Desi?

[slm]  my dear brothers and sisters!!!!  :) :)

I've noticed that a lot of people on this fabulous board  8) like using the word "Desi" ::).  I was just wondering what it means exactly  ???, is it referring to the indo/pak background or any particular background thats not "western" ????

Seriously though, it is a given that young people in non-muslim 'western'  societies find it hard balancing between the two cultures, caught between the culture of their parents and the one they grow up in.  We all know how hard it is being young and confused about growing up and coming to terms with your own identity.  I was just wondring if you are from a "desi" background, how did you  find the "balancing"?  What helped (or is helping) you become comfortable with who you are?

Just curious....

Desi is used for the indo/pak/bengali background.

Hmmm, I think that's why they call us ABCDs (American Born Confused Desi).   Its interesting talking to other desis (including the ones on this board).  They grew up with the same problems and concerns.  Sometimes we can sit back, sip a  [] and  :-/ about it.  :)

slm,

the word 'desi' comes from teh word 'des'... it literally means someone who is from the des... specifically the home country. so therefore anyone who is from your own home country would be a desi to you :)

however, nowadays the term has come to mean just someone from the subcontinent like arshad said (india/pakistan/bangladesh).

the 'balancing' formula is as follows:

pakistani + american + muslim = me ;)

i think islam is what really brings the two cultures together (for me, anyways). i mean, there are various aspects of western culture that i cant adapt to simply because my religion prohibits me from doing so. but same goes for pakistani culture...a lot of it is derived from hindu traditions, many of which have no place in my life. but its like give-and-take...you drop some of the not so beneficial aspects for the more useful ones, ie) id take pakistani food over american anyday, and yet i like the etiquette and mannerisms of american culture, which islamic principles also cohere with.

its kinda fun, being a woman of three worlds...the weird part is that when i am here (in america), i tend to think my real home is back in pakistan...the mothercountry and all...and when i go there (pakistan), i miss it here and think this is my real home. no wonder they call us confused  :P

what i really wanna know is what is it like being arabic...and can someone please teach me belly dancing?
