yeah i always tie my hair in a bun at home and underneath my hijab because that  is the only hairstyle which prevents my hair from sliding down (pony tails don't work). so i wanna know the answer to this question as well...

baraa no one is "disbelieving" you, sis :) ... they just want the exact text of the hadith so they can ask their imam about it.  you may interpret it to be about "putting up your hair in a bun" but others may not, but they need the text   and it's really their right.... if you've never heard of a hadith and someone said i heard "so and so", it's your right and even duty to ask all about it, because 1. you'll be responsible for it 2. you do not want to spread something that could be inauthentic OR even worse, people interpret it wrongly based upon how you related it to them.
so if you don't belive me try this experiement....do it all the time, then see on the day of judgement what the answer to your actions were..
i know you're kind of young, but that is truly a harsh and cruel thing to say, do you really want your sisters to be punished for something? would you want your sister to tell you "go ahead and do a haram and we'll see when you end up in the hellfire etc". that's not what islam is. we do not even want ONE single person to be in the hellfire, not ONE, we wish for everyone to do what's good and what's right and enter jannah. jannah is not exclusive and there is more than enough room for everyone.
do that so if we do it we are TASHBUH BIL KUFAR. we are looking like the disbelievers...
umm we drive cars (copying the kaffirs), we have computers (copying the kaffirs), we have guns to protect ourselves (copying the kaffirs), etc etc... copying the kaffirs is not enough of a legal axiom for us to declare something HARAM.

Is this the hadith you're looking for?

Abu Hurayrah said: The Messenger of Allaah  (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “There are two types of the people of Hell whom I have not seen: a people with whips like the tails of cattle, with which they beat the people, and women who are clothed but naked, walking with an enticing gait and with their heads looking like the humps of camels, leaning to one side. They will not enter Paradise and will not even smell its fragrance, although its fragrance can be detected from such and such a distance.”

(Narrated by Muslim, 2128).

Yes, please Barraa, tell us which scholar has said this.  Personally, I wonder how this can be true, for several reasons, including the fact that the particular hadith quoted above does not seem to mention anything about copying unbelievers.  It mentions the women who "are clothed but naked," and the punishment that awaits them.

The hadith also says that these women walk enticingly "with their heads looking like the humps of camels, leaning to one side." To me this appears to be the type of action that a woman may make when flirting with a man.  Consequently, it doesn't seem to me that this hadith is referring to hairstyle, but to the modesty required of a woman's clothing and her actions.  After all, we can probably agree that it is better for a woman to tie her hair up in a bun so that it fits under her hijab, than to let it flow down her back.

I want to stress that this is my rather uneducated interpretation of the hadith, for I am not a scholar and I do not know for certain in what context the prophet  [saw] made these remarks, although I could venture a guess (my guess would be after the isra', but I'll have to check my copy of ibn Hisham to verify that).  For this and many other reasons any mistakes in this interpretation are entirely my own.

Barraa, if you could please explain in what way you interpret this hadith, or in what way the unnamed scholar you mention interpreted it, it would help us to understand your position.  Please refer directly to the text quoted by NewMoon.

Please forgive me if I've misunderstood anything.

Jazak allah

Assalamu alaikum,
Here's another narration/translation of the hadeeth. It's also from Muslim:Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: Two are the types amongst the denizens of Hell, the one possessing whips like the tail of an ox and they flog people with their help. (The second one) the women who would be naked in spite of their being dressed, who are seduced (to wrong paths) and seduce others with their hair high like humps. These women would not get into Paradise and they would not perceive the odour of Paradise, although its fragrance can be perceived from such and such distance (from great distance).

I would translate the Arabic to:  " their heads are like camels' humps"...

To me this refers to certain hairstyles where the hair is piled on top of the head or made really high (like the style used to be a few years ago, to make a big puff of hair on top of the head).  Anyway, the issue is about women who wear their hair in a certain way to seduce men.  This doesn't seem to have anything to do with wearing your hair in a bun under hijab cause you're wearing hijab!

Assalam Alaikum Waramatullah,

I think we should understand the hadeeth the way the salaf understood it. This way we avoid any misunderstanding of Rasullah(saw).
Having said that, if anyone has Fath Al-Bari of Ibn Hajar Asqalani (rm) let him/her read the sharh(explanation) of the hadeeth and tell us.

Ma Salam

Baraa:

I think I should talk to you. Your not making much sense, and right now everyone is alhamdulillah, tolerating you. Soon no one is going to be this tolerable if you keep this up. As muslims we have the right to now the authenticity of a hadith, and it's tafseer. If you want to keep this scholars name private, them that's okay for personall reasons. I'll talk to you next time we meet inshallah... You know who I am.....

