As salaamu alaikum br. Talib,

Masha'Allah you're stuff is sooo cool.   8)

What writing instrument to you use?  I know that there are special brushes and pens but have no idea where to get them here in NY.  I'm just an amateur and I've been using two pencils rubber banded together to get the thick line and thickness variation while writing.  I can't find anything else that works.   :'(

Any suggestions?

Wa alaikum as salaam,

Well... I have all the instruments I need... I also have two original hand-cut rod pens. You're right I couldn't get any here in NY. That's why whenever I go back to my Family (in UAE) I return loaded with Calligraphy pens.... Maybe I can send you one or two if you like... I'm not as  (Jannah) said --> "[glow=red,2,300]Talib is a great calligraphist ma'shallah[/glow]", but I'm still trying... aaight...

The deal for the pens goes for the other members too...  ;)

Wassalaaaaam...

[slm] Br. 'Uthmaan....

Well, InshaAllah I might show you how to do the Head-cover in the style you like... Maybe, I can add another link with pictures about how to do it.. Although, it is still very hard to get it right from the first time... If you can somehow send me that clip when they "Camera-ed" you it'll be funny... :-/ Khair...

Few updates on my web-site. First a new link is added under the name INNER VIEWS (http://www.angelfire.com/ns/talib/articles.html) and two more suplications "Dua'a" were added to the FORTIFICATION OF THE MUSLIM section (http://www.angelfire.com/ns/talib/Thikr.html)... May Allah give us the strength to continue into the right path.. Ameen..

[slm] To all...

Few weeks ago, someone had asked me few questions about my history with Calligraphy... It'll be very nice if I can share it with you guys... Your feedback are important and feel free to ask any question....

Q's and A's:

Q1: What was the process of learning how to do Arabic Calligraphy? What steps were taken and how long did it take? If you had a teacher/mentor, please include how Calligraphy was taught and explain your learning experience.

A1: The process of learning calligraphy was long time ago. It started once I was in 2nd grade. My teacher realized that I write better than the others, so he recommended that I enter the writing contest to my dad. Nothing happened at that level. But in the Summer, I used to bring a copy of the Holy Qur'an and start copying it exactly. Of course I didn't have the right instruments but a regular pencil. So, I tried to make that edge to it (All the calligraphy pens are cut in an edge such as a highlight marker). My parents realized that I was going "crazy" about this so they enrolled me in a Summer activity program (I was in 4th grade). Since then, I was doing calligraphy. Of course at the beginning, I couldn't handle the Calligraphy pen. Especially doing the dots (diamond-like structure). As it was going year by year, our teacher decided that we should move to another style of writing that is not to use these commercial pens but to use the Original ROD pens with a home-made ink.
Q2: What kind of tools and materials do you use?  Where do you get these materials?

A2: The tools varied throughout the learning process. At first, we used pre-cut commercial pens sold at any bookstore. Later, as we excelled using them, we started using pens made of ROD. Our teacher brought them from Indonesia. They are very tough and last almost for ever. Then, he provides us with the ink too. This isn't regular ink. It was homemade ink, which was very dark and stable. On the ink container he inserted a pure threads of SILK. The purpose of the silk is to stabilize the color of the ink and not to fade away in the long term.
Q3: What kind of measuring system is involved in Arabic Calligraphy?

A3: The measuring system in the Arabic Calligraphy is the use of DOTS. Letter can't just be written randomly. For example, the Alif is 5 dots long. If it accedes this then it'll be an ALIF for a different font style. Another example is the Ba'a, the Ba'a should start 1DOT high from the line and ends the same way i.e. it isn't touching the line perfectly.
Q4:  What kind of relationship do you feel with God while doing Calligraphy? (i.e., what kind of spiritual satisfaction is received)?

A4: Tough question... The answer might vary from person to person.  Unfortunately, nowadays people have lost that connection with writing calligraphy artwork. As for me, it is very meaningful. Specially when writing a verse from the Holy Qur’an or a hadith. I feel like someone is watching me so I should perfect that piece.
Q5: Islamic Calligraphy is a sacred art for Muslims' and is on the top level of the Islamic Art Hierarchy.  From a calligraphers point of view, why is Calligraphy a sacred art and of utmost importance in the hierarchy of Islamic Arts?

