter. Is watching thirty minutes of television going to cause more harm or good for us in the afterlife? Will it increase our knowledge in our Deen more or just give us a new slang word to use with our friends to look cool? Our lives can end at any given moment. We will be resurrected in the same state when, which the Angel of Death came to take our souls away so that our lives in this world may end. Do we want to stand in front of Allah swt and everyone who has ever lived in the condition of doing something meaningless, or in the state of something which  could be beneficial to us? It’s our choice.

May Allah swt guide us all on the Straight Path -  Ameen.

Ameen to the above Dua.

There aren't many famillies that I know of who don't have a television in their homes. It really is a sad case, especially with all that goes on within that screen people gaze at so unwaveringly. A bit scary. True, there are good things which come on for educational purposes and stuff, but aren't those not as highly numbered as all those "not so good" things? ((Sigh)) I'm trying to make people in my own house cut down but no avail yet. InshaAllah soon though. I can be stubborn too :) That, and I've heard sharp objects along some of these wires don't do well for the viewing lol

asalaamu alaikum,

I think the psychological impact that tv has is a real concern, also the long term impact on health when you're sitting there inactive, when you could be doing something and getting exercise.

Until around 5 years ago, they didn't have any tv in Fiji, now that they have people, expecially young girls have become addicts of certain programmes...whereas before they used to work outside and sweep the yard, they now sit glued to the tube.  They are influenced by the adverts, which subliminally program them with how they should look and what they should buy.

Compare Fiji before and after tv and you see a huge difference... my friend offered the hypothesis once that dajjal could use tv to influence the masses and he'd probably do it through the music video scene....because the No 1 song generally gets played in most countries.

something to think about...becoming a slave to tv may lead you to become a slave of dajjal  :o hmm time to cut down on my tv viewing.

just my thoughts, wasalaam,

Ahmed

Salaam

I went with my friend to a jewish area the other day and we were
talking about jews being so religious there. He said something very
interesting that most jews dont allow TVs because its 'like having an open sewer
in the house', their quote.

Just makes you think, even our imams have TVs in their house.
