From Islam Q&A:

Does a woman have to shave her pubic hair after every period?

Answer:

Praise be to Allaah.

Removing the pubic hair, whether by plucking, using a depilatory agent, shaving or cutting, is one of the actions dictated by the fitrah and encouraged by Islam, but it is not restricted to or required at the end of every period.

Ahmad, al-Bukhaari, Muslim and the authors of Sunan reported that the Messenger of Allaah  (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Five things are part of the fitrah: removing the pubic hairs, circumcision, trimming the moustache, plucking the armpit hairs, and trimming the nails.”

It was reported that Anas (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: “A time limit was set for us with regard to trimming the moustache, cutting the nails, plucking the armpit hairs, and shaving the pubic hair – we should not leave it for more than forty days. (Reported by Muslim, Ibn Maajah, Ahmad, al-Tirmidhi, al-Nisaa’i and Abu Dawood). They said: “The Messenger of Allaah  (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) set a time limit for us…”

This is a VERY good topic.

Did that just say PLUCKING underarm hair? This is something I need to know.. till now I've always shaved although I've heard that women shouldn't shave - they should pluck or use depilatory cream.. for armpit and pubic hair
What's the story?

[slm] Sister Barraa,

I'd be really interested to have the reference for the hadith you are referring to. I'm sure we all believe you when you say you  are 100% sure but it's nice to check back for reference and to read it for ourselves :)

thank you

Assalamu'alaikum,

OK, I'm not sure whether this question will eventually make through to
the board, but...

I did try shaving it all off, it was fine at first, but it gets very
uncomfortable as the hair starts out to grow again the very next day or
two.

Does anyone experience this? How do you avoid from having this
discomfort? ???
Since then, I only trim it with a scissors, but I maintain some length
still, for comfort.

I hope that is still within the sunnah, inshaAllah.

thank you.
wassalam

There is no avoiding the discomfort of new growth- from a complete shave.

The best thing you can do is to use a new razor.

You said 100% sure that it was 48 days, provide your evidence.  From what I know it is 40 days, and my evidence is listed below.

Fiqh-us-Sunnah Fiqh 1.21c
Clipping one's fingernails, trimming and shaving his moustache
Ibn 'Umar related that the Messenger of Allah said, "Differ from the polytheists: let your beards (grow)" and shave your moustache." (Related by al-Bukhari and Muslim). Abu Hurairah reported that the Messenger of Allah, upon whom be peace, said, "Five things are part of one's fitra: Shaving the pubic hairs, circumcision, trimming the moustache, removing the hair under the arms and trimming the nails." (Related by "the group.") It does not mention which one would specifically fulfill the sunnah. One should make sure that his moustache is not so long that food particles, drink and dirt accumulate in it. Zaid ibn Arqam related that the Prophet, upon whom be peace, said "Whoever does not take (off) some of his moustache is not one of us." (Related by Ahmad, an-Nasa'i and at-Tirmidhi, who classified it as sahih.) It is preferred to cut the pubic hairs, pluck out the underarm hairs, cut the nails and trim the moustache on a weekly basis, a practice which is most hygenic. If some unnecessary hair is left on the body for a longer period of time, it may disturb the person. One may leave this action for forty days , but no longer . Said Anas, "The time period for us to trim the moustache, cut the nails, pluck out the underarm hairs and cut the pubic hairs was forty nights." (Related by Ahmad, Abu Dawud and others).

The point I was trying to make was that when we say something and attribute it to the Prophet (SAW) we need to be sure.  When you said 48 days, I had not heard that before and have not seen the proof for this, BUT as I and another user pointed out in another hadith 40 was used.  What I'm saying is that if you attribute something to Allah (SWT) or the Prophet (SAW), provide the evidence.

This is a dangerous statement to make.

First of all it appears that you are saying that it can be any one of these numbers- and it isn't.

Secondly to say shave every week is also inaccurate.  This statement also implies that we are to shave every week "to be on the safe side." This may place an undue burden on certain Muslims- especially the elderly, if they were to read your statement and think it is what Allah swt has asked.
