Asalaamu Alaikum ;-) So how did you think it went? There seems to be some confusion over the actual numbers there. Police reports say around 15,000 whilst others say as high as 60,000. Either way it was nice to see so many Muslims together and united. I was very impressed with the turnout from our Sisters as well. Good show all round. InshaAllah the oppression of our Palestinian Brothers & Sisters will soon come to an end. |

[slm] The turnout was really impressive but what touched me the most were those from outside London. I brushed shoulders with tons of brummies and northeners for whom it must have taken hours to get down. In the end the whole purpose of highlighting the issue was succesful. It made both the local and national news though less coverage was given in the national news due to the emphasis on Powell's visit. Did anyone notice that big banner saying "You'll never walk alone" :-* Must have been some Liverpool fans, not me though ;) Whens the next one? :) [quote author=eleanor link=board=british;num=1018300662;start=0#8 date=04/11/02 at 15:01:12] [slm] I'm hoping to see some of you guys on TV, so if a camera comes in front of you hold up a big banner saying "HI ELLIE!!!!"[/quote] Well Eleanor, if you saw someone with sunglasses and a can of Bebsi holding up a sign saying "HI SMELLY ELLIE!!", that was me :P ;D |

[slm] PRESS RELEASE FROM FRIENDS OF AL AQSA In the name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Most Kind PRESS RELEASE 14th April 2002. Massive Rally in Support of Palestinians One of the biggest demonstrations to be held in London for years took place yesterday (Saturday) in support of the Palestinians and their struggle against the illegal Israeli military occupation of their land. Nearly 100,000 people attended the march from Hyde Park and the subsequent rally in Trafalgar Square, and heard from a number of speakers, including Tony Benn, George Galloway, MP, Jeremy Corbyn, MP, Muhammad Sarwar, MP, Azzam Tamimi and Ismail Patel. According to the veteran politician Tony Benn, this was “the biggest” demonstration that he had ever seen in the historic square. Although the organisers of the event the Muslim Association of Britain, Friends of Al-Aqsa and others were overwhelmed by the number of people taking part, they expressed their gratitude for the generally good-natured atmosphere, despite it being a very emotional topic. This view was agreed with by a spokesman for the Metropolitan Police who praised the marchers and the organisers’ own security arrangements. For Friends of Al-Aqsa Chairman Ismail Patel, the programme was the culmination of many weeks’ preparation. “This was originally planned for last September, but for obvious reasons we felt that it was best to postpone it at that time,” he said. “Recent Israeli atrocities in the Occupied Territories, however, made it necessary for the public to have an opportunity to demonstrate their support for Palestinian civilians facing the might of the erroneously-named Israeli ‘Defence’ Force.” Despite the size of the demonstration yesterday, and the subject involved, coverage in the British media has been minimal and inaccurate. Seasoned activists for the Palestinian cause have again expressed their concern that the Zionist influence in the media is still able to ensure that the British public, through a supposedly free press, are fed a distorted view of arguably the most serious conflict thraatening world peace today. Friends of Al Aqsa is a voluntary organisation concerned with the defence of Al Aqsa Haram Sharif and the protection of Palestinian Human Rights. www.aqsa.org.uk PRESS RELEASE FROM MAB Muslim Association Of Britain (MAB) Press Release MAB Demonstration in solidarity with the Palestinian people draws nearly 100,000 Close to 100,000 demonstrators from all corners of the British Isles brought Central London to a standstill on Saturday afternoon, as they marched from Hyde Park’s Speakers’ Corner to Trafalgar Square. The Muslim Association of Britain had called for the British public to show their solidarity with the Palestinian people facing Israeli aggression of epic proportions, and to demand that the British government assumes a firm and clear stance against Ariel Sharon’s administration, and the Israeli Forces. The Demonstrators, many of whom could not approach the overflowing Trafalgar Square nor even the surrounding perimeters, listened to several speakers, amongst whom were the Rt. Hon. Tony Benn, Rt. Hon. George Galloway MP, Rt. Hon. Mohammed Sarwar MP, and Rt. Hon. Jeremy Corbyn MP, who all denounced the Israeli governments’ actions which were described as nothing short of crimes against humanity, and called upon the government to take steps towards severing trade links and suspending weapons sales to Israel. George Galloway announced to the demonstration during his speech, that a message had come through from 10 Downing Street, that weapon sales to Israel had indeed been suspended, amid overwhelming applause and cheers in addition to calls for more of similar actions. Other speakers included Lindsey German of Stop the War Coalition, Carol Regan of the Palestine Solidarity Committee, Michelle Abdul Maseeh QC of the Palestinian Community in the UK, Shaykh Ali Al-Alimi of Al-Koui Foundation, Masoud Chowdry of the Islamic Human Rights Committee, Sayyed Mohammed Al-Musawi of Ahl-ul-Bayt Islamic World League, Kamal El-Helbawi, ex-President of the Muslim Association of Britain, Ismail Patel of Friends of Al-Aqsa, Iqbal Sacarani, the Muslim Council of Britain, Azzam Tamimi of the Muslim Association of Britain and Shaykh Rachid Ghannouci, who concluded with a prayer in which the entire demonstration joined. The demonstration’s demands of the British Government were made: 1) To work ceaselessly to stop the war crimes of the Zionist state of Israel against the unarmed and defenceless Palestinian people, and to consider the illegal occupation of settlements as crimes against humanity. 