Subject: CAIR Media Action Alert Network Date: Thu, 11 Apr 2002 19:33:09 +0000 Salaams, (My apologies if you have already received this) In the past few months, many of us have felt frustration with what we perceive to be inaccurate and imbalanced media coverage iof Islam and issues important to Muslims. Occasionally, we will write to a newspaper when there is especially heinous article or editorial but this media watch effort is rarely focused or consistent. Well, here is an opportunity to take the media to task in a targeted and strategic manner. Just join the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) nation-wide campaign grassroots that is dedicated to voicing the opinions of Muslims of national and local media outlets. Here's how it works: 1) Subscribe to CAIR's media action Alerts list serve by sending a message to: cairaction-subscribe@yahoogroups.com *THIS IS DIFFERENT FROM CAIR'S DAILY "BIG-LIST" E-MAILS AND WRITERS' SYNDICATE 2) When you come across media coverage (be it local or national) that you want others to respond to, send an e-mail with the related web link or description of the coverage to: Arsalan Iftikhar Executive Director, St. Louis Chapter Midwest Communications Director Council on American-Islamic Relations aiftikhar@alum.wustl.edu 3) The administrator of the group reads all the messages sent to him and issues an action alert e-mail to the entire list serve providing the relevant contact information and asking members to promptly contact the newspaper, magazine, tv station, radio show etc to voice our support or disagreement with that coverage. Even if you do not send anything to him, as a member of the list serve, you will still receive the action alerts 4) Daily, Arslan sends out a few actions alerts, e.g "Write NY Times to Show Disapproval over Tom Friedman's April 5 column" or "Thank USA Today for article on Israeli Vigilantism". If everyone just sets aside 5 minutes and responds to at least one of them a few times a week, then we can overwhelm the media with a powerful and unified response. 5) This group has already been very effective in informing media outlets that Muslims are monitoring their content and will act quickly to voice our opinions (whether it be positive or negative). *Just in the last week 4/4-4/11, this email group has had several letters published in major newspapers including the NY Times, Chicago Tribune, Houston Chronicle. Not to mention the accomplishment of flooding editors e-mail boxes which indicates a strong Muslim presence and hence, makes the idea of presenting Muslim the perspective much more palatable. ***Bottom line, sign up for the action alerts to help Muslims and sympathetic Non-Muslims maintain a targeted and consistent voice in the news media: cairaction-subscribe@yahoogroups.com EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT INTERESTED PLEASE FORWARD THIS MESSAGE ON TO OTHERS WHO MIGHT BE INSHA'ALLAH |
