Texas?

While I'm still waiting to hear from the job in Alabama, I had been thinking about other places in the country and the cost of living in those places.  There are a lot of jobs in the bay area, but its extremely expensive to live there.

Another possibility that crossed my mind was Texas because I did see a few positions there but I wasn't paying much attention to them.  But I had heard that the weather is really bad out there, its really humid and is really hot.

So could someone tell me what Texas is like?  How does Houston, Austin, Dallas, all compare?  How's the weather?  I heard from this one guy that Texas has desi stores the size of Wal Mart.

Another thing I have realized is that I will have to change the way I talk.  I thought people used to joke around with me saying I sound like a surfer dude, until this recruiter called me on Monday and told me I sound like I have been living in California for a long time.  ;)

Texas is, of course, BIG!!!

It's a state which is cheap to live in.  The people are not very nice, but I personally have never experienced any prejudice from them for being a minority member.  Others tell me theat they have.

Houston is huge!  A lot of Muslims.  Too many, probably.  Insha Allah ZIL can tell you more about Houston because he has family there.

Austin is a beautiful city.  Definitely the most beautiful big town in Texas.  It has a relatively small Muslim community.  4 masaajid, one of which is mainly a student mosque.

Dallas is probably the best place to live if you're looking for a big, active, thriving Muslim community!  Richardson has an amazing mosque, and some amazing Islamic workers also subhan Allah.  The town is big, but not as large as Houston.  The traffic is also a lot better than Houston.

*Hot* in summers (mostly 80's and 90's, occasionally hitting triple digits!).

*Cold* in winters (mostly in 50s and 40s, occasionally going into the low 30's and even high 20's!).  Although it doesn't snow in most parts of Texas, there is occasional sleet that forms when rain freezes right after hitting the ground.

And yes, it rains a *lot* in this state.  And temperature changes are also very abrupt.

Only in Houston.  And he's probably talking about warehouses and wholesale stores :)

If you don't know anything else, just know that the proper response for "howdy" is ... "howdy" :)

If you decide to come to Texas, let me know insha Allah :)
