:oThe Press called me today and want to do a feature on me and my puppet!
They heard that I have been going to elementary classes and explaining Islam.

:PI have only done "Ramadan" shows.

;-) :-)If you had my chance- what would you tell the kids about Islam?

:-[oh Yeah!

:-/I have finally decided on a name for my puppet! :-/

[]Last night I was waiting for our Women in Islam class to begin and I picked up a book on shirk and began reading it.  I had just made dua to Allah swt to help me pick a name- for the best of reasons.

I opened up the book- and saw- in the table of contents- Dearest names to Allah...

;)Can't get any clearer than that!

;DDo you know what it is?

I think ordinary people are open to hear the other side of the story if only given the chance.

I would tell them that islam means the submission to the One True God with love and humility; to respect the elderly and be kind to the younguns; to take care of the orphans and feed the poor, the wayfarer, and the captive;to honor the guest and look out for the neighbors; to have mercy on the animals, the plants, and all the creation of God because He *is* the Most Merciful and we are His servants!- you can then talk about it means to be Abdullah ;)

May Allah[swt] reward you amply for all the good that you do for His sake. I'll be making du'a insh'Allah that this particular interview goes well and becomes a source of inspiration to all who read it. Ameen!!!!

As-salaamu 'alaikum wa rahmatullah,
Masha'Allah la quwatta illa billah.
:)

Great name!  I'm not sure what best to focus on for kids, but as you probably know, kids loooove stories.  So choose a few interesting stories of the Prophets, the sahabah, the caliphs for moral lessons.

Here are few more topics:
1) Islamic Manners/Behavior - there's a good book by Shaykh Ghudda, as well as others
2) Kids and their relationship to their parents
3) Of course, to teach the basic teachings of Islam.  Don't necessarily have to break them down by the 5 pillars
4) Teach the importance of education, from an Islamic perspective.

Allahu'alim, I'm sure you'll do grrreat, iA.

assalaamu alaikum

I would teach them that Islam is all about two types of goodness:
- Goodness towards your Maker
- Goodness towards other people.

I'd have Abdullah tell them about how much the sisters are respected and how they have so many rights..

Assalamu alaikum,
If the kids are quite young (elementary school) I'd have to give them information that's concrete to them at their age.  What I would probably do is to make them think about (and tell you) all the nice things they have (things and people) at home, and then make them think about all the other nice things that they like in the world, and then ask them who gave them to us... (and you'll probably have to answer for them too).
In return, what does Allah want us to do?
He wants us to be nice to people, to our mothers and fathers and to everyone we know and to share things with them (and expand on that).. He wants us to be nice to animals and trees too (and give for example the hadeeth about the man who gave a dog water and was put in paradise for that and other hadeeths...).  He also wants us to say thank you, just like our moms and dads do when they give us presents, and the way we say thank you is to pray to him and say thank you in the prayer.
There's a hard question that they might ask, is that why doesn't everyone have nice things?  I would answer that Allah made enough nice things for everybody, but some people were greedy and they took other people's nice things for themselves.
I also agree that stories are nice.  The story of Nuh (AS) is always popular with kids :)
Wallahu a'lam.

In the American School we can not "preach" religion.

However- we can tell them what Islam is- who are Muslims, what we do,
You can give comparative thoughts.

It is a dancing line you can not cross. At this point  I want to introduce Islam- make the teachers (kids are never the problem) comfortable with me- so they will ask me back!

I am concerned with going "too far" in their eyes- and never making it in the door again.  My theory is to plant the seed....

Yes- the kids are age 5-8.

Presently I am goning to a school where everyone knows me- so the initial nervousness is not there. However, next month I am going to a district teachers conference- to sell my show.Anyone have a good story- with a laugh at the end- to start it all off?

i dont know if this will be cheezy or helpful, but how about taking a short episode from salaam's journey and showing that? its cute and funny, and who wouldnt love mahmood?? (the elephant) ... something of that nature would provoke their interest, i think...i mean, what kid doesnt enjoy cartoons?

[slm],

Islamic Networks Group (I hope I have the name right) in San Jose, should have some material they use for their presentations in schools. I remember one sister from that group talking about it at a conference. Maybe you should try and get their contact info and contact them. The sister was exactly conveying same sentiments that you can not preach religion in schools, you have to give them more general of an introduction centered towards who muslims are etc. Yet she had responses from kids ranging from "I'd love to be friends with muslims", "It's a cool religion", "It makes lot of sense" and even "I want to be a muslim!!!".