A5: Good question…Well, calligraphy is not sacred as the word indicates. Because, in the time of Prophet Mohammad (Peace Be Upon Him) it wasn’t more than a regular communication method. But now, after we have all this different types of styles it becomes an art. For this reason, I don’t think anyone have thought that Arabic Calligraphy is sacred. It is highly respected as an art but not sacred.
Q6:What were the names of the schools you went to?

A6: I went only to one place called The Cultural Foundation.
Q7:You didn't really describe your personal experience while doing calligraphy with Allah...do you feel as if you're doing an act of worship in itself? Do you feel at peace? Serene? Calm? Do you feel like you're spiritually uplifted?!

A7: NO. It doesn’t feel that it is WORSHIP. It only feels that way if the purpose of the artwork is to establish something Islamic. Otherwise, it is a regular writing for me. Yes, I do feel calm and so attached when I write calligraphy since it is my field. As some people enjoy poetry and cooking, I enjoy watching and writing calligraphy.. I can TASTE it.
Q8:My Islamic professor believes Islamic art is sacred, and he's very persistent about that, so I kind of need a better answer towards that last question?

A8:As I said before, what does sacred mean. Just because we write the Holy Qura’an in Arabic doesn’t mean it is sacred (Calligraphy). My point is, people make all kind of assumptions about things they heard supported by “Fake” of “self” arguments. If he said it is sacred, then let him explain why?
Q9:Could you describe the paper used in calligraphy and how is the paper and ink made, if you know?

A9:Well, the original paper used to be maid from EGG WHITE. It takes about a year for one sheet to be made and used. This Paper is so unique. You can write with it, and at another point of time you can easily erase the content with only one drop of filtered water!. Since it is hard to make it, we used another type of paper. I don’t know what do they call it here but it is very shiny and mostly used in expensive texts.
Q10: What style of calligraphy do you do? And why did you choose to do that one instead of the others?

A10: I know the following styles: Naskh, Diwanee, Jali Diwanee, and Kufi. I started with Naskh since it is the one used in the Quranic Text (very common). Then after I got it, Diwani looked very awesome and the Jali Diwani too. Turks developed these last two styles.
Q11:Can you just explain more how the teacher taught you guys? Did you guys first start off with the alphabet?! How many times did you have to write one letter in order to get it right? (I heard you have to write it a billion times) talk about the steps taken...what was taught first, then what was the next step, then what, etc.

A11: Of course, as a naďve observer, we started with the Alphabet, and then with how would two letters get attached then sentences. Repetition time differ from student to another. As a talented student I almost got it from the 3rd shot. But I didn’t excel it. For some others, it took longer. But the more practice the more we learn. So, first the single letters then two letter attached (a word of two letters) then random words (more than two letters) and sentences.
Q12: What ayah or saying do you love the most to do your Arabic calligraphy on?

A12: Taught one. I do all sort of Ayat. I like few of them the most

o      “It is only those who have knowledge among His slaves that fear Allâh” 35:28
o      “And your Lord is not unaware of what you do” 27:93

that's so cool talib^2   8)  i never realized how much of a real history khat has. it has a loooong and well established history. even schools of thought of khat and stuff ;) i remember this one girl in damascus in our khat class... she was japanese and learned arabic calligraphy on her own from books for 5 years!!! and her khat was amazing --i don't even think she was muslim!

it does take some original artistic talent though...like a friend of mind who does a lot of art picked up everything so quickly and was doing pieces while we were still on  alif, alif, alif, ba, ba, ba ..... :)

Very nice work masha Allah. A question to everyone a little off topic though. Anyone knows any good Unicode encoded true type arabic fonts. I have Arial Unicode MS, Arabic tradional and Arabic transparent. Does any one know about any other fonts available. I would prefer a free license with no strings attached. Your help is appreciated. Jazak Allah.
