:DYour period comes once a month.

:-/Some girls get their period as early as age 10 and as late as 17.

;)A sign that your period is soon to come is after you get hairs in your lower private area.

8)Usually you get a little stomache- except it is just above your private area , right before it comes.

:-*Nothing to be scared- it does not hurt like a cut.

:-XJust take your mom aside and tell her your menses has started- she will take care of the rest for you.

???If you are uncomfortable- ask an older sister or aunt or grandmother.

As for pads and light days- just keep them in your underwear drawer- use them when the time comes!

...or just e-mail me!

:-)

hey sister, don't be scared!! It's not scary at all!! It's just a really really slow trickle of blood... there's no big gush or anything :)
So calm down, you'll be fine, Insha Allah :)

I got my period at 13. I told my sister and she told my mother. It was really no big deal. Your mother and sisters know all about it, so they won't be surprised when you get yours.

When it starts it may last for anything from 3 to 7 days. It's not very much blood at all.. :)

Wishing you well, Insha Allah. If you have any more questions then ask away okay?

I, too, started at 13, a year AFTER the sister who's younger than me did. Mother gave her a little pink booklet , so I got to read it with her. Are there any other "older" ;) American muslimahs who remember the little plastic panties that you hooked the pads to-  8) (NOT!)
The best part is- GETTING OLD ENOUGH TO STOP :) ;)!

ok I'll try   ;D

Barraa, the time when you get hair in lower private place and get your period is called puberty. Your body will go through changes as your body starts to  become able to have children (after you get married)

Menopause, happens to a woman around 45 to 55 years old ( you know when they are oooold   :P   )  but some start a little earlier and others later. There are more changes in your body, which can cause your face to become flush, redish and feel hot.  (hot flashes) Kind of like the feeling you get in your face when you are embarrassed and blush.  >>>see>>>    >:(

Anyway during this time the body stops having a period.
Just all part of life. When this happens all the OLD ladies can
sit on the porch and have a >>> []

Here's an article about Menopause that i got off of webmd.com, I hope it clears things up :)  If there's anything in there that may be offensive, i apologize in advance.

Your Guide to Menopause

Menopause is the end of a woman's menstrual cycle and fertility and is a normal condition that all women experience as they age. It occurs when the ovaries limit the production of estrogen and progesterone, two necessary hormones for a woman's reproductive cycle to function.

Though it naturally occurs with age, menopause may also come on suddenly as a result of a surgical procedure, treatment of a disease, or illness. In these cases it is referred to as induced menopause.

When Do Women Usually Enter Menopause?

When menopause occurs naturally, it tends to take place anywhere between the ages of 48 and 52, but it can occur as early as your late 30s, or as late as your mid-50s. When menopause occurs before 35, it is considered premature menopause, but just as menarche is genetically predetermined, so is menopause.

What Are the Symptoms of Menopause?

For approximately half of women who enter menopause, their menstrual cycle becomes irregular and then stops, and they don't have any other symptoms. But, for others, the decreasing levels of estrogen associated with menopause may cause more distressing symptoms that include:

Irregular periods or no periods at all
Mood swings
Decreased sex drive
Hot flashes
Sweating
Racing heart (palpitations)
Headaches
Vaginal dryness and soreness
Trouble sleeping
Bone thinning (osteoporosis)
These symptoms can last from a few months to up to 10 years.

What Are the Stages of Menopause?

Menopause is a gradual process. The events preceding and following menopause amount to a huge change for women both physically and socially. Physically, this process has four stages:

Premenopause Although some doctors may refer to a 32 year-old woman in her childbearing years as premenopausal, this is not really an appropriate label. The term premenopause ideally refers to women on the cusp of menopause. Their periods have just started to get irregular, but they do not yet experience any classic menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes or vaginal dryness. A woman in premenopause is usually in her mid-to-late 40s. If your doctor tells you that you're premenopausal, you might want to ask him or her how he or she is using this term.

