THEN YOU DIE...
Haroon Moghul

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You wake up in the morning, bang the snooze bar,
You sit up and put your feet in your slippers like you did before,
Your hands grope for your glasses and they reach too far,
They hit your cup of coffee from last night and it falls to the floor.

You brush your teeth but one day you’ll be found alone, not breathing in a dark room.
Pour some Listerine into your mouth and swirl it around,
You look for your clothes, and spray on the most expensive perfume,
As cold water splashes all around, dripping to the ground.

Your feet jump at the fire of icy water on skin,
You fumble around, thinking about the man with the right cologne,
And then you die, before you make it all the way in,
Inside a world that’s made of being all alone, all alone.

You button your shirt, fix your hair and then you get buried,
Running downstairs, the teapot whistles and screams
And the commercials are as shallow as ever, but they still manage to get you worried,
Wondering if your hair’s soft enough to get the man of your dreams.

You step into the garage and turn on the car,
Carbon monoxide spews out but you’re ready to go [pollute] anywhere,
And then you turn the radio on, listening to some pathetic star.
You watch as the cars whiz by, driving to nowhere,

And you flick a cigarette out the window, because you never stopped to care.

Then you get home and make dinner, forget to pray and then you die,
You say love will fix all our problems and the scientists know what’s wrong,
So you plop down on the sofa and grab a beer and watch people on TV cry,
You know something’s very strange but you can’t do more than sing along.

And then you go to sleep at night and dream of the big house on a hill,
You want everything right away, you can’t even wait half a day,
So when things don’t go your way, well then you pop a pill
And then you die, the mourners will not know what to say.

Your blankets are made of the feathers of a murdered bird, long since dead.
You wake up the next day, happy to have two airbags, not just one,
There’s a new supermarket, there are more checkout lanes, instead
Of the four or five they had at the old one, so now you can shop faster fun.

Your new computer reaches the net at blazing speed and hooks up really fast,
You drink and drink and blow away your brain, cell by cell,
Imagining that everything old and true and strong just is not meant to last,
And the new ladder in your garage is better than before, cuz’ with last year’s you fell.

And you live your life, day by day, trudging through the same old waste,
And then you die and then you fall, then you collapse and crumble to dust,
Concerned only with whether or not you can make it without haste,
But hey, life must be better, because these brand new cars don’t even rust!

Another shopping mall where you park your part of the automobile flood,
You said there’s so much to buy, look at and fret over, so much, so far and so near,
But all around the world the sky falls and dies, the world is covered with blood,
And afraid to even care, you sit down in the food court and order a root beer.

Greedy little men and women we are, running to and fro,
In a chase, after a rabbit that went around before, at last he learned to really cry,
These new televisions show more color though
They cost a bit more, so you’ll have to work harder, buy more, and then die.
