[Fitness] Plain Jane or Ghee Halwas

[slm],

Brothers(and sistaz if you have ventured into the most exciting thread on the board) do you care what you eat or are you just not bothered ?

The other day I were thinking that its been 3 months since I had a real greasy fry up or a real deep fried burger with enough oil on the chips to style my beard. I must say I do feel physically better yet I do crave for the burgers now and then.

Do you think its important for a guy to be creful to what he eats, look after his physique before and after marrige or should he just eat whatever, whenver and let the belly grow so when he stands up and looks down he can't even see his feet. And would you say the food you consume is healthy ?.

Salaams

Definitely a bro has got to keep his weight in check all the time and needs to look after his health.

I was pretty amazed at what you had for breakfast, it was pretty healthy, could you list out for us what a typical day is for you in terms of eating.  Maybe you could write a book, Bro Hanif's Muslim Guide to Healthy Eating . :)

I've been cutting back on the  [] and replacing it with water.  But I think like many people I have a sweet tooth. ;)

I dont know if this applies to others, but non-fried foods make me feel better when i eat. When i eat a lot of fried stuff, crisps, drink fizzy pop etc, i usually end up feeling bloated, etc. Its hard to explain.

But generally speaking, a lot of the food i eat is grilled, oven baked, but the rest is indian cooking, indian food.

I dont really think about "will it make me fat" although their was a time i thought like that."

Now its a case of "will i feel ok after i eat it, or will i feel uncomfotable, bloated etc!"

I think if you generally eat less, dont fill your stomuch up, you feel better for some reason.

But we blokes DO need to keep our physiques in good shape, toned, firm, and strong. After all, the SISTERS aint gona carry the shopping home  ;) The will just slowly strut along besides you like this  []

Think again Mister  >:(

Dearest Bro Mujy

Us ladies do not strut after the shopping (since almost none of us are crazy enuff to wear high heels to the Mall).  After cruising the aisles for GOOd stuff for the family, including the hubby, while the same hubby just mumble "aiyah just take the nearest stuff" we deserve the rest while the same nonchalant hubby should carry the shopping bags  :P

BTW....for those interested, here are some food tips which served me well when I needed to stay fit.

Breakfast (for 7 days)

Brans and mueslis with low fat low cal yoghurt
Oats and almond flakes with honey and low fat and low cal yoghurt
Two slices of high grained bread with diabetic friendly low cal jam
Blended grapefruit with teaspoon of honey and low fat low cal milk
fruit salad (green apples, pears and pineapples) with lowfat low cal yoghurt
2 plain biscuits and low fat low cal glass of milk
Power drink (lowfat low cal milk blended together with lowfat lowcal choc/strawberry powder and low fat plain digestive biscuits)

Lunch (u shd eat carbo for energy and brain food)

A small bowl of plain rice porridge eaten with a dish of vegetables and fish
2 boiled potatoes with lotsa black pepper and a side dish od green salad
Plain boiled pasta cooked with vegetarian tomato sauce
Rice with lotsa vegetables and fish
Sandwich (high grain bread with lotsa lettuce and tomatoes and chicken salami)
Potato salad using low fat low cal mayo and boiled chicken breasts
Macaroni soup with chicken meat

Dinner (avoid red meat)

Salad and baked chicken
Clear vegetable soup and spicy fish
Whole bowl of cooked vegetables and fish
Large helping of vegetables and roasted chicken
Bowl of clear broth and cooked chicken (any style)
Roasted chicken with steamed broccoli
Vegetable soup and cooked fish

BUT...most important thing abt health is..its not abt looking good but its abt feeling good.  Another important note is : when u HAVE TO...go ahead and indulge !!!

well i think its very important to eat healthy and im not just saying this cause im a diabetic.....

in islam we are told that one third of our stomach is for food, the other for water adn the other live it empty........ i ABUSE the one third for food, i should do better

as for marriage and stuff, i would preferably like a somewhat firm bod but hey thats not what we're workign for in this dunya right?

anyway isnt the rule after marriage to gain 20 lbs or so :)

Theres a difference between staying fit and being on a sensible diet which contains enough nutrients. A person can be fit by excercising but won't remove those tyres around the stomach, to remove those tyres round the stomach it goes hand in hand for eating sensible low fat food and keeping firm by excercising.

Your breakfast is that one item per day or is that whole list for 7 days ?
Breakfast is when your most hungry as your body has just woken up from sleep. So I don't think so this would be very filling, but then it also depends upon your intake of milk.

My breakfast usually is:
Bran Flakes or high fibre cereal, with chopped bannans, sprinkled with some organic honey, followed by two slightly buttered toasts and 2-3 biscuits.

Mid morning/afternoon snacks, No M&M's only fruit. roughly five items of fruit and a handful of raisins, apricots or nuts. Drink 200 mls of spring water or mineral water.

Lunch:
Tuna sandwiches, rice, fish or a big bowl of pasta/spaghetti. Pasta will be of many sorts such as Italian,  Far East. Spaghetti is thai.
Consume 500ml of milk at the same time.

Evening Meal:
Must be something light, whether its a curry or usually something bland like vegetable soup. I tend to have no more than 3 slices of bread or roti with the evening meal and try and eat b4 at least 2 hours b4 I go to sleep.

Before sleep:
250 or 500 ml of milk. Depending on whether I went to the gym or not.

Asalaamu Alaikum ;-)

Bro Hanif, I can see you've got the fitness bug bad huh? ;)

I've also cut back on the ole Bebzi and tend to drink Diet stuff more. Also since I got married I've cut down on the amount of sugur I take in my tea.

My top tip for keeping healthy from my experience though, is too eat more vegetables and less meat.

I thought this only applied to sisters? ;)

Healthy diet and plenty of excersice.  Actually I'm trying to put on about 25 pounds (of muscle).  Ultimately I'd like to be 235.  I want to compete as a heavy weight in martial arts and at 210 I'm giving up some size.

BroHanif

My list is each item per day :) Yes, keeping fit entailed exercise and I was on that diet plus clocking 6hours at the gym per week.  I agree that breakfast is an important meal so I eat but I do not eat much.  Its called breaking fast and one should be conservative when one awakens one's sleeping stomache.

My diet is based on calorie counts and nutritional value.  Since we spend most of our time sitting down at work, we have to cut down on bad calories.

Right.  As for piling on the lbs after marriage...emm..just say :My wife/hubby takes good care of me, Alhamdulillah".  Heh.

Wassalam.

Asalamu Alykum,
I think bros are lucky they eat sooooooooooo much and don't really gain too much. I mean ~ahem~ if eating three slices of bread or roti is considered a mere light meal.. I don't wanna know what an heavy meal constitutes of... Plus when sisters gain its very proportional unlike bros
;) :-)

Weight gain after marriage is common. The average man gains 19.4 pounds after 10 years of marriage, and the average woman gains 24.7 pounds.

I think it's important that the husband and also the wife tries to stay fit and watches out what they eat after marriage. Islam doesn't say that we have to keep in shape all our lives, but it does recommend that we take care of ourselves, eat healthy, get enough sleep, exercise, and just be a healthy person.
Sometimes we indulge, but we have to learn to balance.  If you eat meat, balance it with veggies, and stuff like that.
As long as we're healthy, I don't think a couple pounds matter after marriage, Alhamdulillah.