Perimenopause This term refers to women who are in the thick of menopause. Their cycles may be erratic, and they are experiencing hot flashes and vaginal dryness. This label is applicable for about four years, covering the first two years prior to the official "last" period to the next 2 years following the last menstrual period. On average, women are about 51 when they hit the perimenopause stage.

Menopause This refers to your final menstrual period. You will not be able to pinpoint your final period until you've been completely free from periods for one year. Then, you count back to the last period you charted, and that date is the date of your menopause. Note: After more than one year of no menstrual periods, any vaginal bleeding is now considered abnormal.

Postmenopausal This term refers to the last third of most women's lives, ranging from women who have been free of menstrual periods for at least one year to women celebrating their 100th birthday. In other words, once you're past menopause, you'll be referred to as postmenopausal for the rest of your life.

How Do I Know I Am Going Through Menopause?

When you begin to notice the signs of menopause, either you'll suspect the approach of menopause on your own, or your doctor will put two and two together when you report your symptoms. Two very simple tests can accurately determine what's going on and what stage of menopause you're in. Your follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) levels will dramatically rise as your ovaries begin to shut down; these levels are easily checked through one blood test.

In addition, your vaginal walls will thin, and the cells lining the vagina will not contain as much estrogen. Your doctor will simply take a Pap-like smear from your vaginal walls -- simple and painless -- and analyze the smear to check for vaginal "atrophy," the thinning and drying out of your vagina. It helps if you keep track of your periods and chart them as they become irregular. Your menstrual pattern will be an added clue to your doctor about whether you are pre- or perimenopausal.

Are There Any Treatments to Help Alleviate the Symptoms of Menopause?

There are a number of different treatment options to consider.

Over-the-counter medication: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) include the common painkillers aspirin and ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) among many others, and they may be sufficient for relief of menopausal symptoms. Taking aspirin or any NSAID on a regular basis can increase the risk for gastrointestinal bleeding, and therefore any decision to take such medications regularly should be discussed with your doctor.

For vaginal dryness, moisturizers and nonestrogen lubricants such as KY Jelly, Replens, and Astroglide are available. (Frequent sexual activity helps preserve the lining of the vagina and maintain an acidic environment to protect against infection.) Vitamin E supplements may help women with hot flashes.

Prescription medication: Treatment with estrogen and progesterone, called hormone replacement therapy, is commonly prescribed to reduce the effects of menopause and help prevent osteoporosis. If you are unable or do not want to take hormones, there are other medications that your doctor can prescribe to alleviate the symptoms of menopause.

Oral hormonal medications and skin patches are effective in reducing some menopausal symptoms.
A combination of estrogen plus testosterone appears to alleviate intense hot flashes that accompany surgical menopause better than estrogen alone.
Estrogen creams, rings, or vaginal tablets restore vaginal elasticity and lubrication and improve sexual pleasure.
Progesterone creams or progestin intrauterine devices (IUDs) are showing promise for reducing menopausal symptoms.
Nontraditional therapies: There are many unproved methods for alleviating menopausal symptoms, some more effective than others. Acupuncture, meditation, and relaxation techniques are all harmless ways to reduce the stress of menopause, and some people report great benefit from these practices. Many women also try herbal, or so-called natural remedies, like Remifemin, dong quai, and ginseng. Talk to your doctor before taking any of these therapies.

What Are the Pros and Cons of Hormone Replacement Therapy?

Pros:

Protects against heart disease
Helps maintain good cholesterol levels
Prevents too much bone loss that can lead to osteoporosis
Relieves symptoms of menopause
Cons:

May cause bleeding similar to menstruation
Increases the risk of endometrial cancer
May increase the risk of breast cancer
You should talk to your doctor about the pros and cons of hormone treatment to determine if it is right for you.

