Assalaam alaikum

Wanting to know is there a greater sin in islam?  For example is fornication considered a major sin than smoking cigaretts?  Will Allah forgive us for smoking but will not forgive us for committing fornication? ???

Cheryl,
Yes, there are greater and lesser sins in Islam, but Allah forgives them all as long as the person who committed them repents sincerely.   There are some things for which there is actually something one can do to erase them (like fasting a certain number of days or giving in charity in addition to repenting) and for others for which they are erased by repentance.
The only sin that isn't forgiven is worshipping someone other than God.

I read something that really affected me one time.  I'll try to remember as best I can:  There is an angel on our right shoulder that writes down our good deeds.  As soon as we do a good deed he hurries to write it down, multiplying it by however much Allah multiplies it.  The angel on our left shoulder who writes down our bad deeds waits a while before writing them down.  He gives the person a chance to repent from them.  If the person doesn't repent right away, the bad deed is written down, but later on if he repents and Allah forgives him He orders the angel to erase that deed :)    I just think that's so generous of Allah!  :)
The other wonderful thing about good deeds is that even if you have the intention of doing something good and you were prevented it's still written down as a good deed :)  And if we intend to do something bad and change our minds for the sake of Allah it's written down as a good deed too! Amazing how much you can get out of just those two things :)
