I spoke with a very nice brother at 818-874-9373 and he told me he has been in touch with a social worker about these children. He was told something about the military/government having custody currently and he is trying to find out where the children are. He gave me his web site to visit www.niswa.com My hearts hurts not knowing where these children are. This brother I talked with is working up to 20 hours a day trying to help these children. If Afgan children are being brought into my country I want to know they are being love and cared for and are available to wonderful homes. That their needs are being met. I can imagine these children are scared. I would be if I was brought to a new and different country. Also the lady whose number is in the first post requests her numbers be taken off. I spoke with her today. |

cara which number are you talking about? this is a forward i got about the issue... Assalamu `alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh, Sorry for the barrage of emails regarding this issue, but I received additional messages seeming to suggest that there are actually Afghani orphans up for adoption in LA. Attached is a forward from the MSA of Memphis in support of this. Secondly, the following pointed out by Nadeem Siddiqi is excellent advice for all of us, especially those considering adoption: ... when dealing with adoption ... you can't just walk [into] an agency and say "I'll adopt two kids." So even if the Afghan orphan story was true, most people would not be able to adopt them right away ... agencies have a very strict process of checking people who wish to adopt through them, including background criminal etc. checks. All of this takes time, after which the person/family is placed on the agency's "eligible" list. If at that time children are up for adoption, those on the list are eligible to adopt. Speaking with some social workers, it seems there are very very few Muslim families who have actually gone through the process to be put on the eligible list. As a result, anytime new orphans come [Bosnia/Afghanistan/Somalia/etc] Muslims are not able to adopt, and they get upset over "missionary" conspiracies etc when in fact, we simply have not gone through the process to be registered. If we are serious, we should register now, for the future. Additionally, the contact info for the organization involved with the case of these Afghan children (or so I am told) is Niswa Association P.O Box 1403 Lomita, CA 90717 I do not have their email or telephone contact info. However, in a forwarded message I received (the email address of the original forwarder was omitted), the Niswa Association made the following request(s): To be able to participate in either Foster Parenting or Adoption government programs, we need an immediate response from you to be willing to go through the process of obtaining certification for Foster Parenting. Please note that without having the proper certification documents, one will not be able to care for these children as Foster Parents. For information on how to become Foster Parents, Los Angles County Residence, please call (888) 811-1121, other counties, please contact your local county Department of Children and Family Services or your local Family Foster Care and Adoption agencies listed on your local Smart Yellow Pages Telephone Directory. Please contact your Afghan Niswa Committee after you have been certified by your agency or county at the following telephone and fax numbers between the hours of 3 to 8 PM Los Angeles time. A. Mohammad Daoud Abedi (818) 874-9373, Fax (818) 874-9374 B. Gabriel and Zohra Veach (909) 779-0084 Please note that general policy of the local government is "first come first served" and there is no guarantee that the children will be available as time passes by. Additionally, an email message from AMANA <AMANA@theAMANA.org> provided the following email contact information: Florid9999@aol.com asifmasroor@hotmail.com I know nothing about the veracity of either the telephone contact information or email contact information, but as I have received more messages about this issue since my last email to this list, including messages saying that individuals did call those numbers and they were accurate, I thought I would provide the updated information. Again, if any of you try the phone numbers and find that they are incorrect, please let me know so we do not have to have any wasted efforts, if that is the case. Jazakum Allahu khairan. Wassalam, Umair ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Forwarded Message ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ From: "Muslim Students Association of Memphis" Date: Sun, 24 Mar 2002 19:42:45 -0600 Subject: [Chicago-Net] Concerning the Adoption of the Afghani Orphans Muslim Students Association of Memphis: Masjid An-Noor Community Center 3529 Mynders Avenue Memphis, TN 38111 Tel: 901-432-0761 Fax: 901-432-0762 E-mail: msaofmemphis@hotmail.com URL: www.msaofmemphis.org As Salaamu Alaykum Warahmathulahi Wabarakathu, Some of you have contacted us from Memphis, Chicago and other communities regarding the e-mail for the Afghani orphans for adoption in L.A. The first thing we would like to mention regarding this e-mail is that we are NOT responsible for this program, an organization knows as the Niswaa Association is endorsing this program and we only forwarded the information for the benefit of the Muslims. Furthermore we would also like address the following issues: 1) This original information was forwarded to us by some brothers in our Memphis community and we were requested to send it out to the members on our lists so we did. 2) We later came to find out that unfortuantely, the telephone number on the original e-mail was not the correct number call concerning these orphans. However, the brother who's number it was (in the L.A. area) had left a general message instructing those calling him about the orphans to recheck their information and to also let him know the correct information once they found out. 3) And that leads to the third point. A second e-mail concerning the orphans was sent out soon after the first. Again, one reliable brother from the Memphis community called those numbers (that are listed below in this e-mail) and did verify that these telephone numbers were LEGIT and they should be called for information regarding the orphans. He then let us know at Masjid An-Noor. 4) We did not mean for any e-mail to be sent out to the Chicago list, although our e-mail account does receive e-mails from the Chicago listserve. And we say this mainly in reference to the letter sent out yesterday to the Chicago listserve that was sent out by mistake and was meant for an individual thus we apologize for that error. With that said we also want to answer some other questions that were posed to us about what "type" of "adoption" our e-mail was talking about. First, we will repeat for clarification purposes, we are NOT reponsible for this adoption program so please do not contact us regarding this program (again the correct contact info in L.A. is at the end of this e-mail). We only forwarded the information for the benefit of the Muslims and Insha'Allah in hopes of finding these orphans homes in the Muslim communities. But it should be said we at MSA/Masjid An-Noor obviously do not support any type of program, activity or the like that would contradict the Islamic Shariah. And questions/comments/concerns that say otherwise should be directed to us for further clarification using any of the aforementioned contact information. The correct contact information for the orphans is as follows. Please call these Muslims in the Los Angeles area and not Masjid An-Noor regarding this program. Also a MS Word document is attached to this e-mail with this and additional information 1. Mohammad Daoud Abedi (818) 874-9373, Fax (818) 874-9374 2. Gabriel and Zohra Veach (909) 779-0084 Insha'Allah we hope that this will resolve any confusion caused by these recent e-mails and we pray that Allah SWT provides sound Islamic homes for these Muslim children. Jazzakumallahu khayran. Wasalaamu Alaykum MSA of Memphis |
