[slm] yippee jannah.org's sisters page was mentioned in the computer section of The Sunday Times yesterday ;D inshallah this will mean a lot more western women may take the time to check out the page. funny sentence from the page "it is interesting that many fundamentalist muslim women see themselves as more liberated than western women" although the word 'fundamentlist' made me a bit >:( i actually thought it was quite funny because we are not deluded - we are more liberated because Allah swt told us so :P to the writer [wlm] |

as salaamu alaykum, this is what I found on the site: --- That’s amazing: Behind the veil Amber Cowan With copies of the Koran continuing to fly out of bookshops, it seems that people in the West are making an unprecedented effort to understand Islam. However hard you try, though, it is difficult to square 21st-century feminism with traditional Islamic beliefs: most non-Muslims find it hard to view women hidden under hajib veils as anything other than depressingly subjugated. Which is what makes the Muslim Women’s home page (www.jannah.org/sisters) so interesting. An encyclopedia of essays written by women for women, on everything from building a happy marriage to how to dress in accordance with the teachings of the Koran, it makes for illuminating reading. Most intriguing is the way that fundamentalist Muslim women see themselves as far more liberated than most westerners would expect. The art of the mix tape is a ritual that is also subject to certain strict doctrines. After all, the right C90 can earn the respect of your friends, but get it wrongand you risk bringing shame on your music taste for ever. Luckily, www.artofthemix.org is on hand to suggest track listings for tapes to suit every occasion, from the mixes that say “I secretly love you” to the ones that will help you to explain “I’ve just found out that I have a terminal disease”. Music buffs with a knack for pop-picking should also check out www.popex.com. This is a virtual stock exchange of bands, where you pick a pop idol, make a virtual £5,000 investment in your artist, then sit back and count the millions as your stocks soar or sink according to their popularity in real life. Budding Simon Fullers are advised that Alanis Morissette is a sound investment, while poor J-Lo spells financial disaster. --- |
Most intriguing is the way that fundamentalist Muslim women see themselves as far more liberated than most westerners would expect.
What a bum reporter... still i'm happy that that section of the page got linked to in the page. Insha'Allah when non-Muslims visit the page, they'll see the truth for themselves. Kashif Wa Salaam |
