This is a spin off from a discussion in the Akwat folder....

What is your opinion of the Prince- good and bad?

Yeah... which Prince are you talking about?

By the way, has anyone read "The Prince" by Machiavelli? Is it worth getting? Actually, it is worth getting cos its only £2.99 - but is it a good book to read?

[slm] *im plastering my face to the floor as i write this cuz i've officially snuck into the akhwan corner...* BUT....just a quick reply to the post on mackavelli... My friend has read it and has really enjoyed it, despite her bizaare literatqre taste.... but at any rate, for that price, I'd definitely give it a shot. In the end, I think its definitely worth it since you can't lose anything.... I think from ANY piece of literature (good or "bad")... you can undoubtedly gain something beneficial and valueable.....  so GO NUTS... and hey, send us a review when ur done ;)

or for discussion purposes- any Prince from a fairy tale story....

The prince from the Cinderella story?  I think he's a self-centered, superficial macho male who is not satisfied even by the most beautiful women of his entire kingdom!

Sheeeesh!

I mean, had it not been for the fairy-transformed-Cinderella, he probably wouldn't have liked *any* girl at that ball!

And the whole "love at first sight" that takes place at the ball ... I do *not* buy that nonsense.  I don't believe in love at first sight.  In fact, I think that phrase is an oxymoron!  For in order to love someone, you must know them very well.

Anyone wanna convince me otherwise? :)

"pure rubbish"-----  NOT!!! My mother saw my dad in CA. where they were both stationed after the war- 1948-  she told her best girlfriend that she was going to marry him- and 13 weeks later it came to be! They were still married when she died in 1997- after he took care of her in various stages of CHF for almost 17 years.
Ain't love GRAND? Even at first sight!

I knew within 2 weeks that my husband was The One. He used to annoy me like crazy, teasing me, until one day I flipped out and got really angry with him. Then he totally left me alone and never came near me for a couple of days and you know what? I MISSED the teasing, so I went to him and apologised and the rest as they say "is history".
HE claims for him it was love at first sight  :D Which is why he never left me alone. Funny way to show love, throwing ice cubes at someone....  ::)

Oh and the Prince?? Wonderful! A man who sticks to his convictions, travels the land to find the one woman who turned his head... sigh.....

Hmm..maybe he was looking for more than mere beauty..that doesn't sound like superficial to me..or am i missing something???

And about the fairy-transformed-cinderella, she could hardly go to the ball with her rags, could she? they probably wouldn't let her in!

This is a bit off topic, but what do you guys think of the whole soulmate concept? is there such a thing?

If I remember rightly, as the story goes, a pumpkin changes into a horse drawn carriage!

Now tell me what kind of message are we sending to our children here? ;-)

I mean I've known a few pumpkins in my time (and eaten a few to boot) but never have I seen one of those puppies turn in to a carriage for me when I needed it!!!! ;-)

But seriously, I'd agree with Br Abu Hamza on the love at first sight point.

But doesn’t that apply to any sci-fi movie or story? After all it’s all about fantasy. I did read about Cinderella as a kid and I don’t remember ever thinking that there are fairy godmathers or pumpkins that turn into carriages in reality.

I don’t know but to me the objection to Cinderella type stories comes not from the fantasy part but from the love-at-first sight issue. I agree with both of you there. I don’t believe in it either. I can understand physical attraction, not love! But then again what is love? I don’t know if it even exists!

[slm],

Al-Mughira ibn Shu'bah said, I asked for a woman in marriage and Allah's Messenger (peace be on him) asked me whether I had looked at her. When I replied that I had not, he said 'Then look at her, for it may produce love between you.' I went to her parents and informed them of the Prophet's advice. They seemed to disapprove of the idea. Their daughter heard the conversation from her room and said, 'If the Prophet (peace be on him) has told you to look at me, then look.' I looked at her, and subsequently I married her. (Reported by Ahmad, Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah, Ibn Hibban, and Darimi.)

--------
So looking at a woman whom someone is going to marry, might produce love between the two. This is as close as it can get to love at first sight realistically speaking.

Sister eleanor, think of it this way perhaps, that your husband did like you *a lot* when he first saw you, so much so that if he couldn't have married you , he might have felt a bit sad. But suppose he didn't have the opportunity to meet you the second time, he probably would have gotten over you soon enough. But I don't think it will be the same situation now, would it? The love as has been put by Allah (swt) between you would surely have grown far more than what was at first sight.

30:21 And among His Signs is this, that He created for you mates from among yourselves, that ye may dwell in tranquillity with them, and He has put love and mercy between your (hearts): verily in that are Signs for those who reflect.

Jazak Allahu Kheir for that last post - perfectly proven....

In terms of love at first sight: its Naseeb.... Allah (swt) has a plan and a story for each and every one of us... whether a couple happens to see eachother and chemistry strikes... or they initially dislike one another and then happen to fall in love... either way, there is something beyond the scope of our comprehension out there..that is pulling strings and making thincs work..... (Allah swt).... so love at first sight...  to some, it has definitely existed..... to others, because of its lack of existance in their lives, that doesn't necessarily mean it altogether isn't there.... :) everyone has their own tale.....subhanna'allah.

In terms of soulmates: undoubtedly.... after the above, 'nuff said. :)

I think a lot depends on definitions.

Attraction at first sight? Definitely

Love at first sight? Hmm…

Love after marriage? Definitely

As for the pumpkins, pay no heed. I just have my own issues with them ;)

Hmmm

discussion on "love" in the ikhwan folder.....who woulda thought ;)

well i have to say that i do think there is something that goes on at first sight...sometimes it can be instant attraction...sometimes even an instant "knowing" this person is right for you... but love..... ?

isn't love when you care deeply for a person.. when you are hurt when they are hurt, when you feel pain when they do, when their happiness is your happiness?  when you share all experiences, joy and sadness and humor and life, when you accept the other person despite knowing all their faults, but love them knowing their uniqueness?

so can all that be felt upon first sight? or does love come in shades....starts out light at first sight and then just deepens and deepens over a lifetime?

Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah,

I agree that it would be very difficult to call what happens at first sight "love".  I think that whatever it is that comes before marriage is more "desire" than love.  I don't mean physical desire, but rather the desire to be with that person... the desire to have what you don't have...  the desire to experience what other people have described to you as love.
It's after marriage that Allah puts between you love and mercy.  I used to think I was in love with my husband before I married him.  As soon as I did marry him I realized that I had never known what love really was, and that I had fallen in love with him after I married him.  I really think it's like a gift that Allah gives people who get married.
Wallahu a'lam! :)

i think theres lust at first sight but never love

love only occurs after you know someone and if you find the person attractive as well as interesting your very lucky.

the people who confuse lust with love (mostly women, occasionally men(!)) end up as a domestic violence statistic.

The story of Cain is a classic example.
