Jewelry of kaaba and reaction

my father bought me a charm of the kaaba which i only recently started
wearing because of personal reasons.  i was on the subway wearing it
and reading my book when i looked up to check the station i was at.  i
noticed this desi STARING at me like i had done something unforgivable to
him.  the only thing i could think of was my charm disturbing him.  i
feel that maybe i wasn't wearing it properly, or that i wasn't supposed
to be wearing it.  i'm not sure, i don't know about jewelry wearing
etiquette. then my other hypothesis was that he thought i was a hypocrite
for wearing it because i don't wear hijab.  that's not something i'm
proud of, i'm even posting anonymously because of it.  i wanted to hear a
more educated opinion before i put it away for good. thanks for your
responses,

wlm,

you know what sister... something i came to realize when i went overseas... staring is quite normal there.. everyone does it... even we got into the habit~!!! it's not rude there at all... it's just like you see something interesting or weird you openly check it out...

so it may be that the guy, never seeing anything like that, thought it was interesting and was trying to concentrate and stare at it more... or he may have just been staring at you cause you're pretty or something ;)

in any case i don't know of rulings about kaaba as necklaces... Allah knows best...

and ummm posting anonymously !!!! WHY????  there are alot of sisters who don't wear hijab... we don't exclude or judge them here!!! please become a member and join in!!!

one thing i learned from a conf i just attended is that we have to be more inclusive...i mean we really need to try much much harder to be so....

so sister don't feel intimidated if some ppl wear hijab here... alhamdulillah they are practicing one fard... but we don't know if they are practicing anything else right... i think cause hijab is so visible we feel like if you wear it than you're like totally perfect and if you don't you're not!  it's not that extreme at all... we're all at continuums and some ppl might be at the level of wearing it and struggling in other things or vice versa... or struggling in everything... alhamdulillah that's what islam is all about

anyway that goes for the hypocrite comment too...just because you don't wear hijab but you wear a kaba necklace doesn't mean you're a hypocrite..... like i said.. everyone has to keep working and perfecting at their fards all the time... for some it may be prayer.. for others attending jumuah..for others hijab... it doesn't mean they are not muslims or they don't have faith... they may have alot of faith...but they are still struggling to put it into action...

this also goes for sisters who wear hijab only sometimes.. i'm a strong supporter of this "trial method" versus never wearing it all.. i mean some sisters today don't wear it at islamic events or even masjids! because they don't want to be "hypocrities" because they don't do it outside... but really psychologically some people need to go gradually.. it's good that you do it even part of the time...part of the time you are fulfilling a fard...

it's like coming to the mosque and sitting in the basement not praying when the athan is called and everyone goes up.. because you don't pray regularly at home!!! WHAT come on.... that person should  at least go up and pray ...it is a fard and at least they did one prayer... and that one prayer or that half day of hijab covering, or covering only at school... or to the mall.... may help them become a better Muslim.. make them realize things, help them build confidence.. and protect them... and even wearing a kaaba neclace may help you feel your islamic identity more and lead you to khair...inshaAllah

sorry for rambling :) may Allah guide us all...
take care inshaAllah

[slm] :)
Believe me he could have been staring at you for 100s of reasons:- maybe he's a weirdo, pervert, has a habit of staring.....etc or maybe hes just a typical desi ;D Most desi ppl stare, especially freshies :D Its very irritating and intimidating.

Maybe the charm was worn around your neck and he felt you shouldn't be exposing your neck-chest area, i don't know. Only Allah and he knows why he was staring in such an abrupt manner to make you uncomfortable. Of course if he's so concerned about hypocrisy he shouldn't be staring at a non-mahram in the first place!

However what I can say convincingly is that if we put him under the spotlight I'm sure we could find many flaws in him. No ones perfect, we all have flaws and should concentrate on them rather than nitpicking on others. That desi should take note :)

[wlm]

A side note - "charms", in the sense of bringing good luck or fortune are haram and border on shirk. We should never wear anything for such a purpose.

:oIf it were me I would forget that I was keep "staring"

:-[- I would be thinking- is that really the Kaaba? nah... well.. maybe...How cool is that. I wonder wear I could get one. Wonder if Mary would like one. Maybe my neices would like it. Hey what great dawah- it is such a universal symbol of Islam.... I would like to ask her where she got it. Hmm... wonder if she speaks english... Maybe it would be too personal to ask...

:PIn the meantime I was staring- and not even realizing it!

;)Also- what Jannah said about the scarf is so true! So many of us did not cover for a long time- and we surely are not judging you or anyone.

:-)- Even those that cover have their own issues. Are we covering enough? Are we adorning ourselves? Is the scarf covering our bosom? Does it really have to be? Is it wrinkled? Is it slipping? Are any hairs peeking out? Is Mary going to notice that I am wearing the scarf she gave me?

Wear did you get the Charm?

:-)

[slm],

There was this joke sheik Yusuf Estes told the other day, about a brother from back home, whose stare was following a woman on the street, and he asked him, brother what are you doing? and he said, Hold it!!! I didn't blink yet!!!

Nice nice post Jannah :) Masha Allah

To the sis - you don't even know if the desi was Muslim.. as the others said there could be a thousand reasons why he was staring at you or your necklace. Maybe he was entranced by the beauty of the Kaaba and resolved to himself to find out more about Islam? Insha Allah.

And Desi's DO stare.. lol..  When my parents-in-law came to visit last year - their first time outside of Pakistan - they STARED at everyone.   :o   I was mortified... ::)  But my husband says it's just normal over there to go around staring at everyone and anyone. Then I said it was no wonder my mother in law was "ashamed" to go outside much.. she probably thought everyone was staring like they do back home..  :P
But I love them to bits and I'm NOT dissing anyone here okay?

wasalaam
