Assalaamu'Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh! Dearest Sisters: Many of us (including myself) watch movies. Many of us don't really think they are Haraam if we don't see anything bad (i.e., sex). Some of us even watch movies that have sexuality in it, and don't even realize because we are so desensitized. There are a few reasons why its Haraam, but one of the biggest reasons T.V. is Haraam is because Women should not look at men they are not married or related too, and Men should not look at Women they are not married or related too, as states in the Qur'aan: Tell the believing men to lower their gaze (from looking at forbidden things), and protect their private parts (from illegal sexual acts). That is purer for them. Verily, Allâh is All-Aware of what they do. And tell the believing women to lower their gaze (from looking at forbidden things), and protect their private parts (from illegal sexual acts)” [al-Noor 24:30-31 ~~~~ Saheeh al-Bukhaari (6343) it is reported that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Every son of Adam has his share of zinaa decreed for him, and he will undoubtedly get his share. The eye commits zinaa and its zinaa is looking. The tongue commits zinaa and its zinaa is speaking; the feet commit zinaa and their zinaa is walking; the hands commit zinaa and their zinaa is touching. The heart longs and desires for something and the private parts confirm that or deny it." He began by mentioning the eye because this is how the zinaa of the hand, foot, heart and private parts begins. By mentioning the zinaa of the tongue, he pointed out that the mouth can commit zinaa by speaking. And he stated that the private parts can confirm that if they make the deed happen, or deny it if that does not happen http://63.175.194.25/index.php?ln=eng&ds=qa&lv=browse&QR=363 3&dgn=3 Ruling on watching TV - Q&A Library- Islam Q&A ~~~~~~~ (I am not taking to anyone in specific when I say this, just in general) I am not in anyway trying to encourage ppl to watch T.V. I am saying that we should give it up and if you are not going to give it up now, then you should not watch movies with sexuality in them. A sister asked if we had seen certain movies that put Islaam down, and one she mentioned was called Swordfish, I checked this movie on this website called http://KidsinMind.com and on a scale of 1-10 (10 being the most) in sexuality, the movie was a 7!! I believe that we should never recommend a movie; especially if it has sexuality in it, even if it has some importance in it!!!!!!! Movies in itself are Haraam lets not add onto it!!!! Again I am NOT saying this to encourage you to watch movies, since you may still watch movies, I just wanna try to help you take the first step to stop, like us. An example: My husband and I use to listen to music. When we learned it was Haraam we: 1st stopped listening to bad lyrics 2nd only once in a while we wood listen to it 3rd we stopped altogether Alhumdulilah!!!! (same w/T.V.) Remember we are supposed to obey Allah and also set an example for our children!! May Allah help us all!! Allah huma Ameen!!! To Find out how much Sex, Violence, and or/profanity is in a movie, use these sites http://KidsinMind.com http://FilmRatings.com Let us try to help one another to stop this InshaAllah!!! There are other opinions on TV and Movies and Music that do not declare them all categorically haram. So those interested can ask their local Imam or religious person....:) |

But mostly I was mentioning the fact of watching things that have sexuality in it.... Your Sis in Islaam Jenna |

assalamu alaikum i think TV in general is very bad and so too is music. i have been able to give up one but not the other. we made the decision in our house to switch the tv off and although i do miss it i know it is very beneficial to have it off. recently there have been some programmes on islam and i have been tempted to put it back on but i know that there is very little good in tv and it should just never be switched on again. it is such an evil. we left the radio so we could stay connected to the world (like listen to news etc) but i am very bad and still listen to music. we did buy papers for a time but it such a waste of money and that is another evil in it self. i'm fasting now and that is helping me to stop listening to the radio. but you know what i get so bored! at least it is the right thing to do. wa alaikum assalaam |

Assalam Alaikum Waramatullah, I gave up watching TV about 2 months ago. Alhamdulillah... SubnaAllah it is really difficult, May Allah make it easy for us to obey Him. Ameen. I spend a lot of my time reading and attending halaqas. I won't lie it really gets boring sometimes. If anyone has ideas on how to keep oneself busy.... please post! As for radio... I listen to a Quran radio station in saudi arabic: http://www.kacst.edu.sa/en/stream/Quran-Radio-Station.asx It is in arabic, alhamdulillah it is very good. As I am studying arabic it helps me to acustom my ear to the arabic language. They give lots of darusu, and they also have a section on world news, and they have a program where a shaikh explains the hadeeth. Every morning 7.30am my time people call in to ask different Shuykhu questions. And they have lots of other programs ... Wa Salam Kareem |

The masjid and the youth idea is definately great.  That thought just never occured to me.  :-[ I leave a little far from the masjid and I visit only weekends... but then I go for my own little program  :) I have 2 arab brothers who help me with my arabic grammar.  and getting a  [] isn't a bad idea only if I was not that picky of what I take in. |

[slm] talking about TV... once my 6 yr old brother said he wished we had a TV. my sis told him that he had so many books and toys, and the computer too, we have no need for TV, etc. and he says "but you don't have to do anything with a TV." |

As-salaamu 'alaikum wa rahmatullah Ironically, time still flies even after I stopped watching TV/listening to music, but alhamdulillah, not watching also gives much more time to DO rather than to WATCH. I think that's what Muslims really lack these days, and I remind myself first. Someone (can't remember who) said it well: television shows are just FILLER for ADVERTISEMENTS. Actors, journalists, producers, etc, they all make their money off their sponsors. That's the whole purpose of television. Content-wise, filler *and* ads work as pretty effective social engineering enhancements. And do you notice that after listening to the radio (or even your alarm clock if it's set to a station), you're stuck with the last song/melody you heard for hours? Imagine if that was replaced with something beneficial. And imagine what we're being desensitized to? I just learned that according to some scholars, watching a murder/killing is haram, unless done for purposes of hudood punishment. Imagine! And how many lewd things are children watching per day, even in so called 'G' rated programming? Some satellite programming is provided for FREE in Muslim countries, ever wonder why? It's called "PROGRAMMING" for a reason! Ok, I could go on and on (back in the day, was pretty influenced by Hamza Yusuf's views on television, in case you can't tell). If you haven't read "Strangers in our Homes", you should. It's loosely based on Dr. Susan Johnson's "TV and Our Children's Minds." http://www.ihyaproductions.com/tape_catalogue/descriptions/bk-112.html Dr. Johnson pretty much breaks down the affects of watching television (and not even going too deeply into the context of what they watch, even just the act of watching tv is damaging) on young children. Although much of what she writes is based on past research (a lot of it pretty scary), she also gives her own insight as a pediatrician and mother: -------------------------------- A Pediatrician's Concerns When Dr. Susan R. Johnson presented a paper to the Waldorf School of San Francisco in May 1999, detailing the effects of television on children, she quoted Endangered Minds author Jane Healy, Ph.D. with this troublesome statement: "Television anesthetizes our higher brain functions and disrupts the balance and interaction between the left and right hemispheres." Johnson was also concerned about her own son's behavior as it related to watching television. "He was so unresponsive to me and to what was happening around him, that he seemed glued to the television set. Instead of creating his own play themes, he was simply re-enacting what he had just seen on TV in a very repetitive, uncreative and stilted way," she says. |

actually, i was wondering myself about music...arent there some instruments that were around during the prophet [saw]'s time? and he allowed them? i thought only contemporary music, with its inappropriate language and suggestions wasnt allowed...but then again, whos to decide? (sounds like a good halaqa topic, no?) |
