Dear brothers and sisters,

Assalamu Alaikum

This is an update of Gujarat riots. By the Grace of Allah United Economic Forum has started to despatch relief material to Gujarat, the first truck carrying medicines, clothes, bed sheets, plastic carpets and foot wear worth about Rs.20,00,000/-($ 40,000) has left for Ahmedabad and Baroda. Mr. Ghiasuddin Babukhan along with other volunteers and office staff of United Economic Forum have already reached Ahmedabad. Relief operations have already begun in various relief camps.

Mr. Ghiasuddin Babukhan who arrived in Ahmedabad yesterday has been touring various relief camps in Ahmedabad and his reports are heart rendering. Brief excerpts of his fax messages to our office of what he has witnessed:

" Shah Alam Camp: Houses 10500, persons (1920 families) include 112 widows (before riots), 13 after riots - total widows 125, 25 orphaned children and 39 pregnant women-15 of them delivered in the camp, most of the people have come here from surrounding villages. There are several families with 4 to 8 persons who were butchered and burnt alive, several persons I have met have had their loved ones killed and thrown in wells, in some cases scores of people were collected and thrown in wells and then they were set on fire inside these wells where they could not escape. Some case histories: 1) Najma, (alive) two children, son 7 years, daughters 6 years burnt infront of her eyes, she has suffered serious burns trying to save the children. She was able to save only the third daughter age 9 years. 2) Fatima Bibi her family owned a small hotel and saved Rs.3,00,000/- , her house was burnt down, all her savings were looted, 3! of her children were burnt alive in her presence. 3) Qudrat Bibi: 8 out of 11 children were butchered and burnt in her presence, the rest of the three are in the hospital. 4) Shah Jehan Begum: 6 of her children were butchered and burnt infront of her.

Several girls in this camp itself have been mass raped. "

Please note that the violence in Ahmedabad,Baroda, Anand and Kardi are still continuing without any let up. We have started relief operations but the magnitude of this tragedy which continues is absolutely unbelievable. We have now started to receive first hand eyewitness accounts of the situation there and the requirements of the relief camps. The next convoy of relief trucks would be leaving on 2nd March 2002, along with some more staff and volunteers of United Economic Forum, we propose to continue to send one truck of relief material every day so that a continuous supply ! of requirements is provided.

I appeal to all of you to come forward and help us in these efforts of relief and rehabilitation. The magnitude of aid needed seems to be unbelievable and we cannot make a difference if all of us do not come together to share this responsibility. Kindly send your donations generously as we are running short of funds for this huge effort which we plan to make. United Economic Forum is authorised to collect funds abroad by Government of India and even personal cheques from any where in the world can be sent to the address on our letter head.

Jazak Allah,

Mohammed Naveed Siddiqui

Dear brothers & sisters,

Assalamu Alaikum

What has taken place in Gujarat in the past few weeks has left all of us in a shock. Hundreds of muslim men, women and children have been burnt alive by marauding mobs who carried out these heinous acts with meticulous planning. The official death toll stands at 700 but could be much higher. The loss of property and businesses which were completely raised to ground has not yet been estimated. As I had mentioned in my earlier note, this is a very trying period for muslims all over India and unless we come together in every manner, it would be imp! ossible to face the challenges we confront.

United Economic Forum proposes to start relief and rehabilitation programme in Gujarat, Insha Allah. A survey team will shortly leave for the riot affected areas in order to assess the situation first hand and prioritize the operations. We propose to provide immediate relief in the form of medical supplies and food grains to lakhs of people now living in various refugee camps. After continuous deliberations with our contacts in Gujarat it has been concluded that rehabilitation work is most required in three m! ajor areas, i.e., providing new clothes, building homes and re-starting of businesses. The average cost for each of these is envisaged to be:

a) Providing a pair of new clothes : Rs.250/- (about $ 5 ) each

b) Helping to build a new home : Rs. 20,000/ (about $ 400) each

c) Re-starting a lost business : Rs. 25,000/- (about $ 500) each

These are envisaged fields of operations and estimated costs which may increase as we start to execute the rehabilitation and relief work. To start with, United Economic Forum has allocated a budget of Rs.1 crore ($ 2,00,000) for the project.

It is the responsibility of each one of us to lend a helping hand and I earnestly appeal to you to donate generously towards this cause. The loss, damage and scars of this carnage are going to remain with the victims for a long time to come, we can only provide a very small amount of succor and show that we care. Please convey this message to all your friends, relatives and well-wishers so that they too can participate.

All donations can be sent to our offices directly (including personal cheques). We shall keep you posted with all developments with regards to the rehabilitation project.

Jazak Allah

Yours sincerely,

Ghiasuddin Babukhan