[slm] little sis,

ok well here's the deal. every woman in the world gets their period, EVERY month... so it's like not a secret :) you can ask anyone , your older friends, your sister, your mom.. everyone knows!!!!! ;)

ok so the main islamic things to know about your period is that during it, you cannot pray or fast, (you don't have to make up prayers, but if it's ramadan you have to make up those fasting days later), you can't touch an all arabic quran (according to most scholars unless you have a reason ie teaching), you can't have marital relations and when it's done you have to take a special shower called ghusl.

Here's a site with some good info for you:
http://www.kotex.com/talk/teen/help/

Top Questions:
  1.  Most girls get there first period between the ages of 11 and 15, but it is not abnormal to be as old as 18 or as young as 10.
  2. For the first few years most girls have irregular periods; it is not unusual to miss your period for months at a time or to have 2 periods very close together.
  3. Periods work on 28 day cycles, this means you can expect 13 periods in a year.
  4. PMS is not a myth but it has been exaggerated. It is more physical than emotional and includes things like; bloating, cramping, water retention, elevated body temperature, and skin break outs.
  5. It is possible, although highly unlikely, to get pregnant if you have unprotected sex during your period.
  6. Cramps our real and for some girls they are severe enough to warrant missing school or other activities; Ibuprofen (Advil®), Acetaminophen (Tylenol®), Naproxen Sodium (Aleve®) or Motrin® can help ease the pain.
  7. Birth control killed can ease severe cramps and make irregular periods regular.
  8. Using tampons does not mean you are no longer a virgin.
  9. Tampons should not be left in for more than 8 hours; extended use can cause the disease called "Toxic Shock Syndrom" (TSS).
 10. A period is part of the regular fertility cycle in females; it is merely the expulsion of an unfertilized egg along with uterine wall tissue and blood. Although it seems as if you lose a lot of blood you really only lose between 4 - 6 tablespoons, the rest is tissue and water.

Something I'd like to mention about #9 in Jannah's post.
Now those of you who knew better please don't laugh at me.

I had always assumed they were sterile. I mean, well think about it,  the cotton pads that come in boxes to wrap or cover wounds are,                     so I just assumed something like tampons would be.

It was only in the last 5 or 6 yrs I actually read the box,
I even called the 1-800 on the box.
They confirmed, these things are not sterile.

ok ok maybe I am goofy or niave, but I had ahways assumed they were.  ::)

Toxic Shock Syndrome and Tampons

WHAT IS TOXIC SHOCK SYNDROME (TSS)?
TSS is a rare bacteria-caused illness occurring mostly in menstruating women who use high absorbency tampons. Non-menstrual TSS risk is increased for women who use vaginal barrier, contraceptive methods, although the incidence is much lower.

WHAT CAUSES TSS?
The main cause of TSS is a certain strain of staph, the bacterium Staphylococcus Aureus. Hyperabsorbent tampons may facilitate the infection because their prolonged intra-vaginal use enhances the bacterial growth.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?
Symptoms of TSS occur suddenly: a high fever (102° F, 38.8° C or higher), vomiting, diarrhea, a sunburn-like rash, red eyes, dizziness, lightheadedness, muscle aches, and drops in blood pressure, which may cause fainting. The infection can cause shock, kidney and liver failure. These symptoms require prompt medical evaluation.

HOW IS IT TREATED?
If TSS is suspected, hospitalization is recommended. Intravenous fluids and antibiotics will be administered.

CAN IT BE PREVENTED?
You can reduce the risk of TSS by alternating your tampon or internally worn products with pads. Use a tampon with the minimum absorbency needed to control your flow. Review the information on absorbency of your tampon brand. Change the tampon or internally worn product as directed. If you have ever been diagnosed with TSS, you should not use tampons.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I SUSPECT TSS?
At the first sign of a fever or rash, remove tampon immediately, as this may help prevent your symptoms from worsening. Seek medical care immediately.

Tampons are inner cavity (vagina) protection and pads are liners for the crotch of your underpants.

Every box of tampons has easy instructions.
