oh *smile* But then does the issue of it having alcohol content matter? Because it isn't going to be consumed. |

[slm] With the limited knowledge of fiqh I have, I'm really not qualified to the answer. But I think it boils down to the issue of classifying the alcohol you mentioned as Najasa(filth) or not. Some scholors considers the alcohol not used for consumption as intoxicant is not filth. And Allah knows best [slm] Edited text appears below: Oops this is akhawat cafe, I didn't come entering thru the door, I just clicked on the Last updated topic in Forum statistics on the main Madina page. |

[slm] Here is a part of an answer by Islam Q&A: 5 – With regard to medicines that contain alcohol, if the amount of alcohol contained is large and may cause intoxication if a person drinks a large amount of the medication, then this medication counts as alcohol and it is haraam to use it or sell it. But if the amount of alcohol is little and will not cause intoxication no matter how much is drunk, then it is permissible to use it and sell it. It says in a fatwa issued by the Standing Committee concerning the sale of perfumes that contain alcohol: “If the amount of alcohol in the perfume reaches the level where it will cause intoxication if a lot of that perfume is drunk, then drinking that perfume is haraam, dealing in it is haraam, and that applies to all kinds of uses, because it is alcohol, whether it is a lot or a little. But if the thing with which the perfume is mixed, such as alcohol, does not reach the level where drinking a lot of it will cause intoxication, then it is permissible to use it and deal in it, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: ‘Whatever causes intoxication in large amounts, a little of it is haraam.’” (Fataawa al-Lajnah al-Daa’imah, 13/54) and Question: are you allowed to use products like purfumes, lotion.creams with alcohol in them? Answer: Dear Sr. A. As-salaamu alaykum. Yes, you may use cosmetic and beauty products and perfumes that contain alcohol in them. Thank you for asking and God knows best. Source: IslamiCity |

[slm] This is what I remember from my high school chemistry (chemists, pls verify): In chemistry, alcohol refers to an entire family of compounds. A compound may have a postfix of alcohol but it may not be what is classic alcohol. I believe only ethyl alcohol (ethanol) is intoxicating (and constitutes all forms of drinkable alcohol). In fact methanol (methyl alcohol) is toxic. Here is what I find from a website about cetyl alcohol: Health: Cetyl Alcohol is a nontoxic, nonirritating, and otherwise innocuous material Product Description Cetyl Alcohol, water based lubricant for fasteners. Meets requirements of Mil-L-87132 Type III Grade C. http://www.slickote.com/cetyl_alcohol.htm More tech info: http://physchem.ox.ac.uk/MSDS/CE/cetyl_alcohol.html Hardly seems to be of any concern. |