2) The British government has a moral and legal obligation towards Palestine, as it was the major contributing element which facilitated the occupation of its lands by the Zionists. 3) To bring Ariel Sharon before the War Crimes Tribunal. 4) To impose arms and trade sanctions against Israel. Among the major highlights of the event was that it was completely trouble-free, and a leading member of the London Metropolitan Police later suggested to MAB that the behaviour and procession of the demonstrators ‘had been exemplary’. [slm], I think it was pretty kewl, met up with my Bro Khalid , was hpoing to see others but alas some other time. My 5 mins of fame... Towards the end this dude approached me with a camera and asked me... Questioner, Why you here.... Bro Hanif, Me after a long pause stated least I could do.. for my bro's and sis in Palestine. Questioner, What do you think will be the outcome of this march, any benefits. BroHanif, I think so, first part I said was the education of the people, mentioning the attrociaties of Israel, standing up for whats right and making a postive impact, and from there move onto other areas like working together, sanctions etc etc Questioner, What is the message for the leaders of the Arab states, do you think they are listening ??? BroHanif, well I know they are, after a brief spell of absence they are finally getting together, talking and moving forward. I mean they stood up and condemed Americas action on attacking Iraq so things are changing. You know this march is standing up for everyone, we want everyone to live together in peace, the jews, the xtians and the muslims. The problem is that when sombody oppresses another persons right then that is not justified. For example, 14 Palestinian people living together in an appartment block that is just not fair. This is what we stand up for and this is what Islam is about, Islam is about respecting everyones rights, Islam is about Peace. Questioner, Subhanallah!. end of interview. All in all a very good day. The following article appeared in the London Evening standard :- A demo we can't afford to ignore by A.N. Wilson. Click here for previous columns by A N Wilson On Saturday, I stood in Piccadilly, and watched a march that filled the width of the street and stretched all the way from Hyde Park Corner to the Haymarket. It was a huge, peaceful demonstration by British Muslims against the behaviour of the Israeli government. It was followed by a rally in Trafalgar Square. Had these Britons been running a fun marathon or demonstrating about the rights or wrongs of killing foxes, their march would have occupied hours of TV news and many column inches of the newspapers the next day. As it was, the demo was given about 20 seconds on the TV news on Saturday night. I have scoured the Sunday papers for a single mention of the event. Not a word is said about the fact that tens of thousands of Britons marched through London to protest about the unlawful killing not of foxes, but of hundreds of Palestinians; they were protesting against the wreckage of property, the terrorising of the old, of women and children, the poisoning of water supplies, the destruction of the Palestinian police, administrators, infrastructure. Yesterday's Mail on Sunday reports by Bob Graham confirmed the assertions made in speeches in Trafalgar Square that we are talking here of massacre, and a cover-up, of genocide. Many young Muslims in Palestine are the children of Anglican Christians, educated at St George's Jerusalem, who felt that their parents' mild faith was not enough to fight the oppressor. For that reason, it was a pity that the demo yesterday was entirely Muslim, apart from a few Socialist Workers. Am I very naive to have wished that some Jews could have joined us in the demo, just as horrified as any gentiles by the sheer folly of Ariel Sharon's terror-policy? As an unbelieving Anglican, I wanted the presence on the podium of an Archbishop to protest against the disgusting behaviour of the Israeli government to my old church - including the wilful burning of several church buildings and tha harassment of our cathedral in Jerusalem - and its staff when they try to visit their people in the camps in Gaza. Some Orthodox and Catholic bishops should have been there in Trafalgar Square, too. Last week, we saw the Israeli troops destroy monuments in Nablus of ancient importance: the scene where Jesus spoke to a Samaritan woman at the well, and where the Israelis not long ago killed the Greek Orthodox priest, is now rubble. It is the equivalent of the Taliban destroying Buddhist sculpture but our papers don't seem interested. Only the other day, Israeli troops started firing into the very church of the Nativity in Bethlehem. Even Mandela was a terrorist The spurious justifications for Israeli action by some newspapers is quite stomach-turning. There is said to be a war against terrorism. If "we" don't win the war, then there will be explosions on the streets of European cities. But, hang on. What do "we" mean by terrorism? And why do terrorists do what they do? When Nelson Mandela was arrested all those years ago, he was loading a truck with boxes labelled "Oranges", which, in fact, contained high explosives. In numerous incidents before this, the ANC had let off bombs that killed civilians. Yet we all, rightly, regard Mandela as one of the few world leaders of true moral greatness. The state of Israel itself, whatever you think of it now, began with terrorist assassinations of British Army officers. Terrorism is the war that poor people fight against rich people because they see no other way. The more I think about the world, the less sure I am that I am an anti-terrorist. Is it always "right" to support powerful people against weak people, rich people against poor people? This article deserves lots of praise, email newsdesk@standard.co.uk . Be warned, the Jews have recieved an alert to attack this reporter and also these articles:- |
