Protest Rallies and Speak Outs

At my university today, we had a Speak Out about the Palestinian situation in the quad (an open area in the middle of campus).  A lot of people were there, a lot who spoke out (couple Jewish people too), several sisters, several brothers, Christians, Socialists, and one professor.  It was a organized by UIC No-War with co-sponsorship from the MSA.

There were also Hillel students with Israeli flags on the other side of the quad.

Since this was an open event, we really couldn't control what was being said.

One person read a poem by a late Syrian poet about terrorism. It was beautiful, but I'm afraid the passers by didn't really understand it.  There was a phrase "I support terrorism," which could totally be taken out of context (in context, it said if terrorism means that I get back my olive fields, my sons and daughters, etc than I support terrorism). I’m going to try to get a hold of it. Meanwhile, if someone has it, please share.

Anyway, there were several people who went up and pointed out the Hillel students and said quite forceful things.

Several others went up and unequivocally supported "terrorism." The word itself wasn't actually defined by anyone.

I think Speak Outs are much more effective than rallies. What do you all think? What's the best way to have them?

I’m asking because I’ve been to protests in the past where people start doing really rowdy things.  Today nothing really happened (except for a bunch of brothers—seemed like a mob from far—went up to the Hillel students all together to talk with them.

I didn’t think anything said was way out of line. Except being a leader in the MSA makes me worried about our future. Will MSAs be allowed express themselves with being labeled ‘terrorist’?
