Inshallah, I am trying to get the motivation to start exercising more and to become more healthier.   ;D
I read the post about Tae-Bo and was wondering what does that involve?  I want to do something which would help me lose weight not put on muscles.
And i wouldn't mind doing some martial art type thing so i can learn some self - defense at the same time  :D
So let me know what u do to keep urself fit n healthy and any advice would be appreciated.

Take into consideration there is not much space in my room and my video player is not working at the moment.
And hopefully my finger wont be clicking too much towards the International House of Kabob where a certain number of CHOCOLATE recipes have appeared courtesy of Umm Muffin ;)

Inshallah will have a go at those...for everybody else in the household of course  :D

:-/I just joined a gym!

::)My son takes martial arts classes. For the past three years all the moms got together and chatted twice a week while our kids are "hi yahing"

:-[ There is a gym connected to the school. I talked many of the moms into excersizing while the kids are in class.

:oThis is the second month and I already see results.

I'm not a sister, but I'll answer.  I jog and lift weights on M/W/F and hit the heavy bag M/T/TH.  As soon as I can jog 2 1/2 miles with out any expense than I'll begin Martial Arts/Full Contact Combat training.  Combination of Muh Thai Kick Boxing, Filipino Martial Arts and Brazillian Ju-jitsu.  Also it's not cheap, so I may make that 2 1/2 miles before I'm ready financially.

[color=Teal] [slm] Sister,

Why not start by walking?  It really is an easy way to get in shape and if you find someone to walk with it can actually be quite enjoyable.  Just make sure that you swing those arms and work on increasing your pace.   :-*

[slm],
For the past year and a half,I have been running on and off and doing some aerobics.I usually work out atleast twice a week;mostly running and pushups & situps. Although ,I havent been losing any weight, but I have noticed a BIG difference in the firmness of my skin, Alhamdulillah. 8) I used to do toning exercises and weights but then I stopped since I was starting to get big and I didnt want that.  ;D
As Marcie said, walking is a good start and ofcourse u r gonna start slow, but to all my sisters,IT IS a good thing to be active;I mean try to jog or run as much as u can.Even if its once a week. The way I look at it is that Allah gave us our bodies as amanah, and it depends on us how to take care of this amanah. :-)
I was also wondering if someoe has a problem of unhealthy bones. Like, Alhamdulillah I have never broken any bones but unless I carefully select my running shoes.or run on my toes, I get real bad shin splits. And its jsut not me;it runs in the family like my bro and mom have similiar problems.  :(  I have kinda learnt to live with it but with me being not even 22 yet,and alread my shins hurting if I sit on the floor for a longer period of time, kinda scares me since my grandparents have arthritis. Do u guys think ,there is anything to worry about or its just me making a big deal out of it??? :-/
I would be looking forward to any replies,

Ever since I started university, most of my exercise comes from running around campus to try to get to all my classes on time. ;D

When I have time, I like to go skating at the local skating rink in the winter.  I also like skiing.  There's some ski hills about an hour to an hour and a half away from where I live.

In the summer, I sometimes go biking.  The trick with that is not to bike to the nearest ice cream store. :-/

I have a friend who does karate.  She got her black belt a few months ago.  Better not mess with her!!! ;)

Asalamau Alykum,

yeah i hear ya!!! I have been trying to stick to my salads and soups buttt what can I say i have sweeth tooth..  :-X  Ever since college started, I have become a lil inactive... But its like whole winter thing as well, in summer everyone is more active.. Also, its a matter of getting in a routine, once you start working out you stick to it.. well most of the time.. I use to kickbox but had to quit cause a guy joined our class  >:( ... It was an awesome workout and I learned self defense..My advice would be don't eat heavy meals at night, and stick to a routine. The first month will be very hard but after that you'll get use to it...

Waslamu Alykum :)

It is hard to keep up with a routine sometimes b/c we're so busy, but InshaAllah I made a goal for myself...I'm going to exercise more regularly.  I bought the Tae-Bo set and did it for quite a while, but b/c i started college, i sort of slacked off  ::)
Now, since the spring is approaching, InshaAllah i think i'll try walking or more outdoor sports  :)
Do u sisters have any plans for the spring/summer??? Like exercise wise, b/c i need ideas of what i can do  ;D

since i've been at uni the last 3 years i had to abandon my 30 mins of aerobics every night.  now my exercise consists of running up and down four flights of stairs (*phew* help !!!  :'( ) , walking briskly for about 20 mins every day, and running for the bus.  inshallah when i finish my degree i'll have the time to go back to aerobics  :)  strangely enough  :( i used to do them about 1 hour before i went to bed - it was actually very relaxing.

Alhamdulilah, one of my roomates has an elliptical runner, so last term i tried to work out every other day, and then on the off days i would try and do floor work, like sit ups, push ups, leg raises, the funny butt exercises.  This lasted until about 3 weeks before finals, hehe.  i would work out before i went to bed and either get in my tv time while i was elliptically running or go through some notecards.  So inshallah next year when i move, i really want to try and get one for myself.

We learned in class that to really lose weight you have to work out 4 days a week for at least 40 mins at a time. and you shouldn't let more than 48 hours go in between workouts.

I also heard on Oprah that if you don't eat anything before you go to sleep you will lose weight.  For example, she stopped eating at 7pm and prolly went to bed around 12.  I think she lost like 10 pounds.  I tried doing that too this past term (sad how time becomes in relation to school), and i think it really helps. So no more midnight snacks!!

Jazak Allah Khair for all those who have replied...

Inshallah i'll be taking up a few of those pointers.... ;D

I do some walking.....(if u count walking to and from the bus stop to my college....actually i should say walking briskly because i tend to be running late most of the time  :D so i'm always out of breath when i reach my lectures...but thats good isn't it  ;))

Hopefully i'll break my bad habit and not alwayz take the lift and instead try the stairs....did this once and couldn't feel my legs by the time i got to the 8th floor  ::) so now i go half way so i'm slowly getting there...

My question before i started babbling was what exactly does Tae Bo involve? Is it good for all-round exercise or does it concentrate on certain parts of the body?

Okay gotta jet...or should i say 'Gotta exercise'  :-/

Take care inshallah

Hi saffiyeh,

tae-bo is an all-around cardio workout.  It will burn fat all over your body and primarily work your quads, abs, and arms as well.  The abs really get a going over because they are used as stabilizers in this sort of exercise and should always be tight while you are kicking or punching.

Also, there are several different tae-bo videos available.  I would recommend starting with the 30 minutes (and also the instrucitonal) and moving from there.

If you can't dp a video for whatever reason, there are other options.  On the cheap you can fast dance in your apartment, or buy a jump rope and do that.  If you have access to a staircase, walk/jog up and down that.  Also, it might not be a bad idea to invest in some free weights or resistance bands.  The more muscle you have the more calories your body will burn all the time, and the higher your metabolism will be.  Also, it's *really* difficult for women to bulk up just by doing free weights a couple of times a week, so don't worry about that.

Hope it helps,

Sparrow

Ya gotta eat right to stay fit to sooooooooo    :-[

Who was it that did a joke post about Chocolate on the old board?

About Chocolate, Is a heath food, has milk in it and chocolate comes from a cocoa beans ...   thus bean = veggie   :-/

If you eat a chocolate bar before meals you are less hungry and therefore eat less at meals   :-/

Caleries are afraid of heights so keep chocolate on top of the fridge or in a high cabnit   :-/

:D Who did that one  :D
