There's a student doing a project on Islamic women and their
beautification and clothing rituals. She would really
appreciate it if you could take to time to help her
with her research so she can present the information in a
factual and personable form.

You can fill this out here or let me know and I'll give you her email. JazakiAllah khair

======================================================

1. Please give a short background of your
cultural/religious heritage.

2. Why do/don't you choose not to wear the hijab, and
do you receive any criticism from your family or
friends?

3. What beautification rituals (ex. dyeing of hair,
piercing's, tattoos, plucking eyebrows etc.) do
participate in and why, also which ones do you choose
not to participate in and why?

4.  Are there any certain rules of clothing and dress
that you adhere to, and how do you dress at home and
in public?

5.  In the terms of clothing, beautification, and
covering your flesh, how do your views differ from the
traditional views of your religion?

Thank you for your time.

1. Please give a short background of your
cultural/religious heritage.

American- Born in the 50's Used to be Roman Catholic. I have been a Muslim for 15 years.

2. Why do/don't you choose not to wear the hijab, and
do you receive any criticism from your family or
friends?

I do choose to wear hijab- no criticism. In the beginning just  a wonderment of "why in the world do you wear that?" Everyone is now used to it- except Dad.

3. What beautification rituals (ex. dyeing of hair,
piercing's, tattoos, plucking eyebrows etc.) do
participate in and why, also which ones do you choose
not to participate in and why?

Dye my hair. ears were pierced in the 70's. Styling hair, softening skin, makeup and body hair removal - (legs, arm, etc...) - things that my husband and I enjoy.

By asking the question-"which ones do you choose not to participate in" is a leading questiom. It insinuates that plucking eyebrows, tattooing, etc... is a beautification.

4.  Are there any certain rules of clothing and dress
that you adhere to, and how do you dress at home and
in public?

I cover myself when going out.  At home I am comfortable as any traditional American. In the winter- pants and sweater, in the summer- shorts and a t- shirt.
In public I am wearing basically the same thing, except I usually wear a long coat (jilbab) over my clothes.

The scarf I wear outside my home, I do not wear it at home if just my family is there.

5.  In the terms of clothing, beautification, and
covering your flesh, how do your views differ from the
traditional views of your religion?

There are no traditional views of clothing in our religion. We are just told to cover- not what to wear.

It is in the cultures that you will find the differences.

We are allowed to beautify ourselves- stuff like tattoos and wigs, are not allowed.  There are other restrictions- but to me they are not considered a beauty inhancement- so I wouldn't do them anyway.
