[slm] I like blue topaz. The yellow ones are my birthstone, but I don't care for them at all. I also like rubies. I will have to tell my as yet imaginary husband not to buy me diamonds, though -- I've never liked them, but I'm not really sure why. [wlm] |

Opals, Opals, Opals!!! I just love them, especially the ones which are darker with lots of greens and reds and blues in them. Do they really qualify as gems though? I don't know. But it doesn't really matter. I still love 'em! :D |

I think maybe we might want to consider changing that to "Diamonds used to be a girl's best friend", at least until the industry gets a better handle on the source of these diamonds. It is a sad fact that far too many diamonds that are reaching world markets are funding civil wars and worse in Africa. There is a very timely article in this month's issue (March 2002) of National Geographic about diamonds: tracing their path from the mining of the raw gem to the finished product in a shop window. A portion of the article can be found here: http://magma.nationalgeographic.com/ngm/data/2002/03/01/html/ft_20020301.1.html I was shocked at how little control the industry actually has in sorting the diamonds according to their source. They claim that today, it is still nearly impossible to guarantee that a diamond is blood free. After I read the article, I am now glad that, as grad students, we couldn't afford a diamond engagement ring. I would recommend that everyone read this carefully before purchasing their next diamond. It just might be an eye-opener. Peace, Dawn |

As-salaamu 'alaikum, Gooooo, Dawn! I'm glad you brought this up. :) Here is another source regarding the whole diamond industry. Not that wedding rings are an Islamic tradition, but if you must, don't choose diamonds as stones, or any gems that are extracted and exploited, at the cost of the indigenous people it is taken from. Guess that goes for a lot of our "goods." Boycotting certain items goes a long way when done in a unified force! http://web.amnesty.org/diamonds/index.html The True Cost of Diamonds |
