Alhamdullillah, I finished the book Rememberance of Death and Afterlife by Al Ghazali. For a nice reminder on why we are on earth to begin with, I would highly recommend this book to anyone. Al Ghazali took me on an amazing journey. The beginning was an introduction on how heedless and lazy we are despite the fact that death comes at any moment. He spoke of having lengthy hopes and being illusioned by this fleeting world, that in no time death comes to snatch us while we are unawares...still procrastinating. He provided excellent examples of our predecessors and how they lived their lives with the reality of death in their minds, not wasting a moment in trivialities. He then wrote short expositions on the different stages of death. From the moment that the soul is taken out of the body (the sheer pain in tasting death!), to the questioning in the grave, to ressurection, judgement, the traverse, descriptions of heaven and hell. The death of an unbeliever or one disobedient to the commands of Allah is characterized by torments that know no bound! (I pray to God he protects us from the Evil within our souls and the bad consequences of our deeds!). The bliss and ease of a true believers' journey filled me with hope and yearning, May Allah lead us to an abode of eternal rapture and joyfullness.
One thing he said that really made scared was that heaven and hell were already created, so are the people that will fill both. Each of our paths either leads to heaven or hell, and Allah already knows our final destination. To know which way you are leading, analyze to which path you are inclined on. If the path to righteousness is always filled with obstacles and procrastination then the path to hell has been made easy for you. If not, the opposite is true. It left me with a lot to think about.
Overall I would give this book a 10 out of 10.
I pray we all have a blessed and righteous journey (Amin)

Alaikum Asalaam,
If you liked that book (which I loved as well  :)
Have you read, Disciplining the Soul and Breaking the Two Desires? MashAllah that is a good read as well. It teaches you such simplicity. A friend sent them to me and I will be eternally grateful because they really remind us of what our aim on this dunya is.

No, I haven't unfortunately...Inshaallah, I will put it in my loooooong reading list  ;) I read Mishkatul Anwar and Inner dimensions of Islamic Worship and Mashaallah both of them were really great gems too. May Allah reward him for all his efforts in imparting such sacred knowledge (Amin).  May we all Inshaallah benefit from it too.

Sister Maliha have you read The Soul's Journey After Death by Ibn Al-Qayyim?  I just wanted to know how the two books compare and if Rememberance of Death and Afterlife is much more indepth.   Jazakum Allah Khair.  Just so you know I compared the prices and  http://store.talkislam.com/ is much cheaper.   :-/

Imam Ibn al-Qayyim's book is nice, but I found it a little too technical.  Mostly delving into the *hows* of death and the ruh [spirit].

I haven't read all of Imam Ghazali's book (Death and the Afterlife), but it seems from my cursory readings of it that it focuses more on the *remembrance* of death, and thus is more spiritual in nature.

wAllaahu Ta'aala a'lam.

Wassalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah.
