shopping

assalamu alaikum,

so why is it that women have this reputation that they shop too much ?? and why does it get on the nerves of men so much to be in a mall??

is it the crowdiness - i.e, could men be more prone to clustrophobia? or is it that they are more frugal beings?

my shopping habits are quite benign .  i go every once and a while. as luck would have it, i find a bargain each time i go and buy it!   ;D  now is that too much, considering that i go maybe twice every month?? or should i consider joining our local 'shoppers anonymous' chapter ::)

what do you think akhawat? do any of you  face similar false accusations from family and close ones?

brothers, why do you hate malls with such a passion?  enlighten us please.

take care
wassalamu alaikum

hmm, I removed it. Since there seems to be some interest (from guys only btw :)), I will post it again.

wa alaikum us-salaam wa rahmatullah,

>>so why is it that women have this reputation that they shop too much ??
Because they shop too much!

>>and why does it get on the nerves of men so much to be in a mall??
Because they are in the mall too long!

>>is it the crowdiness
Nah.(bros love to be in sports stadiums, auto shows,...)

>>my shopping habits are quite benign .  i go every once and a while.
You went today, didn't you? ;)

>>considering that i go maybe twice every month
Compare that with once every six months??

>>brothers, why do you hate malls with such a passion?  enlighten us please.
It is unproductive. Brothers like to spend quality time with their womenfolk, and spending the whole weekend going back and forth a dozen times to buy one item is not exactly quality (quantity?).

>>what do you think akhawat?
Let the 'how guys hate shopping' stories begin!
:)

wow i must admit to alot of spaping myself...:-X

but for the educational englightenment of brothers everywhere, here are the complex, psychological reasons why women shop:

1. cause they can finally get out the house, away from the screaming kids, tv and husband environment

2. it's fun to hang out with friends and discuss your probs, solution and current life while walking endlessly

3. sometimes the mall is the only halal place in your town

4. buying stuff is known to psychologically make a person feel better, and probably twice as better if they feel they've got a bargain!

5. it's kind of like going to a museum... see what's out there.. what trends are going on.. it's really information fact finding for some sisters

6. they like to break all stereotypes of the muslim woman who is forced to stay at home and is oppressed (visual dawah)

and.........the best reason..............

7. their husbands or brothers refuse to shop so the wives need to buy their stuff for them!!

way to go jannah - i like your list.  the visual dawah point is really good  :D personally, i find shopping theraputic.

br. asim, no i did not go shopping that day. it just so happenned that my fiancee was complaining that i frequent the malls a lot.

but what an ingenius term you coined!! spopping!! must add it to the rest of madina lingo.

where are the rest of sisters' replies - they must be still in denial about spopping.

chellax everyone  :-*

hmmm "WORLDLY STUFF"  ;)  I think that has a negative connotation. I think there's nothing wrong with trying to look nice for sisters parties or for your husband.. it builds your self esteem and God knows if you wear hijab you need it.

Hold it a second, i see a lot of stereotypes being thrown around here!! So much so that i may retaliate with my own thread in the bro's folder  ;)

"so why is it that women have this reputation that they shop too much ??"

I dont think its a case of you shopping to much, its a case of you shopping POINTLESSLY too much, like buying several hair shampoos, loads of different soaps, all kinds of strnage hair clips and makeup, even though you have whole drawers full of the stuff at home!

Also, buying clothes and never wearing them is something i just dont undertsand  ???

"and why does it get on the nerves of men so much to be in a mall??

is it the crowdiness - i.e, could men be more prone to clustrophobia? or is it that they are more frugal beings?"

No. Its just that when the man and wife go shopping, the man has no choice BUT to listen to the woman yip yap pointlessly about the latest hair enriching shampoo with its fruit extracts!!

The men prefer to eat the fruit, not rub it in thier hair  :)

"i go every once and a while. as luck would have it, i find a bargain each time i go and buy it!"

Luck? Having several highly skilled Bargain hunting sisters looking around, then text-mesaging you the latest bargain is not  my idea of luck, most would call it a Highly Organised Bargain Hunting ;)

"  brothers, why do you hate malls with such a passion?  enlighten us please"

We dont hate it, where do you think we buy our clothes from? We only dislike having to go into womans clothes shop and wait an hour while you try on all the bargians you see!! Believe me sister, its no fun standing around nervously outside a womans fitting room waiting for you guys, while all the other bargain hunting woman give us strange looks, thinking wear pervs  :'(

Most bros dont mind shopping, as long as its quick, and as long as its for all the things we really need. To assume men really hate shopping with a passin is not an accurate stereotype  ;-)

Remember, the next time your in a fitting room, checking that every seam is sticthed perfectly on the lastest bargain your trying on, your brother or husband is nervously twiching outside surrounded by womens cloths not knowing whether to look around, or look at the floor  :'(

I find it quite frustrating actually, to go shopping. I go in, buy what i want and get back out...my mum & older sis can spend AGES shopping!!

