Whats the consensus on the best place in the UK for muslims to live.
I've never contemplated anything but London but what about Milton Keynes, Stevenage, Aylesbury etc etc, are there any settled muslim communites in these places and what sort of places are they to live in?

It be interesting to know where you all guys are in Britannia in any case!

A lot of those towns you mentioned only have sizeable muslim communities and in terms of community activities are more than likely to be pretty much quiet.

The major cities Birmingham, Manchester, Nottingham, Leeds all have massive muslim communities. But London wins hands down. *Massive* muslim community - pakistanis, bengalis, arabs, somalis, nigerians etc...you name it! Plently of activity within the community, theres always something going on. And theres plenty of fights with sikhs to keep you on your toes ;D

What I've noticed is whenever people come from outside towns they are completely overwhelmed by London! They cannot come to terms with the multinational aspect of this city and they basically get to see 'all' ways of life that they don't want to leave. For some life is too fast and too much that they want to leave asap. In terms of prettiness, London is an eyesore. Theres no pleasant surroundings as up north, notably Yorkshire.

Personally I like Slough, the area outside west London. Its a breath of fresh air from the city, modern, spacious, down the road from Windsor, easy access back to London and is a hardcore muslim area. I know some cool people there  8)

I have to agree with explorer: London is the best place to be.

There are lots of Muslims, lots of convenience, its a hub of activity, there's plenty to do both Islamic wise and leisure wise.

However, there is hardly any beautiful scenery, and the air don't smell too fresh either - but you get used to that.

People can be a bit cold (unless you know them) but perhaps thats a symptom of the pace of life in all metropolises.

Hounslow is in West London - right near Heathrow airport. There are large Muslim communities in the East of London and the West of London. Myimpression of North London is... its dark - i don't know how else to describe it... it seems very gloomy to me. And South London.. woah.. that looks like a completely different city. As soon as i'm over Tower Bridge it feels really different.

lol

What kind of description is that? May be the local councils need to invest in more street lighting!!

As for the best place to live, it’s a touch hard to compare unless you've lived in other areas and have a good idea what goes on at a day to day level.

At least by living in London, you'll never be far away from Muslims and Islamic activities.

For parents though, finding a good school for your children is a big worry and where you live plays a big part in that.

HA HA Hey Jannah you're right, Hounslow Rocks! 8) You probably know the same people as I do ;D ;D

Check out the mosque. Awesome....

But to be honest, Hounslow is going down the hill as with the rest of London. Crime is soaring and the streets are littered. The only good part left to live seems to be Harrow, north west London.

err... I *think* the whole of Britain puts flouride in their wo'er! U can't be too sure with that Geordi wo'er of yours either, mate! ;)

Haha.. that's me! :-*

London's out for me. Too busy, too noisy, too expensive and way too many people. And way hot hot in Summer (And this is from a person who lives in a densely populated busy HOT city! :-*). I prefer somewhere out North... like the good 'ol Northwest... maybe Manchester  :) Large Muslim community, resource persons, activities, quite centralised and within easier reach to the Midlands, South and up Scotland - cut travel costs and time.

If it's somewhere in the South, then, it gotta be Southampton - calmer and closer to the sea. If it's way up... then, prolly Glasgow or Edinburgh... I love Scotland and highlands :-)

I've been to Hounslow once... but didn't see much of it. Just straight to the mosque. MashaAllah, it's big and cool. I remembered reaching there, all so tired & sleepy, and remained sleepy throughout the course! I've never been so sleepy like that before, I feel as if I've been drugged or smt. Just strange... like I'm not meant to take anything in,  so... I didn't get to see the place much and didn't gain much :(  well, except for a good friendship, with a German sister that I met, mashaALlah :).

errr.. OK... sorry for the ramblings...  :)

Or you could try moving to Bristol.  A lovely city, very pretty and within a stones throw of some of the finest countryside in the country.

The Muslim community is, well, it's there.  Not very big and tends to be grouped around ethnic groups (birds of a feather, and all that).  But we need more practising Muslims around, so c'mon down!!

