A Beautiful Mind--take your kleenex with you!

I just had to write a post about this wonderful movie.
Anybody seen it yet?  Russell Crow was very convincing in his role as a gent
struggling with mental illness.  I sort of felt that his portrayal
carried near the entire weight of the movie.  Well, and nearly everyone in
America knows at least one person struggling with mental illness--it's
very common these days...so I really urge everyone to go see it if you
haven't already.  It's very realistic, I thought, and a story
compassionately told.  It's a story about a man named John Nash, winner of the
Nobel Peace Prize in 1994, for his work with pattern vectors in his
study of ergonometrics.  So not only is it a compelling drama, it's also a
true story.  It's also a very clean movie--for those of you who are
concerned about that--theres no swearing, sex, or violence--just a
wholesome story of triumph over incredible odds. I could go on and on.  For
those of you who asked about--who is it--Amanda Frazer--the mentally ill
woman who killed her kids--go see this movie, you will understand the
illness so much better.  I wish there was some way to Thank Russell Crow
and John Nash for what they have succeeded in doing in this sensitive
portrayal of this difficult illness.  Has anyone else seen it?  I give
this movie :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*......:) Patti

I say its best to stay away from such movies.

Stick to good old fantasy such as Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones, the Mummy etc etc.

I couldn't agree more--esp. The mummy.  Any movie starring Brad Pitt is naturally a logical choice ;)  his movies are so nice and, um, thought provoking :)

And Harrison Ford in The Temple of Doom-- :-X  Logical  ???

It meant a lot to me to see this movie--a Beautiful mind.  I think it's long overdue--an explanation or dramatic treatment of this topic.  It really made my heart glad.  It really get's the message--"you are not alone" out to a group of people who need to hear it, Alhumdulliluh!

You know, there was quite a long period in my life when I thought that all muslim's felt alike on most issues--I thought that very probably they would all come to similar conclusions about the different issues that confront us all in the modern world--I expected a sort of sameness among all muslims and so that is what I percieved.  For example:  I once heard an individual muslim woman remark that wearing perfume is a sign of a tainted lady.  Now, having had the chance to read in the akwaht Cafe the many different perfumes that muslim women do enjoy, I have a chance to forget this misperception that I had that this one viewpoint represented all of the attitudes of all muslim women. So Islam does not seem as restrictive and unforgiving as one could mistakenly assume. Scented soaps, television, movies, styles of hijab, the colorfulness of clothing or drabness if that is what one would rather have, --all kinds of things--I am just realizing that there are just so many interpretations of what is acceptable and different people feel different ways about things.  That's a real revelation for me; and it makes the faith, and even the people so much more acsessable.  It sort of opens the doors of Islam to see the diversity of opinions expressed on this board.  I'm also really glad to see some non-muslims participating--like I do; they think of questions I just can't think of, but after I've read them, I think, well, I was wondering.  It's neat!

Well, you see that kind of diversity among Christians--you know, some people believe that the faith forbids drinking alcohol, other's drink and they don't see the religion as being in conflict with that practice.  May be that's a faulty example.  But the issue of movies is like that to, even in Christianity--you know, lot's of Christians oppose movies. It's nice to see that the same kind of diversity exists among the muslims--some think it's ok, some think its not--overall, this is the best news I ever had!

Cheers (a shout out!) for all of you.  Thanks!   []

It makes this :-)  very  8)

Patti it's nice to hear that you're getting a lot of perspectives on Islam :)  The way I usually try to present it is that there ARE those things in Islam that cannot be changed ie like alcohol and pork is forbidden, one must pray 5 times a day--these are things that the consensus of all Muslim scholars agree on, these are the things that keep one in the faith or not... , and then there are those grey areas where even scholars disagree, and beyond that everything is allowed.  :-*

I think Patti's post should be copied and put as an example in the Constitution...  8)

What I learnt from A Beautiful Mind

Bismillah
Assalamu'alaikum :-)

Last 2 weeks, I watched A Beautiful Mind on DVD, and mashaAllah... it is one of the most beautiful movies that I've ever watched.. mashaALlah.

The story was played very well, and they made it such a way that even I was unsure whether he REALLY did have schizo or whether it was a govt conspiracy. And I was only sure,  during the part when ... well, I wouldn't wanna reveal too much of the show ;) But I'd recommend it.

The part where I find it's pretty violent was when he was undergoing the insulin treatment, which, lo and behold, banned now for any mental illness treatment.

And as for sex scenes, well, there's none except for a  kissing part, but by the time we scrambled, searched and found the remote (which is never there when we wanna find it!), it's over. So that's how "short" it is. But then again, I may be watching a censored version. Allahua'lam.

OK, back to the story.

I'd just like to share what I learnt from the movie, inshaAllah.

When I read what was written at the cover of the DVD, I thought, OK, inshaAllah, I think I'll learn about being grateful to Allah and how, with a flick of the finger, so many things can change, and how everything that we have, our sight, our bodies, and even our minds do not belong to us, rather it has been graciously loaned to us by Allah.

But what I saw and learned is far more than that, mashaAllah. And I'd just like to share, a small part of it.

The part that touched me the most, was when Dr John Nash found out that what he has believed all these while to be true is false. What he thought to be reality is just a fallicious delusion. What he thought and believed is "haq" is actually "baatil"

And he asked his wife, how then would he know what is the truth and reality? [sub]Please bear in mind that he is a Professor, a genius in mathematics who is into logic and rational thinking, who concludes everything with the mind. ANd depends EVERYTHINg with the mind[/sub]

And then, she placed her hand on his heart, and puts his hand on her heart. And she said (smt like),"Here. This is where you will know what is real"

And from there, he started his journey to recovery. From his heart, he began to gain strength shut away and ignore the delusions and voices, the strength to continue believing in the REAL reality.. of what his heart knows to be true. The strength to excel, in the reality of his heart.

And all these while, his delusions are still there, but he managed to control them.

For us.. what is the truth in our hearts?what is it that truly matter? What is the real reality that our heart tells, and not the tricks of the mind? Do we get dreamy with the playings of the mind and voices that we fail to see the reality?

A brother once told me that when we are on the path of mujahadah (striving), it is like running  a marathon. There would be voices that we hear - some jeering, and some cheering. And sometimes, we get tired, and be distracted from the path. For it is a long one, and the end point is too far to be seen. And that is when ,we have to filter the voices and have selective listening. To know which are the voices that will spur us on and which are the voices that will make us go futur and falter from the path.

And one of the voices that is hard to detect to be false and destructive.. is the whispers of shaitan... who is elusive, and withdraws quietly when he is whispering. But the way to detect it is when our hearts is purified and the heart is ikhlas (sincere).

I'm not sure whether the effect of watching this movie would be the same to you.

But for the recent past few years , gaining strength spiritually is a big battle for me... it still is to me. And I fear that one day, when I become spiritually, weak, I would take in the voices that tells me to stray away from the path. And take that as my "reality". Just be like everyone else. And just give up the things that I am doing becoz it is just too hard. There's just too many sacrifices to make. And too much energy, it takes.

But when I watched Dr John Nash... I reflected back on what is it that really matters, and what is it that I believe is true. And what is it that is planted in my heart.. and that is Al Haq- Allah... reality. And inshaALlah, the drive for me to keep on this path.

Schizophrenia is his battle. And I have my battle too.

Maybe, others who have watched it can share what they learned too.

Allahua'lam :-)

(Thanx for reading till this far. Shukran)