But i think sis Jannah made a good enough list to explain why it is women like to shop!

You know bros, women may take ages buying clothes, shoes etc. but you lot tend to take ages buying electrical stuff - now that does get boring too you know! :P And sometimes, if not all the time, it does mean a lot to the women if you take time out and actually take an interest in what they buy!

I also dont think theres anything wrong with buying make-up etc., it doesnt say anywhere that women are not allowed to look good, esp. for their hubbys & in women-only parties/functions.

Ok i don't wish to dampen the mood here but malls are not halal places. In fact heres hadith about them being the worst of places.

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) said: the Prophet (PBUH) said, "The dearest parts on the face of the earth near Allah are its mosques, and the most hated parts near Allah are its markets.(Muslim)

Salman Al-Farisi (May Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (PBUH) said, "Do not, if you can help, be the first to enter the market and the last to leave it because it is an arena of Satan and the standard of Satan is set there.''(Muslim)

Is shopping a 4-letter word ? heh heh

Hmmmmmmmm

Lets see now, do I like shopping or do I not ? That, my dear Watson, is the question.

I do not often shop (stop smirking Barr) but when I do, I make sure I get a good bargain so as to get my money's worth.  I came from a poor family so I did not have the luxury of just going into the first shop, grab anything off the shelf and pay.  My momma taught me to look for good stuff that's cheap. That habit remain with me. Sometimes I can save about $2.50 on the same item sold elsewhere.  A good example would be staples like my childrens' milk, clothes, soap, shampoo, husband's shaving cream, toothpaste etc.  I shopped around in at least 8 places before I found one shop that sells almost all these things at lower prices.  Then we have the womens' staples.  We have to get halaal facial cream, facial wash etc.  That takes savvy shopping skills too.

Now that I am a student and no longer earning any income, frugal spending is more incumbent for me. It took me 2 weeks of shopping around in KL before I found a cheap place that sells fresh vegetables and fruits.

With all that said, is shopping then a 4 letter word ? HAH !

PS Jannah is spot on with one thing.  Shopping allows us to talk with our friends while on the move and getting things done.  Now, wouldn't u call that killing two birds with one stone ?  :-)

I'm not big on spopping..unless it's for perfumes ;)

The day i go shopping for clothes is particularly painful!  :'(

I never find the right stuff :( all the skirts are either short or have a slit somewhere they shouldn't! and then there's the ordeal of finding a matching hijab!! Arghhhhhhh  >:( it's times like these that i almost wish i was a man...Ok, i said ALMOST!   :P

Now if you ask me about shopping in dubai, i'd give a totally different answer ;)

As to the original question, i think someone already mentioned that it depends on what they're buying. Men are not too averse to shop for the latest high tech gadgets, electrical equipments or cars  ::) or like some brothers *cough* bhaloo *cough*  for food :o  :D

:-[ I think it would not be too much off the mark to say that shopping is to women what watching/playing sports and playing video games are to men*

peace,  :-)

* of course there's an exception to every rule :)

LOL Great post Jannah!! soooooo true!!!!!! hahaha

I think the reason why men are not a fan of going out with Women to shop is because:

Men~ They go out, the know what they want and they go get it. Hunt and conquer.

Women~They go out, they know what they want, yet we enjoy taking an hour looking for it, which we ooohhh & aaahhh over other stuff we are not going to even buy. And usually we even come out with a few extra things we forgot we "needed". LOL! I am getting better though!! Honest!  :-/  :-/

Yet since hubby and I sell stuff online, he loooves to take his time at the store!!! Yes!!!  ;D  ;D

One word, its boring. I mean after you've loked at the 7th pair of shoes, the 43rd handbag and the 27th jumper they all kinda look the same.
it's kind of like going to a museum... see what's out there..
Yeah I agree but you don't have to go every week now do you, its not like the museum's gonna change its fashion show. Or something new from Pari has arrived and you shop till you drop week in week out.

I bet some of the sisters over here also watch that 24hour sales TV programme where they sell everything and anything I think its called QVC or something. So no need to go for the mall today just have some popcorn to browse through the TV sales...wow.
