cows eating meat halal?

Asalaamu alaikum,

does anyone know of a hadith that says eating meat of an animal which
has eaten meat is haram?  i'm not talking about animals with fangs, but
cows and chicken that are fed left over animal parts.  Is there a
hadith about that?  I always thought you couldn't eat them, but then someone
said how can you make those animals haram when allah has made them
halal.  so i'm just wondering what the proof is if there is any.

jazakuallah khair

This is from the web site of the Fiqh Council of North America:

In the Name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Conclusion of Meeting Livestock Feeding

The Fiqh Council of North America recently received a report about animal feed. More specifically the use of animal protein and other impurities in the feed given to livestock and chicken. The report raises serious questions about the permissibility of consuming the meats of such animals as well as other health hazards.

The FCNA held a meeting on May 31, 2001 to discuss the above report and its implications. Following are the conclusions of this meeting:

Available information on this issue, especially subsequent to the "Mad Cow" controversy is sufficient to classify the meat of such animals as doubtful. Such doubt exceeds all other doubts such as those relating to the mode of slaughtering of animals or the invocation of the name of Allah at the time of slaughtering.

There is sufficient indication from information available so far that the animal feed commonly used contains animal protein that harms both animals and humans who consume their meat.

Should the above-mentioned information be further verified, it may make the meat of livestock and chicken subject to prohibition from the shari'ah standpoijt.

The FCNA plans to do further research on this subject, consult with more experts in related fields and coordinate with the European Council of Fatwa and Research and other concerned parties.

In the meantime, the FCNA feels that it is advisable to take the following precautions:
" Abstaining or reducing temporarily the intake of meats especially "hot dogs" and hamburgers.
" Attempting, seriously, to buy meats of animals that are fed a totally vegetarian diet, without the use of any animal protein, hormones, antibiotics or preservatives.

The FCNA will, insha'Allah, come up with a statement on this issue as soon as research work and consultations are completed.

Just to add to the above, Anonymous, in reference to your original question, the hadith and topic which you might be thinking about is called jallalah.  This is from Fiqh-us-Sunnah which may be what you are asking about:

Jallalah refers to an animal that eats the waste or flesh of other animals, such as camels, cows, sheep, chickens, geese, and so on. Ibn 'Abbas reported that the Messenger of Allah forbade the drinking of such animals' milk.

This hadith is related by "the five," except for Ibn Majah. At-Tirmizhi grades it as sahih. In one narration it states, "It is also prohibited to ride upon a jallalah. (Related by Abu Dawud.) 'Amr ibn Shu'aib related on the authority of his father, from his grandfather, that the Messenger of Allah prohibited the meat of domestic donkeys. As for the jallalah, he prohibited riding or eating them." (Related by Ahamad, an-Nasa'i and Abu Dawud.) If the jallalah animal is kept away from the other animals for some time and is given clean food to eat, then it becomes pure and is no longer called jallalah. If this is the case, it becomes permissible to eat, as the reason for its prohibition was the change it underwent due to eating filth, a state which would no longer be present.

Just a side point but in light of the recent discoveries of prion diseases like "Mad Cow Disease" and their modes of transmission, it is amazing if one reflects on the fact that Rasulallah[saw] forbade not only the eating of jallalah but even the riding of it 1400 years ago!

So as Abu Hamza's post mentions, what the FCNA is doing now is investigating whether or not the current livestock feeding practices will define the meats in question by Shariah as jallalah or not, and this has yet to be completely decided.

And Allah knows best...
