calorie counting - how to do it with daal n salans

this may seem like a random question, but im going on a new diet where im trying to track my calorie intake. this helps me realize how much i am really eating and is getting me out of my denial stage ("but i only had a few of those hersheys kisses, mom..i seriously dont remember eating more than 5....or 11....or 48")

anyways, the question is: how do you count calories when it comes to desi food, like chicken tikkahs, daal, palak gosht, aloo gosht, nihari, biryani, bun kabab, boti kabab, chicken salan, aloo gobi, mirchoun ka salan, bhagar-e baingan...(am i making you hungry? cuz im making myself famished! :D ) i mean, the calorie counting thing works for me during the week, when im at college and eating salads and cereal and mac&cheese...but even those masala packets dont have the nutritional values on them...

now what is a girl to do?? (plz dont suggest stay this weight...as i said, im out of the denial-despite-the-tightness-of-my-jeans-without-a-belt-before-dinner stage)

assalaamu alaikum

I asked this question before and no one had any answers. But a safe estimate i think is to double whatever you imagine the calorie count to any dish is. Man, desis just put in TOO much ghee into everything!

[slm] sister,
R u sure that masala mixes have calories in them??If I were u,I would follow the packets for how much oil or vegetables or meat u use. I mean this might work, waht do u think?? :) Because basically calories for anything depends on how much ingredients u use. Also, this web site called www.recipezaar.com has a lot of curry recipes and their calorie count. THis one recipe I looked at had like 700 something calories.  :o Scary, huh??
Well, good luck with ur diet and take care of urself sista. :-)

Nope, it isn't the oil that fills you up - its the gosht. Man, my uncles say that if they haven't had any gosht in their meal, they haven't eaten! hehe.

The other day i was in the kitchen watching my mum cook, and she poured a whole load of oil into the haandi, and i'm like: "MUM!" and she's "what? its just like water"

Assalamu alaikum
If you can't estimate how many calories are in the food, you can try to think about each ingredient separately (chicken, flour, oil etc) and estimate that.  There's a great website for counting calories: go to www.bored.com (yes I tried it out once to see if there was a bored.com...  :P) and scroll down till you find the Nutrition Calculator.
Warning: You may be shocked by just how many calories you eat a day!

Jokes apart sis these saalans /Taris are more loaded than an occasional hershys bar or an occasional chocalate mousse( Guess  whats for dinner
Uble channe and roti  :) )

diet tips...to lose weight cut out bread..and the priceless advice is stop eating when your hunger is satisfied.

we get fat because we are greedy and need to clean the dish of anything edible.

drink plenty of fluids..water and fill your plate with salads and fruits. and finally excercise a brisk 30 minute walk 3 times a week minimum.

Peace be on those who follow the GUIDANCE

Forget calories and enjoy your food, but:

Leave one third of your stomach for food, another third for drinks and the last third for air.
