Prayer In Public

[slm],
This is just a quick question really.  :) I went out today with my family and my in-laws, and the time for Zuhr prayer came.  At which point all the brothers got together to read in public, so I asked if I should read seated in the car so a) I wouldn't miss the prayer time,  :-) and b) would avoid drawing undue attention to myself, as it would just look like a woman sitting in a car!!   ;D But was told women should not pray at all in any public place, so I would have to miss my prayer and read it later, which I did.    :(  I just wondered what everyone thinks about this, as it is an issue which I know applies to many sisters, as I have seen sisters pray in public places at Airports and shopping centres  before.
Just wondered what the opinion is, any evidences.........

[color=Teal] [slm] Sis,

Well I think that we need to ask ourselves what is more important: praying on time in public or missing the prayer time? ??? Since I'm not a scholar I could be mistaken, but as far as I know praying on time is the number one priority.  When I have to then I pray in public. This includes in my car, outside, in the library, in school etc.   ;)

Just one question: why weren't the brothers at Jummah prayer?  ???

Who said women can't pray in public? what's their evidence? Salat is a very important thing and as far as i know you should pray wherever you are so as not to miss it.

Where i work there aren't offices or cubicles. It's a lab with people having their desks and test machines around them. So i really don't have anywhere that is hidden so i pray in my own little area. At first i used to sneak out and try to find a conference room that is not used but i got tired after a while for two reasons. First, conference rooms are used all the time so it's very hard to find one that is empty. And secondly, why should i be hiding away like i'd done something wrong? People don't know anything about islam..many people used to think that i was indian (i.e hindu) when i  first came here. The salat is what makes them realize you're a muslim or at the very least it arouses their interest to ask you about it.

As long as you are islamicly dressed,which one needs to be for prayer anyway, it shouldn't matter where you pray. In fact, your prayer might be a form of da'wah. You never know who's going to be affected by it. Read Kathy's story at Al-Manar in relation to this :)

wassalam

the Quran enjoins us to pray the prayers at their appointed times.  if anyone wants to limit that by conditions ie Muslim women don't have to when they are in public places, it is THEY who must bring the proof, not the other way around.

Jazakallah Everyone for your replies!!   ;)  I always tend to think other people always know best when confronted with differing opinions.  I guess I should ask for evidences, and pray in public until I have seen them. :)
Oh, and be more assertive and confident myself!!
Well, you learn new things everyday, so Inshallah,  I'll learn much more.......... :-) :-) :-) :-)