Oh yeah, it's a bit near Wales too ...

Guys...London is NOT an eyesore, the people ARE NOT mean, and despite the rain... and the cloudy (not gloomy) alhamdulilah CLOUDY weather ... it really is a gorgeous city that I am in LOVE with and intend on returning to some day. I just think its so old, and has so much history that, that alone is beautiful..... there's so much to see, so many ppl to meet.... so much to do and so much to learn from..... (and laugh at..).....

Wallah, London isn't so bad.... I loved it... absolutely adored it, and miss it more then anyone could imagine. :) And the bonus - muslims are everywhere....

Beyond doubt that London is the place to be :), and it has to be NW London with the best tube link (beats the Croydon trams Kashif - ahem ;D).

I'll agree to disagree with Qurat Al Ain and Bintul Khattab. :) LONDON ENGLAND is amazing. Perhaps I'm biased only because my childhood was spent there and I have incredible memories of it....  but each and everytime that I go back, my promise to return insha'Allah, one day, is reaffirmed. :) Its a beautiful city....  and I insist that the people are NOT unfriendly, the weather is a blessing..... You know, I'm really not sure what to base my argument on, yet, there's something about the slender roads, the petite and diminutive cars, the accent… the hustle & bustle of the city.... the subway (and all the weirdness that comes with it).... the mosaic of cultures you see walking down the street..... *sigh*... i'll stop. :)
London is by far incredible .... I rest my case :)

Assalaamu alaikum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuhu

Sister Serenity....
just to add to your list... about 'wonderful' things about london...

the fact that theres very often more than one pub on every street where free mixing occurs, where people get drunk, where people disobey Allaah night after night after night.

The beautiful architecture of the churches on every block where people make the UTMOST shirk of Allaah subhaanahu wa ta3aala, where they attribute to Him a son and partner.

The many shops - London being one of the fashion capitals of the world - which entice and tempt muslim women to dress as tramps and to uncover as much of their body as possible, and the materialistic consumerist ideology it promotes which makes it hard for muslims to abstain from the luxuries and glitters of the dunya.

The many organizations which allow everyone to have their say, - freedom of speech policy - and where many people use this to opportunity to curse Islam and the Prophet Muhammad Peace be upon him - and Allaah.

And most of all, how London is home to the Houses of Parliament, to Buckingham Palace, to 10 Downing Street, to the Houses of Commons - all institutions and places which stand for the arrogant attitude Gross Britannia has assumed with respect to other coutries, to its imperialim and colonialism, and more contemporarily, where our wonderful Prime Minister lives and makes his decisions to bomb afghanistan, to bomb iraq, to support Israel.

....would you like me to continue?

the point is...the west is EVIL, and EVERY city in it as EVIL, and the ideology is promotes is EVIL, and its hidden agenda is EVIL, and there isnt a best place to live in the uk because everything it stands for is AGAINST the muslims, AGAINST Islam, and AGAINST Allaah.

assalaamu alaikum

If the West was all that bad, where did all these reverts pop out from?

Emotional stuff like "everything the West stands for is against Islam" is meaningless because it isn't true. There ARE freedoms that we enjoy in the West that we won't get in other places even in Muslim cities. You may be able to insult the Prophet in this country, but really and truly, how many people do you know who do that? I can't imagine that any proportion of even non-Muslims go out of their way to insult Allah and His Prophet, why should they? They're just normal citizens who are getting on with their lives. Yes, there are always some on the fringe who are looking for trouble, but which society is free from them?

May Allah speed our hijrah to a Muslim land.

errr whoaa  that is quite a statement there... and I think  wrong on alot of counts.. first i have to say living in the west that not everything is evil. furthermore, i think it's a wrong statement because places
are not inherently evil, if there are evil people here, there are evil people everywhere, if there are more evil people here than other places, then maybe there are... but  that doesn't make it inherently evil.

