Could it Happen to You?

This evening I was at  :)Walmart-(a store).

I went to the camera/film/photo section and there was a big display :

[glow=blue,2,300]"Do You Know These People?"[/glow]

On the bulletin board- was 1 picture from each roll of film taken by people who have not picked up their pictures after having them developed there.

:PYep- and there was a group shot of about 15 of our Muslimahs from my community- uncovered. (most of them wear the naked or yo yo scarves, anyway)
                               :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)
                                   :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

:-)This may be food for thought for those of us that allow someone to take our pictures- uncovered.
                  :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-)
                       :-) :-) :-) :-) :-)

:-[ps- This topic was not started to get into a debate about photos- go to your Imam or Islam Q&A for more info....

woah! that's a little scary. I thought maybe if you just took those "uncovered" pictures in the middle of the roll, no one would see the ones that end up being on the top of the stack when they come out of the machine!  I usually don't take uncovered pics, so i guess i'll have to keep doing that.  That's too bad, especially for weddings and wedding parties that are segregated, people take lots of pictures then.  That makes for a good excuse to get a digital camera  ;D

If you take your pictures to a photo shop rather than Walmart, each picture is still developed by hand, at least where I live.  If you are concerned, you must make sure that the technician who develops your roll of film is a woman!!  or you can learn to develop them yourself -- it really isn't that hard at all, if you have access to the necessary equipment. :-*
(If you take any photography classes, the equipment is usually available to students).

In any case, the girls who were in the pictures posted at Walmart should have picked them up and paid for them long before this became a possibility.  ::) :P

Assalamu alaikum
I don't even take uncovered pics even if they're developed by a machine.
If I did want an uncovered picture (like the sister who sent them to her hubby) I'd take them with a digital camera and send it right to him thru email.

My guess is that thier address and phone number were not on there- just an illegible name. :P

:'(Also, from thier point of view- they had to pay for developing, materials and employee time.... They should be picked up and paid for.

To send you junk mail, try to sell you what you don't really need...

Hmm, I thought they cannot display someone's pictures without their consent. Maybe the consent is buried in the fine print of the order form?

You know what it's like -
- Hubby wants to take a photo of the baby, and you ain't got your hijab on, so you're holding the baby and leaning WAY out to the side hoping you're not on.. ::)
- So the photo's come back, and you're on there, not only uncovered, but looking like you're in pain coz you're leaning so much.... :(
- But you think ah well, I'll just hide that one, it'll never see the light of day.... ;)
- Five years later you find out the in-laws who just got back from Pakistan had some how got a copy of that photo, and showed it to all the relatives over there who really had a good look coz they've never seen you before.......... :P :P :'( :'( ;D ;D ;D ;D

It happened to me!!

"and there was a group shot of about 15 of our Muslimahs from my community-
uncovered. (most of them wear the naked or yo yo scarves, anyway) "

This is one of the cruelest things I've read on this message board.

I think if you are really concerned, you would do one of two things:
* buy the photos and either throw them away or give them to them
OR
* tell the sisters in the photos to hurry into the Walmart

It seems to me that the Walmart is doing this in an effort to be nice and find the owners
of these forgotten photos rather than as some means of public embarassment. The one who
sees these photos and lets them stay there, however, knows that these girls would not like
to have their photos displayed in public.

I certainly hope there's nothing gleeful in the tone of the sentence about how they wear
what you deem to be insufficient covering, and now their uncovered heads are being shown
in public. I personally shrink when I hear how unsupportive most Muslimahs are of their
sisters in Islam based on the notion that we are better than "them" and so on and so
forth. Many women find it very difficult, for cultural, professional, or other personal
reasons, to dress in the way that others think they should. The majority of Muslim women that I
know have gradually changed their mode of dress after considerable thought about the
issue. Rather than degrade their effort, realize that they are still identifying themselves
to the non-Muslim public as Muslim. When sikhs have been killed for their turbans, a
Muslim woman even in a see-through scarf remains a Muslim woman who is identifiable as such.
If we don't protect her, who will?

And if we are to learn any lesson from this, how about applying this idea of concern for
each other to the people who are actually affected by this incident?

You are so right.

I was kicking myself for not purchasing them right away and/ or asking management to take the picture down. These guilts happened soon after I had left.

I guess I rationalized it by thinking that they do not cover anyway- except at the mosque so it didn't seem to be such a concern,  It wasn't posted as a cruel comment.

I was hestitant to post that incident because of the mistake I made- I was hoping others would learn from it.

It is ironic that I remember thinking if it was one of our sisters who covered at all times I would have torn it down.

By the way- I was very concerned and I did make several phone calls the moment I got home and e-mailed all of those that I was unable to get ahold of.

Thank you for taking the time to post. May Allah swt forgive me and accept my repentance.

As-Salaamu Alaikum!
I know exactly what you mean on this one! You see, my dilemma is that before I became a Muslim, I was a model and actress. So there are photos of me out there that I have no idea where they'll end up! :o Unfortunately, this has been a major concern of mine, since I am a relatively new convert. I just pray ALLAH (SWT) forgives me and knows that I leave all that behind me. :'(

welcome to the madina! please introduce yourself in the bebzi stand and tell us some more about how you came to islam, especially since you said  that you were a model and an actress before your "reversion".  I wonder how it has been to give that part of your life up? Frustrating? Liberating?

with regards to taking photos uncovered at weddings - i went to a friends wedding last year.  the wedding was segregated etc and obviously she wasn't wearing her hijab.  but she wouldn't let anyone take photos of her except her mother or aunt who were sharing a camera.  these photos were then going to be devloped by a muslimah to prevent anyone unnecessary seeing them.  as you can imagine this ruffled a few feathers at the wedding - but she was just like tough! (not literally - she was very polite about it) - but i thought this was really cool 8)

Terrorists?  I think thats a bit of an exaggeration.  Quite a few people on this board shop there, like Jannah, Se7en, and Princess.

hmm the poor workers there are underpaid and overworked.. they are not allowed to unionize at all to change their situation.

and yup... refer to thread with my "crazy wal-mart" story...there are 'ignorant to islam' ppl everywhere, i don't think it's limited to wal-mart unfortunately...

