The Nawawi Foundation is pleased to announce "Discovering Muslim China," a guided tour of Muslim China with Dr. Umar F. Abd-Allah and Dr. Ingrid Mattson (tentative) from June 28 - July 14, 2002. Seating is limited. Trip Summary The trip will begin Sat, June 28th departing from Chicago O'hare on a direct flight to Beijing, China. The 14 day tour will include 5 city tours (Beijing, Lanzhou, Xian, Guilian, and Shanghai) focussing on Muslim sites and history, three internal flights, a river boat tour, and return to Chicago via Los Angeles from Shanghai. All accomodations and three daily Halal meals will be provided. Total cost per person will be $2,000/person or less, assuming double occupancy in all hotels. Tentative Schedule Beijing - Visit Muslim District in Niujie and 1000 year old Niujie Mosque, which house Chinese Muslim artifacts and porcelain, old and preserved copies of the Quran from all over the world, and the tombs of two sahabah. - Visit a Medical Herbal Centre for a health check-up (included) by experienced Chinese doctors; see a demonstration of "qi-qong" (internal energy) by a doctor. - Visit the famous Great Wall of China, built over 2500 years ago. - Pray in the ChangPing Mosque and visit the Ming Tombs and "Underground Palace." - Visit the 400,000 sq. meter Tienanment Square (largest in the world); explore the Forbidden City and pray at Dongsi Mosque, both built in the 15th century. Dongsi Mosque is the Cultural Center of Muslims in Beijing and houses the Beijing Islamic Association. - Shop at the famous "Silk Street" for bargains on all kinds of branded goods. - Visit Summer Palace, largest and best preserved Imperial Chinese garden. - Pray at the 300 year old Haidian Mosque, visit a Muslim family in a Muslim village and a Muslim school. Lanzhou - Visit Islamic school, where imams and teachers are trained, and village mosques in rural, farming village. - Visit famous town of Lingxia, known as "Mecca of China," where over 90% population is Muslim and many ancient mosques are found. - Visit "monastery-like" mosque where males live a life of devotion and piety; hear Surah Fateha recited the "Qadim" way. - Visit the bustling town center where Muslims sell their wares along the streets and in shops. Xian - Visit the Great Mosque of Xian built in 8th century in the style of the Imperial courts. - See the Xian City Wall and Bell Tower (36 meters tall made of bricks and wood w/no nails) - Visit the "8th Wonder of the World" - the 2000 year old Qin Terra Cotta Warriors, Horses, and Bronze Chariots. And much more in Guilin and Shanghai!
