I'm compiling a list of islamic books, tapes, cds etc..to buy this year, insh'Allah.:-[ I need some suggestions.

I'm looking for material in the following areas:

-Purification of the Soul

-Da'wah

-Islamic psychology (if there are any books out there that deal with this topic).

-Sciences of the Qur'an(translations, commentaries, principles of tafseer,etc..the more complex and detailed the better)

They can be in english or arabic.

Jazakum Allahu kheyran.

wa alaykum as salaam wa rahmatAllah,

-Purification of the Soul
I second deen's recommendations.. but an absolute *must* is the book Purification of the Soul, a compilation of some works by Hanbali, Ibn Qayyim & Ghazali.

Hamza Yusuf's Purification of the Heart tape series is also awesome, mashaAllah (though a bit expensive).
-Da'wah
do you mean books *for* dawah, or books *on* dawah?

some good books for dawah:

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Islam - Yahiya Emerick
Towards Understanding Islam - Maududi
Islam: Religion of Life - Shalabi
Autobiography of Malcolm X as told to Alex Haley
-Islamic psychology
be careful with how you use this stuff ;)
Sciences of the Qur'an(translations, commentaries, principles of tafseer,etc..the more complex and detailed the better)
We have Ibn Kathir's abridged tafseer and it is awesome mA.

gotta bounce to class, will write more later inshaAllah :)

My kind of thread :)

Purification of the Soul

As people said, that black book with a waterfall picture "Purification of the Soul" is *good.*

Zayd Shaker has a tape series called "Purification of the Soul" which I heard is also good.

The various extracts from the Ihyaa' of Imam Ghazali that are coming out in English are almost all good for this topic.

Da'wah

"How to Tell Others about Islam" by Yahiya Emerick.

"Problems Faced by the Da'wah and the Daaiyah" by Fathi Yakan.

"Prioriites of the Islamic Movement in the Coming Phase" by Yusuf Qaradawi.

"Milestones" by Syed Qutb.

Islamic Psychology

Hmm.  Not my area :)  The only one that comes to mind with a similar topic is "Parenting in the West" by Rida Bashir.

Sciences of the Qur'an

Besides the various tafasir and translations of the Qur'an, these are good books about the Qur'an and its study:

"Ulum al-Qur'aan" by Ahmed von Denffer.

"Way to the Qur'an" by Khurram Murad.

Insha Allah I'll write more when I get some time.

Has anyone listened to this?  How is it compared to the Hamza Yusuf series?

One of the *absolute* awesomest, most inspiring, most motivating, most amazing speeches I've ever heard is Elements of Success by sh. Hamza Yusuf.  It's super super super recommended to the 949573342394038th power :)  It doesn't really fit into any of your categories, but your library would be incomplete without it :)

Another excellent book I'd recommend is the Tafseer of Surah al-Hujjurat by Abu Ameena Bilal Phillips.

more as I think of 'em inshaAllah..

wasalaam :-)

I read this one back in Egypt. It is a very good book, sort of a personal growth ala anthony robbins with an islamic twist. Shaikh Al-Ghazali had an amazing understanding of the human self mash'Allah! a critical thing for muslims, in particular daa'ees.

Another excellent book of his that i'm reading right now is "Turathuna Al-fikri fee Meezaani ash-Shar’ wal  ‘Aql" [our intellectual heritage on the scale of law and reason]. I *definitely* recommend this one!

One very good concise book is Patience and Gratitude by Imam ibn Qayyim al Jawziyyah.  It is an abridged translation of `Uddat as Sabireen wa Dhakirat ash Shakireen. Its more of Tazkiyatun Nafs, TaHa Publishers has classified it under Islaamic Psychology Series. I believe there are goin to release more under this series.

Science of the Qur'an - Usool at Tafseer by Abu Ameenah Bilal Philips (Dar al Fatah Publishers) and one by Ahmad von Denfer, I can't remember the title though.

Ibn Katheers Tafseer is good for the home but I dont know if it would be a good idea for a library.

