[slm] :-)'s-- what would be cooler to wear for a person who's always hot- a jilbab or abaya ??? And what type of material would you recommend? I live in the middle of the US, and in summers the humidity is as high as the temp. In the winter I seldom even wear a sweater, so I need hints for coolness. Also, (I hope this isn't TOO silly to ask :o), what to wear underneath, - regular clothes? [wlm] :-) Laila |

well laila, this reply is just for you. why are u wanting to be more COOL? like why do u have 2 ask which is cooler. well islamicly i wear a abaya and it opens when i walk so i walk lightly, jilbab is VERY Hot when your outside so thats a hard choice. I would prefer a buttoned up abaya or even if its open don't walk big steps to let it open. there is no cool warmer hotter or colder. there is normaly islamicly kind, dark colour sis, nothing yellow, red, orange, blue, (navy is ok), and other hot colour such as pink and blue. laila you sound as if you want to please everyone who sees you. please allah sista, please allah! allah is the one who is asking to be pleased. you can't please everyone.to answer your question abaya is more cool but it depends if the jilbab is modern or cool. so its up 2 u ~sista~! |

[slm] ummm..Baraa i think she is talking about temperature? thanks for the laugh though your answer had me rolling :-/ :-/ Anywho, (where's Hajreee by the way:) ), i think abayas work a little better for coolness (of temperature ;) ) cuz they normally are "bigger" cut, and the material is softer...and they have these new abayas where they use velcro on the top (both sides) to connect...so basically you won't have to worry about it opening up in the front...pretty sleek :) Also, you can get jilbabs that are softer tones, like pastels and greys...black absorbs mad heat....yeah, you can wear regular clothes, but you can pretty much wear anything light on the inside to keep generally cool.... I hope this helps :):):) Maliha :-) [wlm] |

[color=Teal] [slm] [quote] Could u explain to me what is the difference between the jilbab and the abaya. I alwayz thought they were the same thing[/quote] Me too! ??? Before you buy check out the material. You want something that is going to allow your skin to breath. As for what to wear underneath. Well I say shorts and a t-shirt are just fine. :-[ [wlm] Marcie :-) [/color] |

[slm] Jilbab = one with the buttons going all the way down...kinda like a coat... Abaya= no buttons...you put it on, and sometimes you have two strings hold it together, velcro (the newer ones)...older versions you pretty much had to hold...inconvenient:) I think i got em right :-X Maliha :-) [wlm] |

[slm] Thank you Maliha and others for the info! I don't know much about fabrics as I don't sew. And as far as being "cool"- I'm too old (as my sons tell me ::)). And I don't wear shorts in the hottest weather, and haven't for eons :o, even before becoming Muslim! Is gabardine a heavy fabric-I see it used for jilbabs on some sites. [wlm] :-) Laila |

Salaam! You know how people living in desert regions always tend to wear something light colored, long and flowing? I realized after trying it (after wearing "western" clothing for years), that it's sooooo much cooler! These people know how to keep cool; they have to! One thing is, your skin is being shaded from the sun underneath your clothing, and the other is that the "loose"-ness creates this almost, "air-conditioning" effect. I'm not kidding! Just be sure to wear natural fibers (cotton, linen, etc) or blends, rather than synthetics when it's particularly hot, because layering and fabrics make all of the difference! Hope that helps |

Assalamu'alaikum :-) I live in a hot and humid country... and I know the feeling :). I usually choose light materials, for my jilbabs. Even light synthetic materials work for me. For me, most of my jilbabs are custom made, as I don't fit the one's in shops (too short for me). And I make them, like a dress sort of a thing, with buttons at the top. coz if it's done all the way down, some buttons usually get undone by itself. [quote]what to wear underneath, - regular clothes? [/quote] Yes.. you could do that.. Otherwise... underneath, I think my baju kurung bottom or just a long skirt would suffice, as wearing a T-shirt/ blouse brings unnecessary layers and heat, whereas my jilbab-dress and hijab performs the same function without it. A sleeveless long dress to be worn underneath is good too or even a nightie will do, especially if the material of the jilbab is thick. Well, that's what I do.. and I feel comfortable in these in the hot weather, alhamdulillah. Hope this helps, inshaALlah! Take care! :) |

[slm] My two favorite styles on Al-Hediyah.com are abayas- one is georgette ???, and the other is crepe(here I always thought a crepe was a french "pancake" :-[). My favorite jilbab on CaravanExpress is a cotton/poly- like some of my baggy blouses. Is crepe a gauzy material, and what is georgette like? (I always tell people I make a lot of trouble ;)!