Leslie:
I'm afraid your wrong sister. The hadith refers to the style women do where the hair is held up on the very top of your head and looks like the hump of a camel. These kinds of hair does are haraam to do and wear....I'll try to find the article for you inshallah, explaining it...
are you refusing to believe a witness?
What does this statement mean? Are you the witness? Who is?
i am 100% sure that the inforamation i had given you is authentic and right.
Sis be careful with these kind of statements-  no one is right all the time.
copying the kaffirs is not enough of a legal axiom for us to declare something HARAM.
Are you a scholor- or repeating words you heard?
all the posts i make please make that for girls to see because i wouldn't like to be told on MEN.
Why? Are not many men very knowledgable?
and i'm really absolutely not allowed to tell. even if i was i won't because its too private....and the scholar is well know and is widespread for his knowledge...
If he is a scholor- I would think he would not mind standing by his name when he makes a statement and be held accountable for it.
well could you muslim brothers and sisters please answer my question?
I thought your scholor did answer it.

i have no training to interpret this, nor have i asked anyone of knowledge, but
i see nothing
in it that has to do with anything a woman or girl chooses to do with her hair at home in
private.
it has to do with causing oneself, or one's hair, to be noticed when out in public.  the
question of
hairstyle under hijab would then only be the same:  does it draw anyone's attention?

Under this apportionment women were given the role of making their own homes the
centers of their attention rather than going about exhibiting their physical charms
and worldly possessions.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said that the following type of women constitute one
of the categories of the dwellers of Hell:

"Those women who seem naked even when dressed and those who walk
flirtingly and THOSE WHO PLAIT THEIR HEADS LIKE THE HUMPS OF CAMELS, THUS
INVITING PEOPLE'S ATTENTION, will not
enter Paradise nor will they smell its fragrance even though its fragrance
can be smelt from a very long distance." (Muslim).

Islam, however, does not prohibit beautification (zinat) on the part of women as long
as it is not done in a way that injuriously interferes with the limbs or the body. In
ancient times there were
many kinds of defacement practiced on the bodies of men and animals, partly on
account of superstition or pagan custom and partly on account of the craze for fashion
and display. Examples of this
were tattooing, sharpening or spacing the teeth, shaving or plucking the hair,
wearing hair pieces, etc. Many of these practices still survive and are, in fact,
getting more and more refined.

Since all these practices change or seriously interfere with the natural creation of
Allah, the Prophet (peace be upon him) cursed those who indulged in them for the
purpose of mere
beautification. One report says,

"The Messenger of Allah cursed women who tattooed, and those who got
themselves tattooed, those who engaged in sharpening the teeth (as a mark of beauty)
and those who had their
             teeth sharpened." (Bukhari and Muslim)

The Messenger of Allah cursed women who had spaces made between their teeth in
order to increase their beauty, thus changing the creation of Allah. A third report
says,

"The Messenger of Allah cursed the women who plucked hair and those who
were employed to pluck the eyebrows." (Abu Dawud)

This method of beautification would include the modern practice of shaving the
eyebrows and then painting on new ones, or shaving certain hair and leaving the
eyebrows to look like two inverted
crescents.

However, if a woman has some obtrusive hairs on her face which are a problem and
embarrassment for her, she may remove them. When 'A'ishah was approached by the
young wife of Abu Is'haq
who wished to remove her facial hairs in order to look beautiful for her husband, she
advised her to do so. (Reported by atTabarani) On this basis some Hanafi jurists are
of the opinion that there
is no harm in removing the hairs from a woman's face and applying cosmetics if it is
done with the permission of the husband, in order to please him and with a good
intention. But Imam alNawawi
opposes even removing the hairs on a woman's face because he considers the practice
similar to plucking hair.

A fourth report says:

''A'ishah reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) cursed
women who wore hair pieces and the women who aided in this practice." (Bukhari)

This method of beautification would include the modern practice of wearing wigs. It
consists of using a plait of one woman's hair or artificial hair and joining it to
another woman's hair with the
object of making the woman's hair appear very long and beautiful. Mu'awiyah, while
holding a plait of such hair in his hands during his address to the Muslims, castigated
the 'ulama:

"Where are your learned men gone? (meaning why did they not stop women
from using such hair) I heard the Messenger of Allah stop them from using this." He
also said,
"Undoubtedly the Israelites destroyed themselves when their women adopted
such things." (Bukhari)