How to Approach and Understand the Qur'an - Jamaal al Din Zarabozo (Al-Basheer Publications and Translations)

Dawah / Islaamic Revivalism -

A brilliant book is "In Pursuit of Allah's Pleasure" written by Dr Naahah Ibrahim, Asim Abdul Maajid & Esaam-ud-Deen Darbaalah in Liman Turrah Prison. (Al-Firdous Ltd, London). This book must be studied and followed.

Social Justice in Islam by Sayyid Qutb (Islamic Book Trust, Kuala Lumpur)

Islam at Crossroads by Muhammad Asad (cant remember the publishers, sorry)

Hassan al Banna - Vision & Mission by Dr Thameem Usama (AS Noordeen Publishers)

For a lil deeper reading - The Reconstruction of Religious Thought In Islam by Muhammad Iqbal (Adam Publishers and Distributors, India)

more when it hits me and when i sort out my library inshaa'Allah.

I would like to remind myself and everyone on this board that there is *no* man or woman who ever lived on this earth who was free from making mistakes, except the anbiyaa [Prophets] of Allah.  Even the best of our scholars, Abu Hanifah, Malik, Shaafi'ee, Ahmad (rahimahum Allah) made mistakes.  Even the best of our mujaddideen, Ibn Taymiyyah, Ibn al-Qayyim, Abu Hamid al-Ghazali (rahimahum Allah) made mistakes.  Indeed, even the Sahaabah (radiAllahu anhum) of Rasulillah [saw] made many mistakes!

Remember when Usamah ibn Zayd (r.a.) killed a man during jihaad right after he pronounced the shahaadah?  Remember what the Prophet [saw] told Usamah after he heard what he had done?  "What will you do, O Usamah, when Laa ilaha Illaa Allah comes between you and Paradise on the Day of Judgment?"  When Usamah asked him (pbuh) to ask for his forgiveness, the Prophet (pbuh) merely repeated his statement.

Usamah (r.a.) said, according to some narrations, that he wished he had just accepted Islam that day!  Because conversion to Islam erases all of one's previous sins.

This was Usamah ibn Zayd (r.a.), the beloved of the Prophet (pbuh), a member of his blessed household, *the* house of ilm!

Indeed no one is free of mistakes, except the Prophet [saw] himself.

Furthermore, I would like to remind everyone and myself that the flesh of the scholars is poisoned.  And I seek refuge from Allah (swt) that I speak bad about them behind their back, and in doing so only kill my own qalb [heart].

I ask Allah (swt) to forgive the mistakes of the people of knowledge of our times and of the old times, and to shower His Mercy upon them, and to guide them if they are still alive.

Ameen.

Wassalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah.

The above posts were deleted.  As far as I could tell they are the same arguments going around the net slandering a single person. As that person is not here to defend themself, it is not fair for us to discuss things we have heard only second hand and from the western media itself.

Do you think that their goal is NOT to discredit this person in the eyes of all Muslims? Think about it. Why all the media attention, why the cut scenes on television trying to show support for certain things, why all the interviews.. and why did the media turn ugly after awhile accusing this person of being anti-american and saying terrorist things etc. This is a pattern and they were extremely smart in doing it.

And the worse thing is that it seems we are letting them do it forgetting every lesson the Quran every taught us. Remember the story of Sulaiman and the two men with sheep.  It is against Islamic law to make a judgement without the two sides, yet we do it.  AND worse this judgement is made by people who are NOT scholars themselves.  I received a similar email like the above posts that  so-and-so said such-and-such can you believe that.. what a kaffir etc!!!  and you know what,  the person in the email had no idea what they were talking about... the above concepts are KNOWN in islam, albeit to scholars, not to laypeople. They only way I knew was because we had been doing an in-depth study of it at the time.

Anyway please, please do not post such stuff in a public forum. You WILL be asked about it as we will be. You may want to take the chance, but do it elsewhere then.

049.006 O ye who believe! If a wicked person comes to you with any news, ascertain the truth, lest ye harm people unwittingly, and afterwards become full of repentance for what ye have done.