Wow, Ruqayyah!
That is such a long and adventurous testimony!  :) I will have to think of a way to consolidate a lifetime's worth of tribulation and jubiliation into a readable few paragraphs! :-* I can say this, however:
I am from Chicago, Il., which is considered to be "Little Hollywood" in the entertainment industry. I have met quite a few celebrities, and have even befriended a few. A very fast - paced, fascinating life.
Throughout childhood and early adolescence, I longed to fit in, because I didn't fit in ANYWHERE! So when I was viewed as the 'ideal model criteria', I saw my newfound career as payback towards all those family and friends who ostracized me. I felt like it was just cause that everyone would want to be me; be like me, or partake in my lifestyle. I had whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted it. Except............. ???
ALLAH's (SWT) Mercy kept me in His good Grace, and He allowed me to remember who I really Am. There is a saying in the bible that goes something like this: "What shall it profit a man if he shall gain the whole world and yet lose his own soul?" I can answer that now.
Yes, I am a new revert (thank you for correcting me). Yes I do still struggle with missing the so - called clout I used to have and the material possesions I have had to part with. It is because I have tried my entire life to 'fit in', and now I have taken myself back out of the mainstream of American society. But ALLAH (SWT) is the Best Knower.
I can say with the utmost confidence that I have NEVER in my entire life felt the amount of Salaam that I do now. Alhamdulillah! And since it appears to others that I have "fallen off" - or lost everything, I can inform them that they are mistaken. All of the 'things' I have acquired in this life that were either haram or not in accordance with the sunnah or the Shariah, ALLAH (SWT) has removed them from me; Inshallah He Will replace them with more bountiful, Righteous 'things'.  8)

More later, Inshallah.  :-)

as salaamu alaykum,

Ms.Bey, may Allah guide you always :)

AyeshaZ, there's actually more than one story because jannah always seems to get herself into trouble at wal-mart :P

one I can remember from a while back is when jannah was standing in line (I think), and some woman told her that she didn't need to "wear that propaganda anymore" because she's in the United States now  ::)

I think it was something like that.. all those comments tend to blend together after a while.. :P

Awwww...
But Wal-Mart's the only place closeby that has 20 minute Photos  :'(  AND I can pick up bananas while I'm there.

But I guess you're right, we should stop the madness and not further induce, or perpetuate the conglomeration of the supasto' .  It's just not fair to the various blacks and japan camera's out there.  We gotta think of the small fry, coz everyone needs a little competition (pun intended).

Salaams,
I hope my loathing wal-mart isn't taking away from the discussion, but I always wondered about that.  Sisters would be like, hey you can't look at these picture, but you can look at those, and I thought well what if a guy developed them. Either sisters didn't think the process through or there may be a double standard in place there.  But that's a different topic.

Hey but wal-mart, man it's and ARM PIT.   I mean a complete lack of style and taste.  And I don't think everyone has to shop at TOP DOLLAR stores, that's why I said atleast shop at Target, even K-Mart is better than WALLY WORLD.  If I told you any wal-mart stories, they would all have to do with me being dragged KICKING AND SCREAMING into it's door.  JUST YUCK!  My wife worked there when she lived in Indiana, she can tell you some real stories of Wally World.  And remember class, our math equation for today is Wal-Mart = ARM PIT.

Br. Naeem, you came on a little strong about Wal-Mart. Not that i'm defending it but just saying.
Alhamdulillah neither me, my mom or my family have any trouble with Wally World employees or such.  maybe it's the Wally World next to my house that is the exception, wAllahu A3lam.  But not everyone who works there or the products sold aren't all that bad, just my opinion.

However, I do agree with the pics issue. I, personally, forget to think of who's developing them, but Alhamdulillah I don't take pics w/o hijab often. I know, even the times I do, i need to be careful and inshaAllah I will next time  :)

the notion that someone could look at my photo pics while developing them makes me feel dirty and used!  and i just remembered an occassion when i had a photo colour photocopied.  the guy copied the pics and i never really thought about how he could see my uncovered face cos i really wanted the pics, astagfirullah  :(

I know i'll never do that again!  the pic was from my "uncovered year" at uni and i know my friends all have this pic of me.  i just wonder who they'll show it to.  i dont want ppl to see me uncovered without my consent cos i'm a hijabi now.  i'll just be careful now about who's taking my photo.

Hmph! I've not been wearing hijab for even a full year yet, so people are still asking me, "But I've SEEN your hair, so why'd you cover in front of me?"  A lot of them have pics of me without hijab  :( I don't even take pics any more, but there's enough 'uncovered' ones about for people to know exactly whats under the white canopy!  Not least of which are the ones up in the living room which any visitor can see - my parents wont let me take them down cos they say no one bothers to look...what do I do about that?
Actually you know what?  I'm going to save myself the agonising and take em down now inshallah!  :-)
