| [slm] i saw monsoon wedding the other day...gosh, what a disappointment :( i was expecting something cultural (well duh) but not to the extent where they misrepresent islamic values...in the movie, one of the bride's cousins is kinda portrayed in an islamic light...her name is aisha, her dad says things like "Allah hafiz" and goes crazy with urdu shaiyri filled with religious symbolism...and yet hes drinking throughout the film, and the cousin does this belly dance thing with random guys.... i dunno if they ARE supposed to be muslim or not, but it seems almost like theyre trying to ridicule muslims...kind of like with american desi, when the muslim student (i think his name was saleem?) was considering dating, but only a muslim girl..like that justifies it. anyways, i was just disheartened by it all...anyone thinkin about going to see it, dont =P |

| [slm] Unfortueantly, the movie as you describe it seems to be realistic. Especially we find that at weddings, muslims - even practicing ones - just forget about any and all Islamic rules, and do what they want i.e. the mixing, the music, the dancing, etc. Sad but true. |