If it is so evil why do we live here? Are all Muslims living in the west evil people then?

broad statements like that just aren't right. there are good people in the west, there are people searching for truth, there are people who have good agendas, there are people who work for justice and charity, there are things that are part of the western culture that are good things like in the US the concepts of equality and justice and freedom of speech are valued.

honestly if we took the average american and told them about what's going on in the muslim world ie palestine and show them the facts etc... they will believe it.. they are all for justice and fairness. if we took the average american and explained to them everything about islam.. the least they would say is ok.. i can respect that even if they don't want to be believers.

and no not everyone is "against islam", just because they are not muslim

honestly i think that statement shows a lack of depth and understanding of islam, the seerah and history, let alone the "west" . it's quite insulting to human beings everywhere..

Assalaamu aalikum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuhu

i dont recall saying that every person in teh west was evil....if you read back i said that everything the west stands for and promotes it evil.  that its hidden agendas and ideologies are evil.

tell me capitalism isnt evil.
tell me consumerism isnt evil.
tell me materialism isnt evil.
tell me atheism isnt evil.

For example, do a little experiment. Stay within your house for about a month.  dont watch tv, dont buy magazines...try and live as close to the sunnah as you can.  establish tahajjud, bring yourself closer to Allaah, learn to have love and hate for the sake of Allaah.  do this for a month.  then go outside onto the streets of the kaafir west, and see how you are affected. just being on the streets.  every church or pub you pass will make you feel sickened and disgusted, every boyfriend and girlfriend who do zina that you see...they may be good people inside, but the whole fabric of society that they have been brought up in, and the hidden layers of the ideology of their socitey which they are not aware of, but which encourage them to act as contrary as is possible to islamic teachings...this is what i am talking about.  i didnt want to cause an argument, we just shouldnt sit back thinking oh im so blessed to be here and its so wonderful living here.  how can it be so wonderful living in a country where the supposed national religion is shirk, where the armies of that country butcher and kill muslims day in day out.  We seek refuge in Allaah from that..ameen.

Again i repeat, i said nothing of particular individuals, i spoke of the society itself and of the hidden agenda which these countries have.

From a personal viewpoint, as a muslim living in the west, I see my duty to live according to Islaam and in this way give dawah and invitation to the non muslims.

Bro, believe me evil is not limited to the west, and nothing is achieved by secluding ourselves as muslims in this society. But to live as active citizens and examples to others, fighting with the sword of the intellect, we will be victorius inshallah in this life and in the hereafter  :-*

thats all

as salaamu alaykum wa rahmatAllah,

If your definition of an evil place is one in which Allah is disobeyed.. where are you gonna go that is not evil?  If a person does the experiment you described, no matter what city they're living in on the planet, they will walk the streets with that sense of ill-feeling in their hearts because people are committing evil the world over.  Man, we have pornography in *Makkah*.  Prostitution, drug trafficking, homosexuality, infidelity, violence against innocents, injustice, etc etc.. these things are not limited to the western world and are alive and well in the 'Muslim world' as we speak.

The opposite of west is not Islam.  The opposite of west is east.  One is not inherently evil and one is not inherently good.

If I may.....
I live in downtown Rabat, the capital of morocco, which is in the "east", and a "muslim" country.
there are bars on almost every street in my neighborhood.
There are around 5 churches (and 1 masjid) and at least 1 synagoguejust in the area.
there are prostitutes right on my street.
a letter box in my building is used as a hiding place for the alcohol that the drunks come and use every day (in broad daylight)
There's a McDonalds 30 seconds from my apartment
I live on the "main boulevard" where everyone and his brother walks with their girlfriends/boyfriends, on evenings and weekends. Iwon't even talk about Ramadan after maghreb.
But there I am, a Muslim in a "Muslim" country, surrounded by "evil".
it's not the place or the laws that make a place evil, it's the people.

yes I know I really do need to move to a nicer neighborhood but this is it for the time being... al hamdu lillah for my appartment which is beautifully renovated on the inside and for the low rent!!
