al-Rihla Summer Program 1423/2002
to be held in Abiquiu, NM, at Dar al-Islam

All praise is due to Allah, and May His Peace and
Blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad and upon his
family, and his companions and all those who follow
his way until the Day of Judgement, Ameen.

The al-Rihla Summer Program will take place in
Abiquiu, New Mexico from July 27, 2002 to August 18,
2002, for a total of 22 teaching days at the Dar
al-Islam facility in Abiquiu. Applications are open
from March 1, 2002 until April 27, 2002 to both
brothers and sisters.

The al-Rihla Program is sponsored by Deen Intensive
Inc. (www.deen-intensive.com).

"WHY SHOULD I ATTEND?" The spirit of our tradition as
transmitted by the Prophet Muhammad - Allah bless him
and give him peace - and his successors, is based on
an approach to teaching and learning that connects the
seeker of knowledge to its sacred origin. The approach
of the al-Rihla program is rooted in the authentic
narration known as the Jibril Hadith. This narration
acts as a basis for the three dimensional approach to
our tradition which will be the core focus of the
program: islam (fundamentals of action), iman
(fundamentals of belief), and ihsan (spiritual
excellence). It has been our experience that these
programs act as a means for students to re-connect
themselves with the rich tradition of Islam that is so
lacking in the societies we live in today.

THE TEACHERS Praise be to Allah, many scholars, both
local and international have been confirmed for the
program. Teachers confirmed in attendance are Shaykh
Hamza Yusuf, Director of the Zaytuna Institute, Shaykh
Jamal al-Zahabi (Lebanon), Imam Zaid Shakir (USA),
Shaykh Abdullah al-Kadi (Saudi Arabia).

THE SITE The program will be held on the grounds of
the Dar al-Islam Institute in Abiquiu, New Mexico. Dar
al-Islam was designed by the late Hassan Fathi; those
familiar with his work will know the site is
beautifully designed both inwardly and outwardly.
Accommodation and food information is detailed below.
Abiquiu is a small town about two hours north of New
Mexico's largest city, Albuquerque, and about 45
minutes away from the capital city of New Mexico,
Santa Fe. Students will be expected to arrange their
own transportation from their point of origin to the
Albuquerue International Airport in Albuquerque, New
Mexico. The program volunteers will arrange for pickup
and drop-off from the airport. Please be advised that
the program organizers will not be held responsible if
an applicant books a non-refundable ticket before
acceptance to the program has been confirmed.

CURRICULUM This year's program will focus on the
following core subjects: fiqh (Islamic Jurisprudence),
ihsan (Spiritual Excellence), and tajwid (Proper
Qur'anic Recitation). As with last year's program,
Arabic will remain as a non-component to this year's
program to facilitate more time for students to focus
on and comprehend the core subjects. The Ibn Ajurrum
Program will be held prior to the al-Rihla Program to
facilitate Arabic learning; more information can be
found here. Students will be expected to arrive on
July 27th; no exceptions will be made. Students will
be expected to depart on August 18th; again, no
exceptions will be made.

COURSE MATERIALS Upon acceptance to the program,
students will be sent detailed information regarding
the site and program, including maps of the site,
schedules and biographies of teachers, along with
readings that must be reviewed in advance of the
program. Additional materials (if any) will be
provided on site.

ACCOMMODATIONS Accommodations for brothers will be in
three yurts on the Dar al-Islam grounds. Each yurt
contains 10 bunk beds, thus housing 20 brothers per
yurt. Sisters will be accommodated in the main
madrassa/mosque complex, in four dormitory areas with
a total of 27 bunk beds, thus housing up to 54
sisters. There are two additonal dorms outside the
madrassa complex where an extra 16 brothers or sisters
will be housed - a decision on which gender will
occupy that space will be made as it becomes clearer
which gender will recieve more spots in the program
(depending on the gender divide from the application
pool). There is no accommodation available outside the
Dar al-Islam campus and this year's particpants will
be capped at 130 in number. There are *no*
arrangements for married couples this year and there
will be no arrangments made for and no facilition for
those wishing to secure "outside" or "separate"
accommodations. Accommodations for the program are
offered from July 27, 2002 - August 18, 2002. Students
coming earlier and/or departing later should make
their own accommodation arrangements for those days.

FOOD We are planning to hire a highly qualified
cooking staff for the duration of the program. Food
will be three meals per day, mixed cuisine, with less
emphasis on meat in the diet. Those with special
dietary requirements or allergies should include this
information along with their application.

Insha'allah the application deadline for this program has been extended until May 24, so there is still time!

The theme for the program is "Rihla to the Book of Allah", and much of the subject material will focus on cultivating the Muslim's proper understanding and love for His Glorious Qur'an.

Workshops in relevant areas such as public speaking, media relations, and the like will also be offered as a way to bridge the gap between theory and practical application in today's troubled world.

The venue is Dar al Islam's beautiful site in Abiqiu, NM, to have a look see check http://www.daralislam.org/about/#abiquiu

In addition to the stellar line up of teachers, insha'allah students will be able to enjoy group hiking excursions and post-Isha Islamic astronomy lessons under the New Mexico sky.

Apply soon while you still can!  Visit www.deen-intensive.com
