AMJ Welcomes President’s call on Israel to withdraw from the Occupied Territories

(Washington, DC, 4/4/2002) – American Muslims for Jerusalem (AMJ) welcomed President Bush’s statement this morning and his intention to send Secretary of State Colin Powell to the region.  The President made clear once again that the root cause of the conflict is Israel’s illegal occupation of Palestinian territories.  As the President stated, resolution of this conflict will only come when Israel implements United Nations resolutions 242 and 338 by withdrawing from all the territories it occupied in 1967.  The President also called on Israel to stop all settlement activity in line with the recommendations of the Mitchell Committee and international law.

In a statement, AMJ Executive Director Khalid Turaani said:

“We are encouraged that President Bush has broken his silence in the face of Israel’s unprecedented assault this past week.  We welcome his call on Israel to halt its incursions into West Bank cities and to implement UN Security Council resolution 1402.  However, Israel must not interpret this as a green light to continue its assaults until Secretary Powell arrives next week.  A humanitarian crisis is underway in Palestine and the population cannot sustain more attacks of this nature.  Israel must cease its deliberate attacks on civilians, including medical personnel and journalists.  It must allow civilians to leave their homes to seek medical care, buy food and water, and bury their dead.  It must stop using Palestinian civilians as human shields.  It must stop cutting off water and electricity to entire cities.  These steps must be taken immediately.

“President Bush has shown today and in his previous statements that he recognizes the way out of the conflict.  As the President outlined, first and foremost, the occupation must end.  Daily humiliation of the Palestinian people must end.  Settlement activity must end.  Incursions into Palestinian cities must end.  Yet, time and time again, Israel has shown its unwillingness to take these necessary steps for peace and has drawn only muted criticism from American officials.

“We hope the President’s speech this morning signals a strategic shift in US engagement with this crisis.  Statements are not enough.  The US, as Israel’s main economic patron and supplier of the military arsenal used against Palestinian civilians, must begin to use its leverage to force Israel to take the steps necessary for peace.  We look forward to seeing the steps President Bush will take to implement the vision that he has laid out so clearly this morning and on several previous occasions.”

HUH?  i thought these were the very ideas that are already causing terrible
problems....

in nytimes opinion article by former minister in ehud barak govt.....

This would be the shape of a viable peace platform: land for peace; TERRITORIAL
SWAPS TO ACCOMMODATE COMPACT ISRAELI SETTLEMENT BLOCKS AND THE
RESETTLEMENT OF PALESTINIAN REFUGEES; a practical solution to the refugee
problem that — as both the Clinton parameters and the Saudi proposal indicate —
does not assume the right of return, but requires the CREATION OF AN
INTERNATIONAL FUND FOR THE RESETTLEMENT AND COMPENSATION OF
REFUGEES; two capitals in Jerusalem, divided along ethnic lines; a
nonmilitarized Palestinian state; the end of conflict and finality of claims.

how about an international fund to resettle the israel squatters and compensate
the palestinians for the settlements having been constructed?  i suggest the
israeli squatters be moved straight to the US, but be sure to bring their armed
guards with them and initiate some of their militarily protected overnight
settlement building routines on crop lands and vacant lots and people's backyards
in and around american homes, farms, and neighborhoods.  and don't forget all the
razor wire and sharpshooters to take care of objections...  in fact, there's a really
big ranch down in texas that has lots of unused space - they could start there.
the white house has some big lawns, too, that no one's living on.
