But the surgery is particularly in demand in Muslim countries. That's because Islamic tradition places great value on women raising children for their husbands -- through whom family lineage is traditionally traced -- yet Islamic law bans most adoptions and surrogacy arrangements.
[tt]as usual - correct me if i am wrong here[/tt]...but aren't they confusing a cultural norm with a religiuos law (again!)

Where in Islam are orphans or their rights frowned upon?  If anything, Islam ensures that the orphans are looked after and it is encumbent on all of us to do so.

Am i missing the boat here? Jazak Allah -  [slm]

the statement that Islam bans most adoptions really got to me. one thing i liked the most about Islam when i started to learn about it was there's an answer or solution for everything. so i thought adoption would be permitted as to give orphans the family structure every child needs. am i wrong to think that? i dunno, but that really got to me.

Any scholars in the house?

Is this transplant good or bad in terms of whats islaamically acceptable in medicine?

This seems to show that the Muslim medicine is far more advanced than that in the west.  ;-)

What do you mean Islam bans adoption???!!!  Islam has a history of loving that people adopt children and take care of orphans. I mean the prophet [saw] was an orphan himself. Orphans are mentioned so many times in the Quran.  There are so many injunctions against abusing the rights of orphans.

The only thing that is not allowed is for someone to lie to their child and tell them they are not an orphan or adopted and give them their last name.  This is because children have a right to know, have a right to know their lineage and where they came from and a right to their own identity.

ugh i really pray people don't learn islam from western writtten media articles :( esp now...

alhamdulillah you asked about what you felt uncomfortable with!!! so many people don't and i think they go away with disliking something about islam which is really that they don't understand what is meant!!!

jannah, that's exactly what i learned. somewhere in the article it says Islam bans most adoptions and surrogacy arrangements.
i started this thread for the uterus transplant part of it.
i'm really curious what everyone thinks of it. personally, i would not want to have that done. i would rather adopt. i don't know if this procedure is 100% halal, but even if it was....i would not even consider it.
what do the sisters think? brothers, what do you think about this for your wives?

Personally, I would not go through with it, especially after having been through the whole gamut of infertility treatment already myself.  I know how draining, emotionally and physically, that is, so to precede that with a surgery that would leave my immune system turned off so that I wouldn't reject the uterus ... I think that would be more that I would be able to deal with.  Each person's limits are different though.

A question on the same topic.  While we were waiting and wondering if we were going to be able to have a baby, we looked into adoption, primarily foreign adoption, as the waiting times were much shorter.  Many babies up for adoption from foreign countries have been abandoned, and the charities caring for them have no way of knowing the parentage of these children.  These babies may or may not be orphans.  Their parentage is simply unknowable.  If a Muslim family were to adopt such a child, should they give him or her their last name, so that the child has a last name?  Thankfully, many of these children do find loving homes.  My sister and her husband are currently in the process of adopting three such girls from Haiti.

Peace,
Dawn

I think I read somewhere that it would be acceptable to give a child of uncertain parentage the last name "Abdullah".  I think it literally means "Servant of God."  That would be a nice alternative.  :-)

Salaamu alaikom,

hi everyone, I'm new here so let me introduce myself: zyad from saudi

this is sort of old news (the thing about the transplant).
the head doctor and hear team are now under investigation.
apparently she didn't take permission from the pacients or their agreement was gotten without giving them a clear idea of what was going to happen.
the doctor and her team also claimed to have done the experiment succefuly on animals (monkey's). but could not/ would not produce the results when asked. more info later

salaam
